AQA GCSE Economics
Many students revising AQA GCSE Economics spend most of their time memorising definitions, then discover in the exam that the real gap between grades comes from understanding how the papers are built. The exam does not ask for long essays. It asks you to apply economic concepts accurately to the case study in front of you. This guide breaks down the structure of both papers, the question types, the mark weighting and the depth expected at each level, so you know exactly where every minute should go.
AQA GCSE Economics consists of two written papers only. There is no coursework, no oral assessment and no practical component. Paper 1, How markets work, focuses on the microeconomic side: the price mechanism, market failure and government intervention. Paper 2, How the economy works, focuses on the macroeconomic side: growth, inflation, unemployment, fiscal and monetary policy, plus international trade and globalisation. Each paper is worth 50 per cent of the final grade, and both papers have the same length and the same total marks. That means your revision time should be split roughly evenly between micro and macro. Abandoning one side costs you about half the available marks.
Both papers open with a section of objective questions. There are relatively few of them and each carries only a small number of marks, but this is the most efficient block of marks on the whole paper. If you know the core definitions and can read a basic diagram, you can secure these marks without spending any writing time. Typical questions ask you to work out the direction in which a demand curve shifts, to distinguish complements from substitutes, to identify a type of price elasticity of demand, to classify a cost as fixed or variable, or to recognise a category of unemployment. Speed is the priority here. Never spend more than a minute on one question, because the case study and evaluation questions later need that time.
3. Section B:
The second section presents a business or policy context, usually with a data table, a diagram or a short description, followed by a series of short questions. The most frequently overlooked marks here are calculation marks: percentage change, unit cost, total revenue, profit, market share and elasticity after a price change all appear regularly. Calculation marks are the easiest to secure, but you must show your working rather than dropping a single final number, because method marks are more reliable than answer marks. Explanation questions expect a structure of concept plus context. Name the economic term first, then apply it to the specific people and specific numbers in the case study. Copying the case study without using terminology scores poorly, and using terminology without touching the case study scores just as poorly.
Section C is where the grade is decided. It usually contains extended evaluation questions of 9 and 15 marks, asking you to analyse the impact of a policy or a business decision and then reach a judgement. The 9-mark question normally needs one developed line of argument plus a conclusion, and half a page to a page is enough. The 15-mark question requires both sides of the argument, followed by a qualified conclusion, for example that a policy works in the short run but its long-run effect depends on elasticity of demand. AQA economics evaluation questions typically allocate marks across knowledge, application and evaluation, with evaluation carrying the largest share. That means a script that lists correct points without weighing them up cannot reach the top band. In each paragraph of an evaluation answer, include one argument, one piece of evidence from the case study, and one qualification beginning with a counterpoint. Examiners recognise this structure immediately as a higher-band answer.
Command words are the most underrated clue in an AQA paper. Identify and State need one precise answer, and extra writing earns nothing while costing time. Calculate requires a number with units and visible working. Explain requires a chain of causation with at least two links. Analyse requires you to connect cause to consequence and to say who is affected and by how much. Discuss and Evaluate require both sides of the argument and an explicit judgement. A very common mistake is to answer an Evaluate question with Analyse-level content: the argument is complete, the conclusion is missing, and the hardest marks to recover are lost. A simple training method is to read past papers and, before writing anything, decide from the command word alone how many paragraphs you need and how the answer must end.
Losing marks rarely means you did not know the economics. It usually means you did not follow the rules of the paper. The first common error is omitting units and direction, for example calculating elasticity correctly but failing to say whether demand is elastic or inelastic. The second is describing the shape of a diagram instead of explaining why a curve shifts. The third is ignoring the data in a case study question even though a table was provided. The fourth is writing an evaluation answer with no conclusion, or with a conclusion that contradicts the argument above it. The fifth is poor time management, spending thirty minutes on Section B and then rushing Section C, which carries the heaviest concentration of marks. In the final week, run a targeted check against these five error types and mark your own scripts honestly. That is far more effective than grinding through ten more papers without feedback.
Weeks one and two should be spent closing gaps in microeconomics, concentrating on supply and demand, elasticity, costs and revenue, and market structure, with a set of objective questions every day to build speed. Weeks three and four move to macroeconomics: turn growth, inflation, unemployment and policy instruments into a single comparison table that lists the advantages, disadvantages and conditions of use for each tool. Week five is for full timed papers under real exam conditions, with particular attention to the two-sided argument and the conclusion in Section C. Week six involves only two activities: reviewing your own mistakes and recalculating the case study calculations from scratch. Throughout, after every evaluation answer, ask three questions. Did I use the numbers from the case study? Did I present the opposing argument? Is my conclusion a qualified judgement rather than a restatement? The answers to those three questions largely determine your final grade.
Start with percentage change. If a price falls from 40 to 36, the change is 4, and dividing by the original price of 40 gives 0.1, which is a fall of 10 per cent. A frequent error is dividing by the new price, and another is stating the direction wrongly. The denominator is always the original value, and a fall must be labelled as negative or as a fall. Next comes unit cost and profit. If total costs are 12000 with an output of 800 units, unit cost is 15. At a selling price of 22, unit profit is 7 and total profit is 5600. Finally, price elasticity of demand. If a 10 per cent price rise reduces quantity demanded by 25 per cent, elasticity is 2.5, demand is elastic, and raising the price will reduce total revenue. These questions carry few marks individually but appear in nearly every paper, and they are the only fully verifiable item types on the whole exam. Practise until they need no conscious thought.
Diagram questions follow a stable three-step method. First establish the initial position: state where the market sits at the original price and quantity, and whether it is in equilibrium, shortage or surplus. Second, explain why a curve shifts, and shift only one curve at a time unless the question clearly gives two separate causes. Third, state the new equilibrium outcome, naming the rise or fall in price and the increase or decrease in quantity, then link that outcome back to the people in the case study, for example higher consumer spending or lower business profit. On timing, the objective section should take no more than a seventh of the available time, short case study answers about half, and the remaining forty per cent should be reserved for evaluation questions. Give each evaluation question at least twelve minutes, with the final two minutes dedicated to writing the conclusion, because the conclusion is often the first thing an examiner confirms. Test this ratio with one fully timed paper before the exam. It improves real scores far more than rereading notes.
