Many students treat doing more past papers as the only route to higher marks, yet the same mistakes reappear in every mock. An error log is not a neat copy of wrong questions; it is a system that turns mistakes into reusable decision rules. This guide breaks the process into three practical stages: recording, diagnosing and reviewing.

The real bottleneck in exams is rarely the amount of content you know, but the speed of your judgement. In the exam hall you must decide within a minute which formula to use, what to solve for first and which boundary conditions apply. An error log makes that judgement explicit: every wrong question marks one failed decision, and writing it down converts a failure into a rule you can reuse. Two ideas from cognitive science explain why it works. Active recall means closing the answer and redoing the question from memory, which produces far stronger retention than rereading a worked solution. Spaced repetition means revisiting the same idea on day one, day three, day seven and day thirty, which flattens the forgetting curve.

Do not turn your error log into a transcription exercise. The most time-efficient structure is three columns: the question on the left (cut it out, print it or paste a screenshot), the cause of the error in the middle, and the correct solution path with checkpoints on the right. A workable ratio is roughly three to one to six: the space you give to why you went wrong and what to do next should be far larger than the question itself. The question is only a vehicle; the rule you extract is the asset.

The diagnosis column must name a specific action instead of saying careless or not mastered. For instance, "when differentiating I forgot the chain rule for the composite function and treated the inner function as a constant" is a checkable action, whereas "calculation error" prevents nothing in the next exam. If you cannot describe the failure precisely, you have not yet found the real breakpoint, and you should go back to the textbook or your teacher to fill in the missing step.

Losing marks is not one problem but four. Conceptual errors mean you have the definition, condition or range of validity wrong, for example confusing the dot product with the cross product. Procedural errors mean the method is right but you skip steps, misplace signs or drop units. Presentation errors mean the answer points in the right direction but ignores the command word, such as writing a calculation when the question says justify. Strategic errors mean poor time allocation, for instance spending fifteen minutes on a four-mark question and leaving a twelve-mark question blank.

Each category has a different fix. Conceptual errors require going back to the textbook to rebuild the definition and writing a counterexample beside it. Procedural errors require a fixed writing template: formula first, then substitution, then units, then conclusion. Presentation errors require a command-word sheet that spells out the expected structure for describe, explain, justify and evaluate. Strategic errors require timed practice with explicit checkpoints, such as finishing the multiple-choice section by minute forty-five. Once you classify your mistakes you will usually find that one or two categories dominate, and fixing those lifts your mark fastest.

A beautifully organised error log is worth nothing if you never revisit it. A workable rhythm is: record on the day, redo the question closed-book the next day, redo it on day seven, and again on day thirty. Each time, cover the diagnosis and the solution columns and leave only the question visible. Mark a tick if you solve it, a cross if you fail, and write the new cause beside the cross, because a second failure usually means your original diagnosis was too shallow. Mark a question mark if you hesitated, since hesitant questions are more dangerous than wrong ones: they consume time in the exam hall.

Hold one fixed review session each week and keep it under forty minutes. Spend the first twenty minutes redoing the questions you marked with a cross or a question mark. Use the next ten minutes to merge repeated causes into a single high-frequency error list. Use the final ten minutes to copy that list onto a sticky note and put it on your desk or in your pencil case. In the week before an exam, stop doing new papers and do only two things: read the high-frequency list three times, and redo the questions from your last three mocks closed-book.

Maths and physics: errors usually sit in modelling and checking. Number the conditions in the question, write the equation each condition generates beside it, and add the unit check as a final step. Many lost marks come from signs and units, so listing them as separate checkpoints pays off immediately.

Chemistry and biology: the relationships between concepts matter more than single definitions. Draw a small relationship map linking reaction conditions, energy changes and ranges of validity. In biology, write extended answers as independent scoring points, one idea per sentence, so that two marks are not buried in one clause.

Economics and business: most lost marks come from analysis depth and evaluation. Record the diagram, the chain of reasoning and the evaluation paragraph separately, and note the link you dropped, for example ignoring how elasticity changes the pricing decision.

English and humanities: here the log works like a language notebook. Split each error into vocabulary, collocation and structure, and write one original sentence for each. For essay writing, collect your verbose sentences, the grammatically correct ones that waste words, and rewrite them in a tighter form.

The first mistake is recording without reviewing, which turns the log into decoration. The second is copying every wrong question until the book becomes too heavy to open; a better filter keeps only two kinds, questions you repeatedly get wrong and questions you should have solved. The third is highlighting an entire page, which destroys all sense of priority. The fourth is recording only the wrong answer and not the correct path, so the next attempt still lacks a model answer.

A weekly routine can be fixed in four steps. First, collect this week's wrong questions and label them by the four categories. Second, redo closed-book the questions you marked last week with a cross or a question mark. Third, update the high-frequency error list and remove anything you have now solved correctly twice in a row. Fourth, set one concrete checking action for the coming week, such as checking units and signs in the last thirty seconds of every question. After four weeks your diagnosis will speed up noticeably, because the same errors start to repeat, and repeated errors are the easiest ones to eliminate.

Here is a complete entry you can copy as a template. Question: a spring extends by 4.0 cm under a force of 2.0 N, so find its spring constant. The left column holds only the question and the data. The middle column records the cause: "I substituted 4.0 cm directly into the formula without converting to 0.040 m, and I confused F = kx with the expression for work done." The right column records the correct path: state Hooke's law F = kx, convert the extension from centimetres to metres, substitute k = F / x = 2.0 / 0.040 = 50 N/m, and verify that the units reduce to N/m. Finally write one rule at the foot of the entry: whenever a length appears, convert it to SI units before substituting. A month later you only need the question and that rule, not the full solution.

Entries like this take two to three minutes each, far less than copying a whole worked solution. A physics log containing just sixty to eighty entries of this quality will cover the great majority of your lost marks for a full term. Quality beats volume, and nowhere is that truer than in an error log.
