Energy and electricity are two core physics topics in Key Stage 3 science (Years 7 to 9, ages 11 to 14) in the UK curriculum. They form the bridge between primary science and GCSE Physics, and many students get confused about energy stores, series and parallel circuits, current, voltage and resistance. This bilingual guide explains every key idea with worked calculations and common misconceptions, so you build a solid foundation before GCSE.
Energy Stores
需要掌握的储存形式有八种:动能 kinetic(运动的物体)、引力势能 gravitational potential(被举高的物体)、弹性势能 elastic potential(被拉伸或压缩的弹簧和橡皮筋)、热能或内能 thermal / internal(物体内部粒子运动)、化学能 chemical(食物、电池、燃料)、核能 nuclear(原子核内部)、磁能 magnetic(磁体之间)、静电势能 electrostatic(带电物体之间)。
In the KS3 model, energy is stored in different energy stores rather than being a visible thing itself. You must know eight stores: kinetic (moving objects), gravitational potential (objects raised up), elastic potential (stretched springs and rubber bands), thermal or internal (particles vibrating inside a warm object), chemical (food, batteries and fuels), nuclear (inside atomic nuclei), magnetic (between magnets) and electrostatic (between charged objects). Exam questions often ask you to name the store in a situation: a wound-up alarm clock stores elastic potential energy, a skier at the top of a hill stores gravitational potential energy, a battery stores chemical energy, and a running student stores kinetic energy.
Energy Transfers and Conservation
Energy can be transferred from one store to another. A burning candle transfers chemical energy into thermal energy and light energy; an electric fan transfers electrical energy into kinetic energy plus a little thermal energy; when you kick a football, chemical energy in your muscles becomes kinetic energy of your leg and then of the ball. Drawing energy transfer diagrams is a common exam skill: for a battery-powered toy car you write chemical -> kinetic + thermal, listing both the useful output and the wasted output on the right.
The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred from one store to another or from one object to another, and the total amount of energy remains constant. When we say energy is "used up", we really mean that useful energy has been transferred into dissipated energy which is very hard to reuse.
Useful Energy and Dissipation
No real device is 100% efficient. Friction, electrical resistance and air resistance turn some energy into thermal energy which spreads to the surroundings; this is dissipated (wasted) energy. A filament lamp transfers electrical energy into light (useful) and heat (dissipated); a car engine turns the chemical energy of fuel into kinetic energy (useful) but a large amount is dissipated as heat from the exhaust and engine. Efficiency measures how much input energy becomes useful output: efficiency = useful output energy ÷ total input energy × 100%.
Worked example: an electric motor receives 200 J of electrical energy and delivers 150 J of kinetic energy, so its efficiency is 150 ÷ 200 × 100% = 75%, and 50 J is dissipated as heat. Ways to reduce dissipation include lubricating moving parts to reduce friction and lagging hot water pipes with insulation to slow down heat loss. Expect application questions like these in the exam.
Circuit Components and Symbols
You must recognise and draw standard symbols for the cell and battery, lamp, switch, resistor, diode (which lets current flow in one direction only), fuse, ammeter (connected in series to measure current) and voltmeter (connected in parallel across a component to measure potential difference). Always draw circuit diagrams with standard symbols rather than pictures of real components, keep connecting wires straight and use right-angle corners; this is a common markscheme requirement and a frequent source of lost marks.
Current flows only in a complete, closed circuit. When the switch is open the circuit is broken (an open circuit), no current flows and the lamp goes out. If a wire connects the two terminals of a cell directly, with no component in between, you create a short circuit: the current becomes very large, the wire heats up quickly, and this is dangerous.
Series and Parallel Circuits
In a series circuit components are connected one after another to form a single loop. The current is the same at every point, but adding another bulb increases the total resistance so every bulb becomes dimmer; if one bulb blows, the whole circuit breaks and all the bulbs go out, like old fairy lights. In a parallel circuit components sit on separate branches; current splits at a junction and each branch works independently, so if one branch fails the others keep working. Home appliances and sockets in the UK are wired in parallel across the 230 V mains so that every appliance receives the same voltage and each can be switched independently.
Remember the rule for parallel circuits: the total current from the cell equals the sum of the branch currents. For example, if the current in the main loop is 0.9 A and one branch carries 0.5 A, the other branch must carry 0.4 A. Typical questions ask you to identify whether a diagram is series or parallel, and to predict what happens to the brightness of the bulbs when one bulb is added or removed.
Current, Potential Difference and Resistance
I = V ÷ R,R = V ÷ I。
Current is the flow of electric charge, measured in amperes (A) with an ammeter placed in series. Potential difference, usually called voltage, is the push that drives charge around the circuit, measured in volts (V) with a voltmeter connected in parallel across a component. Resistance is how strongly a component opposes the current, measured in ohms. Ohm's law connects them: voltage = current × resistance, or V = I × R. Learn the formula triangle and practise rearranging it: I = V ÷ R and R = V ÷ I.
Worked example 1: a 4 ohm resistor has 12 V across it, so the current through it is I = V ÷ R = 12 ÷ 4 = 3 A. Worked example 2: a torch bulb takes 0.5 A from a 6 V battery, so its resistance is R = V ÷ I = 6 ÷ 0.5 = 12 ohms. Always check the units first: voltage in V, current in A and resistance in ohms; substituting with the wrong unit is the most common reason for losing marks in calculation questions.
Common misconception: current is not "used up" as it travels. In a series circuit the current is the same everywhere; a bulb dims because energy is transferred at each component and the potential difference drops along the circuit, not because the current is consumed. Picture current like water flowing in a pipe: the flow does not shrink after turning a water wheel, the wheel only removes some of the energy from the flow.
Mains Electricity and Safety
The UK mains supply comes from the National Grid at 230 V alternating current (a.c.), which constantly changes direction, while cells and batteries provide direct current (d.c.), which flows one way. Because 230 V is far more dangerous than a small battery, electrical safety is always tested. Common hazards include pushing fingers or metal objects into sockets, damaged cables with exposed copper, using appliances near water, and overloading a socket with too many high-power devices.
Know three safety devices: a fuse melts and breaks the circuit when the current becomes too large, protecting the appliance; a circuit breaker does the same job and can simply be reset; the earth wire carries any leaking current safely into the ground so nobody gets a shock. UK cable colours: live is brown, neutral is blue and earth is green and yellow. Double-insulated appliances such as hairdryers and electric toothbrushes have non-conducting cases and need no earth wire. Exam questions often ask you to spot unsafe behaviour in a picture: touching switches with wet hands or daisy-chaining adaptors are always wrong.
Revision Checklist
Use this checklist before your test: can you name eight energy stores with an example of each; draw an energy transfer diagram such as chemical -> kinetic + thermal; state the law of conservation of energy and calculate efficiency; explain the difference between series and parallel and say why home wiring is parallel; rearrange and use V = I x R; and describe the jobs of a fuse, a circuit breaker and an earth wire?
Master these eight areas of KS3 energy and electricity and you have built the conceptual foundation for GCSE Physics. Practise with 5 to 8 mixed questions, focusing on energy transfer diagrams, parallel circuit current calculations and efficiency calculations, then keep a log of your mistakes and review only that log before the test.
