Fractions, decimals and percentages are three of the most important topics in KS2 maths, and they appear in almost every SATs paper. Many pupils can handle one form on its own but lose marks when asked to convert between them. This guide explains the conversion rules in the clearest way possible, with worked examples and the trap questions that commonly appear in Year 6 SATs.
These three forms describe the same idea: how much of a whole we have. Half of a pizza can be written as the fraction 1/2, the decimal 0.5, or the percentage 50%. The value is identical; only the notation changes. Once pupils see fractions, decimals and percentages as three languages for one number, conversion stops being memorisation and becomes translation.
为什么叫"百分比"?per cent 来自拉丁语 per centum,意思是"每一百"(out of 100)。
Why is it called a percentage? "Per cent" comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "out of 100". So 50% means 50 out of 100, which simplifies to exactly 1/2. Decimals are built on powers of ten: 0.5 means 5 tenths, or 5/10, which also simplifies to 1/2.
To turn a fraction into a decimal, simply divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Another way to think: three quarters, each worth 0.25, so 3 × 0.25 = 0.75. If the denominator is 10, 100 or 1000, just place the decimal point using place value: 7/10 = 0.7 and 23/100 = 0.23.
What if the division never ends? For 1/3 = 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333..., the digit 3 repeats forever. In SATs, such questions usually say "round to two decimal places", so the answer is 0.33. Teach pupils to follow the rounding instruction exactly rather than writing an endless string of digits.
Here is a useful prediction trick: if a simplified fraction has a denominator whose only prime factors are 2 and 5, its decimal must terminate, because 10 = 2 × 5 and the denominator can be scaled up to 10, 100 or 1000. For 5/8, the denominator 8 = 2 × 2 × 2 is missing two factors of 5, so multiply top and bottom by 125: 5/8 = 625/1000 = 0.625. Likewise 7/8 = 875/1000 = 0.875. If the denominator contains any other prime factor such as 3, 7 or 11, the decimal recurs forever, as with 1/7 = 0.142857... The SATs often test the eighths family (1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8), which are all multiples of 0.125, so they deserve dedicated practice.
Converting a decimal back to a fraction is the reverse process: read the place value of the final digit, write it over 10, 100 or 1000, then simplify. 0.7 has its last digit in the tenths column, so it is 7/10. 0.23 becomes 23/100. 0.125 becomes 125/1000, which simplifies to 1/8. Simplifying is the step pupils skip most often, yet SATs mark schemes require fractions in their simplest form: 75/100 must be cancelled down to 3/4 for full marks.
A useful trick: look for common factors before dividing. Both parts of 25/100 are divisible by 25, giving 1/4 in one step. Learning the most common equivalent fractions by heart makes these conversions much faster in a timed test.
A percentage is just a decimal multiplied by 100. To convert a decimal to a percentage, move the decimal point two places to the right and add the % sign: 0.35 becomes 35%, 0.06 becomes 6%, and 1.4 becomes 140%. To go back, remove the % sign and move the point two places left: 45% becomes 0.45, 8% becomes 0.08, 250% becomes 2.5.
Why two places? The % sign means "out of 100", and each place of the decimal point represents a factor of ten, so two places means multiplying or dividing by 100. The classic error is running out of digits: 0.05 needs a placeholder zero when converted, giving 5%, not 05%. Conversely 5% becomes 0.05, and pupils must remember to write the zero after the point.
The safest way to convert a fraction to a percentage is in two steps: divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal, then multiply by 100 and add the % sign. For 7/20: 7 ÷ 20 = 0.35, and 0.35 = 35%. When the denominator divides exactly into 100, scale it up instead: 3/25 becomes 12/100 because 25 × 4 = 100 and 3 × 4 = 12, so 3/25 = 12%.
Memorise these high-frequency equivalences: 1/2 = 50%, 1/4 = 25%, 3/4 = 75%, 1/5 = 20%, 2/5 = 40%, 3/5 = 60%, 4/5 = 80%, 1/10 = 10%, while 1/3 is about 33.3% and 2/3 about 66.7%. These recur throughout SATs papers, so a short oral-drill session before the exam pays off: pupils should instantly recognise 3/4 as 0.75 and 75%.
Percentage word problems at KS2 come in two main types. The first is finding a percentage of an amount: for 20% of 30, use 10% as a stepping stone (10% of 30 is 3, so 20% is 6), or convert to a decimal and multiply (20% = 0.2, 30 × 0.2 = 6). Both methods earn full marks if the working is shown clearly. The second type is percentage increase or decrease: if an item costing £80 rises by 25%, first find the increase (80 × 0.25 = 20), then add it on (80 + 20 = 100).
The most common mistake is skipping steps. When an amount increases by 25%, the safest SATs strategy is to find 25% of the original first, then add it back; writing the two steps earns method marks even if the final arithmetic slips. A powerful checking habit: an increase must always give a result larger than the original, and a decrease a result smaller. If 10% off 60 produces 66, the pupil can instantly see the error without redoing the whole calculation.
The most common real-world setting in the papers is shopping: a football shirt originally costs £45 and is sold at 20% off. What is the sale price? Twenty percent off means paying 80% of the original, so first find 20% of 45: 10% is 4.5, so 20% is 9, and the sale price is 45 - 9 = 36 pounds. Another frequent question type rewards the "10% plus 5%" split: for 15% of 40, take 10% (4), add 5% (half of 4, which is 2), and combine to get 6. Splitting percentages like this is far less error-prone than jumping straight to multiplying by 0.15.
In recent SATs papers, fractions, decimals and percentages appear in three forms: quick recall questions in Paper 1 such as "write 0.4 as a fraction"; word problems and ordering tasks in Papers 2 and 3 such as "put 0.62, 3/5, 58% and 0.6 in ascending order"; and number-line questions where pupils mark the position of 0.5 or 25%. Ordering questions are the best discriminator, because they test conversion skill and comparison strategy at the same time.
The standard strategy for ordering is to convert everything to decimals first: 58% = 0.58 and 3/5 = 0.6, so the four values become 0.62, 0.6, 0.58 and 0.6. Notice that 3/5 and 0.6 are equal, so both must appear in the answer: 58% < 3/5 = 0.6 < 0.62. For revision, ten minutes of daily mental conversions plus two or three past-paper word problems beat hour-long cramming sessions. Keep an error log and classify each mistake as a conversion slip or a calculation slip; fixing the underlying weakness matters more than doing more questions.
Comparison questions hide classic traps. When comparing 3/5 with 65%, the number 65 looks much larger than 3, but 3/5 = 0.6 = 60%, so 3/5 is actually smaller. For 2/3 versus 7/10, convert to decimals (0.666... and 0.7) and the answer is clear. The universal method is to convert everything to decimals with aligned digits, or to rewrite every fraction with a common denominator and compare numerators. Either method works; switching halfway is where errors creep in.
Percentages can also exceed 100%. The number 1.5 equals 150%, and the mixed number 1 1/2 equals 150% as well; both are larger than one whole. Number-line questions love this idea: marking 1.5 on a line from 0 to 2 is exactly the same task as marking 150%. Pupils who believe percentages must be smaller than 100 become confused by 140% or 250%. Half-grid and tenth-grid questions are equally common: when the line from 0 to 1 is split into ten equal steps, each step is 0.1 or 10%, so 0.3 and 30% occupy the same point, and examiners often mix the two notations in a single question.
To sum up: fractions, decimals and percentages are three notations for the same value. Conversion is just division by the denominator, or multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. Master the equivalence table, write percentage problems in clear steps, and convert everything to decimals before ordering, and this whole SATs strand becomes reliable marks. Once these basics feel automatic, pupils are ready for mixed operations and harder comparisons.
