英国National Curriculum在KS2阶段(Year 3到Year 6)把Number and Place Value(数与数位)放在数学学习的核心位置。
In the UK National Curriculum, Number and Place Value sits at the heart of KS2 mathematics, from Year 3 to Year 6. Children move from recognising ones and tens to reading and writing numbers up to ten million, understanding what each digit is worth, comparing and ordering, rounding, and then exploring negative numbers and decimals. This topic underpins every later skill: the four operations, unit conversion, and even algebra at KS3. This bilingual guide explains each idea with worked examples and SATs-style thinking.
Reading and Writing Numbers
例如3,482读作three thousand, four hundred and eighty-two;7,205,601读作seven million, two hundred and five thousand, six hundred and one。
Children must read and write numbers in both digits and words. The key is grouping digits in threes from the right: ones, thousands and millions. For example, 3,482 is three thousand, four hundred and eighty-two, while 7,205,601 is seven million, two hundred and five thousand, six hundred and one. In Chinese the number is grouped in fours (个级, 万级, 亿级), and a run of zeros in the middle is spoken only once, so 7040 is 七千零四十.
含0的数最考验细心:9080读作nine thousand and eighty,9008读作nine thousand and eight,而90,008读作ninety thousand and eight。
Numbers containing zero deserve extra care: 9080 is nine thousand and eighty, 9008 is nine thousand and eight, and 90,008 is ninety thousand and eight. In Chinese, 9008 is 九千零八 and 9800 is 九千八百, where no zero is spoken. Group the digits first and then read each group, and most errors disappear.
常见错误:漏掉and,英国英语习惯在百位与十位之间加and,如four hundred and five;或者把601写成6001。SATs常考"Which number is the same as six hundred and three thousand, four hundred and five?"
Common pitfalls: forgetting "and" between hundreds and tens in British English, or writing 6001 instead of 601. SATs often asks which number matches a written form such as six hundred and three thousand, four hundred and five. Count how many thousands the words mention before writing any digits.
Place Value of Each Digit
Place value means what a digit is worth because of its position. In 8462, the 8 is in the thousands column, so it is worth 8000; the 4 is worth 400, the 6 is worth 60 and the 2 is worth 2. Each column is ten times the column to its right: moving a digit one place left multiplies its value by ten, and one place right divides it by ten. That is why our system is called base 10.
A place value chart is the clearest visual aid. Draw columns for Millions, Hundred Thousands, Ten Thousands, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones, then drop each digit of the number into its own column. In 507,309 the 5 means five hundred thousands and the 7 means seven thousands, while the two zeros are placeholders. Delete them and you get 5,739, a completely different number. Zeros hold the place of missing amounts.
Try a digit-card game: pick four cards and make the largest and smallest 4-digit numbers possible. Put big digits on the left for the largest, such as 9862, and small digits on the left for the smallest, such as 2689. Asking the child to explain why beats simply arranging cards.
Comparing and Ordering Numbers
To compare numbers, first count the digits: a number with more digits is larger, so 999 is less than 1000. When the digit counts match, compare from the highest place downwards. The symbol greater-than opens towards the bigger number, so 5721 is greater than 5699 because 7 hundreds beats 6 hundreds. Ordering questions ask children to sort a set of numbers in ascending or descending order, often into boxes on a SATs grid.
A classic trap: children think 389 is bigger than 402 because 9 is a large digit. Both numbers have three digits, so compare the hundreds first: 3 is less than 4, so 389 is less than 402. The ones digit only matters when every higher column is equal.
Rounding Numbers
Rounding gives an approximate value that is close enough. Look at the digit immediately to the right of the place you are rounding to: if it is 4 or less, round down; if it is 5 or more, round up. Round 3684 to the nearest thousand: the hundreds digit is 6, so round up to 4000. To the nearest ten it is 3680, and to the nearest hundred it is 3700. Rounding to 10 and 100 starts in Year 4, extends to 1000 and 10,000 in Year 5, and by Year 6 covers any place value.
Real uses include estimating a shopping bill, saying a crowd was about 50,000, and weighing to the nearest kilogram. SATs asks for answers such as "Round 4572 to the nearest 100" and for judgements about whether an estimate is sensible. Remember the special case: exactly 5 rounds up, so 45 rounds to 50.
5. 负数 Negative Numbers
Negative numbers are less than zero and sit to the left of 0 on a number line. Children meet them in Year 4, count and place them on a line in Year 5, and solve problems such as temperature differences in Year 6. If the temperature rises from minus 3 at night to plus 4 in the day, the rise is 7 degrees: count the jumps from -3 to 4 on the number line. The line never ends, and 0 always separates negatives from positives.
Write a number that is 4 less than -1"这类题,从-1往左数4格,答案是-5。
A common error is thinking -8 is bigger than -2. Further left on the number line means smaller, and -8 is further from 0, so -8 is less than -2. Bank overdrafts, basement floors and depths below sea level all make negatives feel real. SATs may ask for a number 4 less than -1: count four steps left from -1, and the answer is -5.
Decimal Place Value
Place value continues to the right of the decimal point: tenths are 0.1, hundredths are 0.01 and thousandths are 0.001. In 3.27 the 2 means two tenths and the 7 means seven hundredths, so 3.27 equals 3 plus 0.2 plus 0.07. Seeing that 0.5 is one half prepares children for fraction and decimal conversion in Years 5 and 6. When multiplying or dividing by 10 the digits shift; the decimal point stays put.
Compare 2.3 and 2.29. The ones are both 2, and 3 tenths beats 2 tenths, so 2.3 is greater than 2.29. Many children wrongly choose 2.29 because 29 looks bigger than 3, confusing hundredths with whole units. Splitting each number into ones, tenths and hundredths makes the comparison obvious.
Multiplying and Dividing by 10, 100 and 1000
These digit-shift questions appear in SATs almost every year. Multiplying by 10 moves every digit one column left, so 47 x 10 = 470, and multiplying by 100 moves digits two columns, so 47 x 100 = 4700. Dividing by 10 moves every digit one column right: 470 divided by 10 is 47. The shortcut "multiplying by 10 adds a zero" happens to work for whole numbers but misleads children with decimals; the real rule is that digits move.
Decimals follow the same law. In 3.6 x 10 the 3 moves from ones to tens and the 6 from tenths to ones, so the answer is 36. In 8.09 x 100 the 8 moves to the hundreds column, the 0 to the tens column and the 9 to the ones column, giving 809. Ask where each digit travels before writing anything down.
Exam tip: when a question says "multiply 0.4 by 100", sketch the columns first. The 0 sits in the ones column and the 4 in the tenths column. Shift both digits two places left: the 4 lands in the tens column while the 0 stays as a placeholder, so the answer is 40, never 4.
SATs Key Takeaways
Every rule flows from one idea: each column is ten times its right-hand neighbour. Group digits to read big numbers, compare digit counts before comparing digits, and treat x10 and division by 10 as digit shifts. Rounding depends only on the first digit to the right of the target place. Compare negatives on a number line and decimals by splitting into place values, and read exam wording twice: nearest 10 or nearest 100, ascending or descending.
第一题:写出与four hundred and seven thousand, six hundred and three相等的数字。
Try these three SATs-style questions before reading the answers. Question 1: write the number that matches four hundred and seven thousand, six hundred and three. Question 2: round 7634 to the nearest ten. Question 3: a number is 5 less than -3, what is it?
Answers and explanations. Question 1: 407,603, verifiable by placing 4, 0, 7, 6, 0, 3 into the columns from hundred thousands down to ones; both zeros are placeholders. Question 2: the ones digit is 4, which is less than 5, so round down to 7630. Question 3: start at -3 and jump five steps left to reach -8. Answering all three correctly means the foundations are solid.
For parents: ten minutes a day of quick place-value talk makes a real difference. Ask what the 6 is worth in 8674, answer 600, or write today's date in words, and let the child estimate change at the shops. Children with a secure grasp of place value usually score full marks on these questions in both the KS2 SATs Arithmetic and Reasoning papers.
