无论你考的是 AQA、Edexcel 还是 OCR,试卷里总有 "Using a named example, explain..."
Case studies are where GCSE Geography marks are won or lost. Every exam board, from AQA to Edexcel and OCR, sets questions that begin with phrases such as "Using a named example, explain..." or "Compare the responses of two different countries to a tectonic event." This article walks through the six most common case study types, so you can memorise the right facts and turn them into structured, high-mark answers.
Look at any past paper and you will see the pattern: almost every extended question demands a named example. An 8-mark question expects a clear location, the event itself, and at least two causes or effects explained with evidence. A 12-mark question goes further, asking you to compare or evaluate, for example how the responses of a low-income country (LIC) and a high-income country (HIC) differed. Definitions alone earn roughly half the marks; case evidence is what unlocks the rest.
The memorisation rule is simple: for each case study store six categories of information: location including country and income level, one or two physical causes, one or two human causes, effects split into social and economic groups, short-term responses, and long-term responses. Turn each one into a single A4 sheet and quiz yourself until the facts come instantly.
On 22 February 2011 a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand, an HIC. The shallow focus and the epicentre only about 10 km from the city centre made the shaking unusually violent. Official figures record 185 deaths, and liquefaction turned stable ground into mud, destroying thousands of homes and forcing the central business district to close for years. Strict building codes saved many lives, but older brick structures could not survive, and reconstruction costs ran into tens of billions of dollars.
The Gorkha earthquake struck Nepal, an LIC, on 25 April 2015 with a magnitude of 7.8. Around 9,000 people died, largely because traditional brick and timber houses had no earthquake-resistant design and building codes were rarely enforced. Remote mountain villages were cut off when landslides blocked the only roads, slowing rescue. In the short term, international search and rescue teams, tents and medical supplies arrived by air; in the long term, Nepal rebuilt schools and hospitals to higher seismic standards and restored damaged heritage sites.
This pairing is the classic comparison answer. Death tolls differed mainly because of wealth, building standards and preparedness, not magnitude alone. In an exam, use this contrast to argue that hazard risk is shaped by human vulnerability as much as by the physical event.
Why are earthquakes harder to prepare for than storms? Because they cannot yet be predicted accurately, so the gap between an HIC and an LIC shows up in preparedness. New Zealand enforces strict building codes, runs regular drills and keeps emergency plans ready, which is why a strong earthquake caused relatively few deaths. Nepal could call on international rescue quickly after the event, but day-to-day investment in prevention is limited. Organise your answer around four stages, prediction, preparation, response and recovery, for the most complete logic.
Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines, an LIC, on 8 November 2013. Sustained winds above 230 km/h made it one of the strongest tropical storms ever recorded at landfall. A storm surge of up to 7 metres swept through the coastal city of Tacloban, and the official death toll reached about 6,300, with more than 4 million people displaced. Fishing boats, rice fields and homes were destroyed across the Visayas region.
For examiners, the interest lies in the response. The Philippines issued early warnings and evacuated more than 800,000 people before landfall, which kept the death toll far lower than it might have been, a clear success for disaster preparedness. However, some evacuation centres were themselves overwhelmed by the surge, exposing the weak infrastructure typical of an LIC. Longer-term responses included building stronger public shelters, restoring mangrove forests as natural coastal defences and upgrading the national early warning system.
Boscastle, a village in Cornwall, England, was devastated by a flash flood on 16 August 2004. The village sits in a steep, narrow valley on impermeable rock, so when more than a month's worth of rain fell in a few hours, water funnelled violently into the two rivers that run through it. Around 100 buildings and dozens of cars were washed away, and debris jammed under bridges, creating temporary dams. Remarkably, no one died, largely because of fast flood warnings and helicopter rescues.
Management can be listed in clear points: riverbanks were raised, bridges were deepened and widened so water could pass, a flood storage dam was built upstream, trees and vegetation were planted to slow runoff, and the Environment Agency improved flood warnings. The human dimension matters too: the village was originally built close to the floodplain, and development increased its vulnerability, a point worth stating when a question asks for human causes of flooding.
Understanding floods through hydrology earns easy marks. In Boscastle the extreme rainfall, impermeable granite bedrock and steep slopes meant runoff reached the rivers almost instantly, so the lag time was very short and the rising limb of the flood hydrograph was steep and dramatic. Urbanisation magnifies the same risk: roofs and tarmac are equally impermeable, and if drains are undersized, even a moderate storm can cause flooding in a town.
Mumbai, one of India's largest cities with a population above 20 million, is the classic LIC urban case study. It grows through both natural increase and rural to urban migration, and a large share of newcomers live in slums. Dharavi, the best known, packs around one million people into roughly 2 square kilometres. The challenges are easy to list: overcrowded housing, limited access to clean water and toilets, an overloaded sewerage system and seasonal flooding during the monsoon.
Slums are not only a problem. Dharavi's leather workshops, pottery kilns and electronic waste recycling yards feed a vast informal economy that employs hundreds of thousands of people and supplies cheap goods to the whole city. A balanced answer recognises this: informal settlements provide affordable labour and strong community networks, which is exactly why redevelopment schemes must consult residents rather than simply clearing land.
Responses include slum redevelopment schemes that rebuild housing with water and electricity connections, expansion of the suburban rail and commuter network, urban renewal projects and community-led self-help improvements. The clearest answer structure pairs each challenge with its solution, for example monsoon flooding matched with drainage upgrades, so the examiner can follow your logic without effort.
高分答案有自己的骨架,推荐 PEEL 结构:Point(论点)、Evidence(案例证据,含地点与数据)、Explain(解释机制,回答 why)、Link(回到题目关键词)。
High-mark answers follow a recognisable structure. Use PEEL: Point, Evidence with location and figures, Explain the mechanism, and Link back to the command word in the question. For an 8-mark question, two developed paragraphs are enough. For a 12-mark evaluation, add comparison connectives such as "whereas" and "in contrast", and finish with an "Overall" judgement that directly answers the question.
The most common ways to drop marks are: narrating the event without explaining the mechanism, writing "a small town in England" instead of naming Boscastle with figures, and mixing HIC and LIC responses together instead of contrasting them. Marking your own practice answers against the official mark scheme is the single fastest way to improve.
Using a named tropical storm, explain how its effects were influenced by the level of development of the area affected (8 marks)"。
Take a real question: "Using a named tropical storm, explain how its effects were influenced by the level of development of the area affected (8 marks)". A skeleton answer has two developed points. Point one: weak infrastructure in an LIC magnifies direct damage, evidenced by the 7 metre surge that flooded Tacloban during Typhoon Haiyan and the roughly 6,300 deaths; the explanation is that building standards were low and shelters could not withstand the surge. Point two: preparation still saved lives, evidenced by the evacuation of over 800,000 people; the explanation is that government warnings and international help reduced the toll, showing that development shapes the capacity to respond rather than the hazard itself.
Two writing tips: for an 8-mark question never write a narrative with a beginning, middle and end; every paragraph must carry a place name or a figure. For a 12-mark evaluation, add one HIC comparison sentence after each point and close with a single overall judgement.
Build one case study sheet per week with all six categories filled in. In the final two weeks, practise with past papers under timed conditions, spending about 8 to 10 minutes on an 8-mark question and 12 to 15 minutes on a 12-mark question. Cross-check the six examples in this article against your own syllabus, and add any missing types such as drought, rainforest destruction or an ageing population using the same six-category format.
