Hello everyone! Germany 1890-1945: Democracy and Dictatorship is a core option in AQA GCSE History Paper 1, examined alongside the wider theme of the modern world. The story runs from the Kaiser's empire, through defeat in the First World War and the crisis-ridden Weimar Republic, to Hitler's dictatorship and the ruin of 1945. In this article we go through the essential knowledge in chronological order, with key dates, causes and consequences in both Chinese and English, so you can build a clear timeline and write confident exam answers.
In 1890 the young and ambitious Kaiser Wilhelm II dismissed Bismarck, Germany's long-serving Chancellor, and launched an era known as Weltpolitik, or world policy. Industrially Germany was booming: by 1900 it produced more steel than Britain, and its chemical, electrical and armaments industries led Europe. Politically, however, the system remained authoritarian. The Kaiser appointed the Chancellor, controlled the army and foreign policy, and the elected Reichstag could only pass laws and approve budgets. Abroad, Wilhelm ordered the construction of a great battle fleet, which triggered a costly naval race with Britain, and his colonial ambitions alarmed France and Russia. At home the working class grew quickly; by 1912 the Social Democratic Party (SPD) was the largest party in the Reichstag, yet it was still shut out of real power. Beneath the surface of wealth and confidence, serious tensions were building.
War broke out in August 1914 and most Germans expected a short, victorious campaign. Instead the country suffered four years of grinding stalemate on the Western Front. The British naval blockade cut off food and raw materials, so by 1917 German cities faced severe shortages, malnutrition and disease. Militarily the war was lost by autumn 1918, and the trigger for collapse came from within: sailors at the port of Kiel mutinied rather than sail on a suicidal final mission, and revolution quickly spread to Berlin and other cities, where workers' and soldiers' councils seized control. On 9 November 1918 the Kaiser abdicated and fled to the Netherlands, and two days later Germany signed the armistice that ended the fighting. The Empire was finished; Friedrich Ebert, leader of the SPD, took charge of a hungry, defeated and divided country, and Germany became a republic.
The Weimar Republic was proclaimed in 1919 and its constitution, drawn up in the small town of Weimar, created Germany's first real democracy. It introduced proportional representation, gave every adult man and woman the vote, and protected basic rights such as free speech and assembly. Crucially, Article 48 allowed the President to rule by emergency decree without the Reichstag, a legal loophole the Nazis later used to destroy democracy from within. Germans hated the Treaty of Versailles, which they called a dictated peace, above all the war-guilt clause in Article 231 and the enormous reparations bill. In 1923 French and Belgian troops occupied the Ruhr after Germany fell behind on payments; the government answered with passive resistance and printed money to pay the striking workers, which wrecked the currency. Hyperinflation followed, and people's lifetime savings became worthless overnight. Recovery came under Gustav Stresemann from 1924: he introduced a new currency, the Rentenmark, and negotiated the Dawes Plan, which brought American loans and revived industry. Germany rejoined the community of nations by joining the League of Nations in 1926, and the arts flourished in the famous Golden Years of Weimar culture. Yet coalition governments were unstable, and the army, judges and old elites never accepted democracy. The republic looked prosperous, but it was far from secure.
Hitler joined a tiny fringe group, the German Workers' Party, in 1919, renamed it the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) and launched its 25-point programme in 1920. He was a remarkable public speaker who channelled German anger against the Treaty of Versailles, blaming Jews and Marxists for the nation's humiliation. In 1923 he attempted to seize power in the Munich Beer Hall Putsch. The coup failed and he was imprisoned, but in prison he wrote Mein Kampf, setting out his racist ideology, and he emerged determined to win power legally through elections. The Great Depression that began in 1929 was the turning point. Unemployment in Germany soared past six million, and faith in the Weimar system collapsed. Nazi seats in the Reichstag rocketed from just 12 in 1928 to 230 in July 1932, making the party the largest in parliament. Goebbels' skilful propaganda, the SA's street violence against opponents, and simple promises of work and bread attracted voters from every class: workers, farmers, the middle class and desperate young people. In 1932 conservative politicians around the ageing President Hindenburg decided they could control Hitler and use him against the left. On 30 January 1933 they made him Chancellor. They soon realised they had opened a door they could never close again.
Hitler had been Chancellor for only a month when the Reichstag building burned down in February 1933. The Nazis blamed the communists, and Hitler persuaded Hindenburg to sign an emergency decree that suspended freedom of speech, press and assembly and allowed arbitrary arrest. In March 1933 the Reichstag passed the Enabling Act, which let Hitler make laws without parliament, and German democracy was effectively finished. The Nazis then imposed Gleichschaltung, meaning coordination or forced conformity: trade unions were abolished, all rival political parties were banned, state governments and the civil service were purged, and the media came under Nazi control. In June 1934 Hitler ordered the Night of the Long Knives, a bloody purge of the SA leadership, including its chief Ernst Röhm, to reassure the army that he was on its side. When Hindenburg died in August 1934, Hitler merged the offices of President and Chancellor, took the title Führer, and made every soldier swear a personal oath of loyalty to him. The dictatorship was now complete.
Nazi Germany was a police state. The SS and the Gestapo secret police watched every corner of society, informers were everywhere, and political opponents were sent to concentration camps. Propaganda under Goebbels controlled newspapers, radio and film, while the education system and the Hitler Youth indoctrinated children from the earliest age. Economically the Nazis cut unemployment dramatically through rearmament, public works and a drive for autarky, or self-sufficiency, and they staged the 1936 Berlin Olympics to display German strength, but all of this was built on lost freedoms and preparation for war. The persecution of Jewish people escalated in stages: the Nuremberg Laws of 1935 took away their citizenship and banned marriage with non-Jews; in November 1938 Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, saw synagogues burned and Jewish shops smashed across Germany; and during the Second World War persecution turned into systematic genocide, the Holocaust, in which around six million Jewish people were murdered. Germans were not all obedient: the White Rose student group distributed anti-Nazi leaflets, youth gangs such as the Edelweiss Pirates defied the regime, and in July 1944 Colonel Stauffenberg planted a bomb in Hitler's headquarters. Every opposition movement was crushed with savage brutality. In September 1939 Germany invaded Poland and started the Second World War; in May 1945 the Red Army captured Berlin, Hitler killed himself in his bunker, and Germany surrendered unconditionally. The tragedy that had been building since 1890 ended in total ruin.
Start by memorising the spine of the timeline: Bismarck falls and Wilhelm takes personal power in 1890; the First World War from 1914 to 1918; revolution and the Kaiser's abdication in 1918; the Weimar constitution and the Treaty of Versailles in 1919; the Ruhr crisis and hyperinflation in 1923; recovery under Stresemann and the Golden Years from 1924 to 1929; the Great Depression in 1929; Hitler becoming Chancellor in January 1933 and the Enabling Act in March 1933; Hitler becoming Führer in 1934; the Nuremberg Laws in 1935; Kristallnacht in 1938; the outbreak of war in 1939; and defeat in 1945. For the exam itself, remember three habits. First, when explaining causes, separate political, economic, social and international factors instead of giving one single reason. Second, for source questions, evaluate who wrote or produced the source, when and why, before judging how useful or reliable its content is. Third, for essay questions, build every paragraph on a clear structure of point, evidence and explanation so the chain of cause and effect is explicit. Finally, keep the deepest lesson of this topic in mind: democracy is fragile and has to be defended by ordinary citizens. That is exactly what AQA wants you to understand.
