The Born-Haber cycle is the part of A-Level Chemistry thermodynamics where marks are lost most easily and, at the same time, where full marks are easiest to secure. Its central idea fits into one sentence. Take the reaction between a metal and a halogen that forms an ionic solid, a process that cannot be measured directly with an ordinary calorimeter, and split it into steps that can either be looked up in data tables or measured experimentally. Then use Hess's law to reconnect those steps back to the starting point. Once you understand that logic, you can not only calculate lattice enthalpy but also explain why theoretical lattice enthalpy often disagrees with the experimental value.
Before constructing any cycle you must be completely clear about the definition, sign and unit of five enthalpy terms, because most lost marks are not arithmetic errors but direction and sign errors. The first term is the standard enthalpy of formation, which is the enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states. For sodium chloride the equation is Na(s) + 1/2 Cl2(g) -> NaCl(s) and the value is -411 kJ mol-1. This can be measured by calorimetry, which makes it the one experimentally anchored number in the whole cycle.
The second group covers atomisation: the enthalpy of sublimation of the metal and the bond dissociation enthalpy of the halogen, both of which are endothermic and therefore positive. The third is the first ionisation energy, which converts a gaseous metal atom into a gaseous 1+ ion and is also positive. The fourth is the first electron affinity, the step that turns a gaseous halogen atom into a gaseous 1- ion; it releases energy and is therefore negative. Be careful here, because the second electron affinity is always endothermic: forcing an electron onto an already negative ion means overcoming electrostatic repulsion. The fifth term is lattice enthalpy of formation, the enthalpy change when one mole of gaseous ions condenses into one mole of ionic solid. By definition it is exothermic and carries a negative sign.
Once the five terms are in place, building the cycle becomes a technical exercise in choosing a different route. The start and end points are fixed: the start is the elements in their standard states and the end is one mole of the ionic solid. Route one is the direct enthalpy of formation in a single step. Route two goes around the houses: sublime the solid metal into gaseous atoms, dissociate the halogen molecules into gaseous atoms, ionise the metal atoms into cations, add electrons to the halogen atoms to form anions, and finally let the two sets of gaseous ions combine into a crystal. The total enthalpy of both routes must be identical, which is Hess's law applied directly.
A very practical directional trick follows from this. Only one quantity is unknown, normally the lattice enthalpy itself. Add the four known terms in the order elements, then gaseous atoms, then gaseous ions, and subtract that sum from the enthalpy of formation. The negative of the result is the lattice enthalpy. In symbols the relationship is: enthalpy of formation = total atomisation + ionisation energy + electron affinity + lattice enthalpy. Get that single line right and the algebra afterwards is almost impossible to get wrong.
Let us run through a full calculation with real data. The enthalpy of formation is -411 kJ mol-1, the enthalpy of sublimation of sodium is +108 kJ mol-1, the bond dissociation enthalpy of chlorine is +122 kJ mol-1, the first ionisation energy of sodium is +496 kJ mol-1, and the first electron affinity of chlorine is -349 kJ mol-1.
Step one is to total the cost of producing gaseous ions: 108 + 122 + 496 - 349 = 377 kJ mol-1. Step two applies Hess's law: lattice enthalpy equals the enthalpy of formation minus the cost of forming the gaseous ions, so -411 - 377 = -788 kJ mol-1. That negative sign matters enormously. It shows that combining gaseous sodium ions with chloride ions releases 788 kJ mol-1, a very large quantity that explains why ionic crystals melt at such high temperatures.
One high frequency trap deserves emphasis. If the question asks for the lattice enthalpy of dissociation rather than formation, the answer becomes +788 kJ mol-1, because it is simply the reverse process. Many students produce the correct magnitude but lose all the method marks by getting the sign the wrong way round. Write the definition sentence before the arithmetic: the quantity being calculated is the enthalpy change when gaseous ions form a crystal, therefore it is negative.
Notice also how the chlorine bond dissociation enthalpy is halved. The bond dissociation enthalpy is quoted per mole of Cl2 molecules, but only half a mole of Cl2 is needed per mole of sodium chloride, so 244 kJ mol-1 becomes 122 kJ mol-1. Applying the full value is one of the most common single errors in this topic.
Magnesium oxide is the favourite advanced example in examinations because it concentrates every multiple and sign trap into a single question. The enthalpy of formation is -602 kJ mol-1, the enthalpy of sublimation of magnesium is +148 kJ mol-1, the first ionisation energy is +738 kJ mol-1, the second ionisation energy is +1451 kJ mol-1, the bond dissociation enthalpy of oxygen is +498 kJ mol-1, the first electron affinity of oxygen is -141 kJ mol-1 and the second electron affinity is +798 kJ mol-1. That final positive value confirms the repulsion argument made earlier.
The total cost of producing gaseous ions is 148 + 738 + 1451 + 498 - 141 + 798 = 3492 kJ mol-1, so the lattice enthalpy of formation is -602 - 3492 = -4094 kJ mol-1. That number is remarkably large, roughly five times the value for sodium chloride. Two factors explain it. First, the charges rise from 1+ and 1- to 2+ and 2-, and the electrostatic attraction scales with the product of the charges, so it quadruples. Second, the ionic radii are smaller, so the separation is shorter and the attraction is stronger still. This is exactly why magnesium oxide melts at 2852 degrees Celsius and finds use as a high temperature refractory material.
Once this calculation becomes routine, you will meet the most interesting question type in the topic: the theoretical lattice enthalpy from the Born-Lande equation or a simple Coulomb calculation does not match the experimental value from the Born-Haber cycle, so explain the difference. There are two cases. In the first, the experimental magnitude is larger than the theoretical magnitude, which means the crystal contains extra attraction, normally arising from the polarising power of the cation. When a cation is highly charged and small while the anion is large and easily distorted, the anion's electron cloud is pulled towards the cation. That introduces a degree of covalent character, so the energy is lower than a purely ionic model predicts, meaning more heat is released.
The second case is when the two values are close, which indicates a compound that behaves almost as an ideal ionic model. Sodium fluoride and sodium chloride are the standard examples. When you answer this question type, your concluding sentence must be a quantitative comparison rather than a vague mention of covalent character. State how much more negative the experimental value is, explain that the difference comes from polarisation induced covalent character, and only then draw the conclusion. Conversely, if the question states that the experimental magnitude is smaller than the theoretical value, the ionic model assumptions, or the ionic radii and charges supplied, do not apply to that compound.
Finally, here is a checklist you can take straight into the examination hall. First, for every Born-Haber question write down the start point and the end point and label the directions before doing any arithmetic. Second, check every multiple: forming one mole of sodium chloride needs only half a mole of chlorine molecules, but forming one mole of magnesium oxide needs one mole of oxygen atoms, so the oxygen bond dissociation enthalpy of 498 is not halved, which is the exact opposite of the sodium chloride case. Third, second ionisation energies and second electron affinities only appear for 2+ or 2- ions, and the second electron affinity is always positive.
Fourth, quote units as kJ mol-1 and keep a sensible number of significant figures. Fifth, in explanation questions use the precise vocabulary of charge density, polarising power and covalent character, and support each claim with a numerical comparison. Sixth, if the question asks for both a diagram and a calculation, draw the cycle first with every enthalpy value labelled, because the diagram itself carries marks and will still earn credit even if the later arithmetic goes wrong. Apply these six rules consistently and the Born-Haber cycle stops being a place where marks disappear and becomes a reliable source of marks instead.
