In AQA GCSE English Language (8700), every reading paper tests the same core skill: language analysis. It is not translation, and it is not retelling the plot. It answers three questions: which words, sentence forms and rhetorical devices has the writer chosen? How do they work? What effect do they create in the reader's mind? Many students can underline a simile and name a metaphor, yet stay stuck in the middle mark bands, because they label the technique and stop. This guide covers four areas: where language questions sit in the papers, the terminology you need, a three-step analysis method, and question-by-question frameworks, with a common-errors checklist at the end.

1 试卷与分值:语言分析题分布在哪里

Paper 1(Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing)共80分、1小时45分钟。

Paper 1, Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing, is worth 80 marks and lasts 1 hour 45 minutes. Section A reading carries 40 marks. Question 2 is the direct language question: it gives a 20th century fiction extract and asks how the writer uses language (8 marks; spend about 10 to 12 minutes). Question 3 tests structure (8 marks), and Question 4 is a 20-mark evaluation question in which you judge a statement and support your view with language evidence. Paper 2, Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives, is also 80 marks over 1 hour 45 minutes. Question 3 on Section A asks for language analysis of a non-fiction text and is worth 12 marks, the heaviest language question in the whole exam; Question 4 (16 marks) asks you to compare ideas and viewpoints across two texts, and a strong comparison still depends on precise language analysis. Section B on each paper is 40 marks of writing, where your control of language effects earns the top band. Knowing the marks and the time budget for every question is the first step to consistent performance.

Build your terminology in three layers. Layer one is word classes: nouns and noun phrases, verbs (dynamic verbs for action, stative verbs for states), adjectives and adverbs. Do not just name them; notice how they work together, such as three adjectives stacked before one noun to intensify an atmosphere. Layer two is figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, sibilance, hyperbole, listing and the rule of three, juxtaposition, oxymoron, rhetorical questions and imperatives. Layer three is sentence forms: simple, compound and complex sentences, plus minor sentences and one-word fragments. Short sentences tighten rhythm and create tension; long sentences unfold detail and fluency. One more high-value pattern: a semantic field. When several words repeatedly point to the same image domain, such as light and dark or sea and voyage, the writer is usually signalling a theme.

3 三步分析法:What-How-Why

拿到任何语言分析题,都按三步走。第一步What:锁定一处语言选择,可以是一个词、一个短语、一种修辞或一种句式。第二步How:说明它是如何构建的,词义、声音、位置或搭配上有何特点。第三步Why:解释作者意图与读者效果,这是得分大头。看一个练习例句:The old house loomed above us, its dark windows like empty eyes, watching in silence(那座老宅在我们头顶赫然耸立,黑洞洞的窗户像空洞的眼睛,沉默地注视着)。示范分析:作者用暗喻把窗户比作empty eyes,将房子写成一个有生命的沉默观察者;loom一词自带压迫与威胁的重量,watching in silence进一步渲染不祥的寂静;读者因此感到不安,并预感危险将至,作者借此在情节展开前埋下悬疑。完整答句要把术语、引文、效果与意图熔成一句,而不是把标签一个个罗列出来。

Use the same three steps for every language answer. Step one, What: select one language choice, a single word, a phrase, a device or a sentence form. Step two, How: explain how it is built, what is distinctive about its meaning, sound, position or collocation. Step three, Why: explain the writer's intention and the reader's response, and this is where most of the marks live. Take a practice sentence: The old house loomed above us, its dark windows like empty eyes, watching in silence. A model response might run: the writer uses a metaphor to compare the windows to empty eyes, personifying the house as a silent living watcher; the verb loomed carries weight and threat, while watching in silence deepens an eerie stillness; this unsettles the reader and foreshadows the danger that follows, so the writer builds suspense before the next event. Notice how the model answer melts technique, quotation, effect and intention into one sentence instead of listing labels.

On Paper 1, Question 2 tests language while Question 3 tests structure, yet many students discuss vocabulary in the structure answer or retell the plot order in the language answer, losing marks on both. The boundary is clear. Language analysis looks inside sentences: individual word choices, figurative devices, sentence forms and sound effects, so the answer must zoom into specific wording. Structure analysis looks across the whole extract: how the opening connects to the ending, when the viewpoint shifts, how scenes move forward, whether there is flashback or foreshadowing, how pace rises and falls, and where the turning point lands. Try a self-test: if deleting a few words would destroy your analysis, it is a language point; if you need to step back and view whole paragraphs or the full extract before you can explain it, it is a structure point. On Paper 2, Question 3 is worth more marks but still targets language within a passage, so do not drift into structure or into a summary of attitudes.

5 分题型框架:8分、12分、16分怎么写

Paper 1第2题(8分):写两到三个自然段,每段走一遍Point-Evidence-Analysis循环,全题控制在12分钟内。开头句直接给判断,例如:The writer uses the simile of empty eyes to present the house as threatening。 Both writers convey fear, yet X does so through violent verbs while Y relies on understatement。无论哪种题型,铁律不变:观点、引文、手法、效果、意图,五要素在每个展开段里缺一不可。

For Paper 1 Question 2 (8 marks), write two or three paragraphs, each built on a point-evidence-analysis cycle, and finish within 12 minutes. Open with a judgement, for example: the writer uses the simile of empty eyes to present the house as threatening. Embed short quotations; brief and precise beats long and vague. For Paper 2 Question 3 (12 marks), write three paragraphs covering different levels of language, one on devices, one on word meanings, one on sentence forms, and tie every paragraph back to the writer's purpose in non-fiction: shaping a persona, building emotion, or steering the reader's view. For Paper 1 Question 4 (20 marks), state your position first, then argue across about four paragraphs, weighing agreement and partial agreement, judging whether the effects succeed, citing evidence for your judgement, and finishing with an overall verdict. For Paper 2 Question 4 (16 marks), compare viewpoints and methods across the two texts; organise by similarities then differences or the reverse, but every point must shuttle between both writers, for example: both writers convey fear, yet X does so through violent verbs while Y relies on understatement. Whatever the question, the rule never changes: point, quotation, method, effect and intention, all five elements in every developed paragraph.

6 效果动词与连接语:让分析句更像考官答案

同一个意思,用词不同分数不同。与其反复写this shows,不如储备一批效果动词:convey传达、suggest暗示、imply隐含、evoke唤起、emphasise强调、foreground突显、juxtapose并置、reinforce强化、undermine削弱、contrast对比。分析时挑最准的一个,例如:The adjective lonely foregrounds the character's isolation rather than merely describing it。句与句之间用连接语把逻辑串起来:this suggests that、as a result、in contrast、similarly、moreover、on the other hand,避免每句都以The writer开头。写读者反应时,把the reader换得更具体:the reader is made to feel、we share the character's unease、the reader's sympathy grows。这些动词与连接语本身不占多少记忆量,却能立刻让答案的语域贴近评分标准里的分析性语言,是性价比最高的提分动作之一。

The same idea earns more marks when it is worded like a marker's answer. Instead of repeating this shows, build a store of precise effect verbs: convey, suggest, imply, evoke, emphasise, foreground, juxtapose, reinforce, undermine and contrast. Pick the most accurate one for each point, for example: the adjective lonely foregrounds the character's isolation rather than merely describing it. Use linking phrases to chain your logic: this suggests that, as a result, in contrast, similarly, moreover, on the other hand, so that not every sentence starts with the writer. When you describe the reader's response, make it concrete: the reader is made to feel, we share the character's unease, the reader's sympathy grows. These verbs and linkers take almost no effort to memorise, yet they instantly lift the register of your answer towards the analytical language of the mark scheme, which makes them the cheapest marks available in the exam.

7 高频失分点与自查清单

失分点集中在六个习惯上。第一,报菜名式分析:只写uses a simile,不解释效果,分数上不了中高档次。第二,大段抄原文:引文超过一行半,挤占了分析空间,应该只摘关键词。第三,空泛的效果句:makes it more interesting或makes the reader want to read on这类套话等于没有分析,效果必须具体到某种情绪或氛围。

Six habits lose marks. First, feature spotting: writing uses a simile and stopping, with no effect, cannot reach the middle bands. Second, copying long quotations: a quote longer than one and a half lines crowds out analysis, so quote key words only. Third, vague effect phrases: makes it more interesting or makes the reader want to read on are empty formulae; effects must name a specific emotion or atmosphere. Fourth, retelling: turning the answer into a plot summary earns only the lowest-level marks. Fifth, terminology errors: calling a metaphor a simile, or mixing up sibilance and alliteration, drags down accuracy. Sixth, losing control of time: spending 20 minutes on Question 2 leaves only five minutes for the 20-mark Question 4. Here is the checklist: memorise ten to fifteen terms, each paired with an effect phrase; do one timed 20-minute language answer every week; when you mark it against the AQA level descriptors, identify the single sentence that would lift your band; prepare two or three reusable analysis frames for the exam room; and, whenever you read anything, train yourself to ask why the writer wrote this here, in this way.

语言分析不是玄学,而是一套可以训练的思维习惯:看见选择、解释机制、说出效果。把术语背熟,把What-How-Why练成肌肉记忆,再按分值配好考场时间,AQA GCSE English Language的阅读高分就会变得稳定。把这份框架收藏起来,下次做题时逐条对照,你会发现自己读文章的眼光已经不一样了。

Language analysis is not a mystery; it is a trainable habit of mind: notice the choice, explain the mechanism, and name the effect. Master your terminology, practise What-How-Why until it is automatic, and allocate your exam time by mark value, and your reading scores will become consistent. Keep this framework beside you while you practise, check each answer against it, and you will find that the way you read has already changed.
