AQA GCSE
In AQA GCSE English Literature (8702), Section B of Paper 1 asks you to write about a 19th-century novel. It is a closed-book exam: you get one short extract and roughly 50 minutes to produce a critical essay that shows knowledge of the extract and of the whole novel. This guide breaks the task into seven key areas, from exam structure and Victorian context to character, theme, method, mark scheme and exam-room technique. Read it once, then use it to build your own revision notes from your set text.
Exam Structure: What Is Actually Being Tested
Section B 一题,满分 30 分,另加 4 分 AO4(拼写、标点、语法与词汇,也就是 SPaG)。 A Christmas Carol、Great Expectations、Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde、Frankenstein、Jane Eyre、Pride and Prejudice、The Sign of Four。
Paper 1 has two sections: Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel. Section B is a single question worth 30 marks, plus 4 marks for AO4 (spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary, known as SPaG). The wording is predictable: you are given an extract and asked to start with it, then explore how the writer presents a character, a theme or an idea. Two details matter. First, the question always demands both the extract and the wider novel, so an extract-only answer is capped in the middle bands. Second, the exam is closed book, which means quotations come from memory and their accuracy directly shapes the quality of your AO1 evidence. Most students study one of seven texts: A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, or The Sign of Four.
Key Point 1: Context and Genre of the 19th-Century Novel
The keywords for 19th-century fiction are change: industrialisation swelled cities and widened the gap between rich and poor, the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act sorted the poor into the deserving and the undeserving, religious doubt spread with scientific advance, and Empire made London the centre of a global system. This background is not decoration; it is analytical equipment. Scrooge embodies the utilitarian economics of 1843. Jekyll and Hyde dramatises the pressure of Victorian respectability in 1886. Jane Eyre's position as a governess places her in the gap between servant and lady. Three genre habits repay attention: serial publication pushed writers to end chapters on a hook, first-person retrospective and epistolary narration create an illusion of authenticity, and Gothic devices such as darkness, old houses and doubles externalise inner conflict.
Key Point 2: The Extract-to-Whole Answer Route
Strong answers follow a clear route. Read the question and fix on the focus word: what exactly are you asked to explore, such as how loneliness is presented. Spend about five minutes on the extract, annotating three short quotations, and for each ask what method is used, what effect it creates, and how it connects to the whole novel. Write three or four paragraphs that begin in the extract and then widen out, often ending a paragraph with a sentence that pushes the reading beyond the extract. Close with a paragraph built on a second moment from the wider novel, so the essay becomes a loop rather than a list. Never start by retelling the plot before turning to the extract: examiners have very little patience for narration.
Key Point 3: Characterisation and the Arc of Change
AQA likes character questions because character carries theme and structure at once. Do not stop at a label such as greedy or kind; write about how the writer makes the reader see that quality. Three handles help. First, the entrance: writers place a figure through appearance, action, speech or the judgement of others, and that placement prepares the possibility of change. Second, idiolect: a character's vocabulary, sentence length and tone shift with their psychological state, and clipped syntax often signals repression or fear. Third, the arc: 19th-century novels favour redemption or decline, so state where the character moves from, what triggers the shift, and whether the change is complete. That single pattern covers structure and theme. Avoid vague moral verdicts; describe the method that produces the reader's shifting sympathy.
Key Point 4: Themes and Using AO3 Context Properly
AO3 is worth 6 marks and rewards contextual understanding, but it is not marked by counting facts. Examiners look for context used to explain the writer's choices. The reliable shape is context plus method plus effect: the Victorian pressure to appear respectable leads the writer to use a smashed door as a symbol of loss of control, which makes the reader feel dread. The weak shape is a separate paragraph of biography, dates and events disconnected from the text. Learn a short list of recurring themes: class and poverty, redemption and second chances, duality and repression, gender roles and the marriage market, Empire and the other, science against faith, and childhood and education. For each, prepare two usable scenes and one short quotation.
Key Point 5: Language, Form and Structure (AO2)
AO2 carries another 12 marks and the essential move is a complete chain: device, effect, reader response. At the level of language, watch shifts between concrete and abstract, sensory detail, especially recurring cold, dark and damp tones, sustained metaphor and symbol, irony and understatement. At the level of form, consider how first-person limited narration restricts what the reader can know, how letters and diaries create multiple viewpoints, and how chapter titles and narrative frames organise meaning. At the level of structure, look at the arrangement of contrasted scenes, repeated images such as fire, doors, mirrors and fog, and whether the ending stays open. Replace empty comments about interest with concrete claims: this metaphor turns a house into a prison, which shapes the reader's sympathy for the character.
Key Point 6: The Mark Scheme and How to Reach the Top Band
Marks divide into AO1 (12), AO2 (12) and AO3 (6), plus 4 marks of SPaG. AO1 rewards a sustained, informed response with evidence from the whole novel; AO2 rewards analysis of language, form and structure; AO3 rewards relevant context. Levels run from 1 to 6, and the top band is described as critical, exploratory and convincing. In practice, that means offering an interpretation that could be argued against rather than listing observations. Four working rules follow. Keep one clear line of argument and tie every paragraph to the focus word. Anchor each paragraph in a short accurate quotation and analyse the method. Let context serve the text instead of sitting in its own paragraph. Vary sentence structure, use terminology precisely, and keep spelling and punctuation clean to secure the SPaG marks.
Key Point 7: Common Losses and Timing in the Exam Room
此外还有引文不准、只贴引文不分析、用「the writer uses language to make it interesting」这类空话。
Three losses recur in marking. Narrating the plot for two hundred words without analysing method drains AO2. Stacking historical background into a paragraph unconnected to quotations wastes AO3. Writing only about the extract and forgetting the whole novel caps AO1. Weaker answers also misquote, quote without analysis, or rely on phrases such as the writer uses language to make it interesting. For timing, allow five minutes to read the question and plan, five to annotate the extract, thirty-five to write, and five to check. Keep a four or five paragraph shape: two or three paragraphs rooted in the extract, one comparing with a second moment from the wider novel, and a closing sentence that deepens the argument instead of repeating the introduction.
One-Week Revision Plan and Self-Test
With one week left, try this plan. Day one: map three through-lines in the novel (a character's change, a central theme, key scenes) and learn ten short quotations. Day two: write one practice paragraph for each of character, theme, method and context. Day three: complete a full past-paper question under 50-minute conditions. Day four: practise extract annotation only, turning three quotations into complete analytical chains. Day five: revise context cards and rehearse weaving context into textual analysis. Day six: rewrite day three's essay and compare the two versions. Day seven: closed-book recall of quotations and essay plans. The self-test is simple: given any extract, can you name three analysable methods, their effects, and two links to the wider novel within five minutes? If yes, the question is under control.
One last reminder: this question tests the ability to connect a detail in the extract with a pattern across the whole novel, not pure memory. Practise the route above three times and the opening paragraph will no longer be a blank wall. Good luck with the exam.
