KS2 拼写规则 Spelling 复数 双写 考点
英国小学阶段(KS2,7到11岁,Year 3 至 Year 6)的英语学习里,拼写(spelling)是家长最容易忽视、却是考试和写作中失分最多的一项。孩子能读会算,但一写单词就错:复数忘记加 es,动词加 ing 不知道双写,同音词混用。这些问题不是孩子粗心,而是没有掌握拼写背后的规则。
English spelling at Key Stage 2, covering children aged 7 to 11 in Years 3 to 6, is one of the most overlooked yet highest-scoring areas of the curriculum. A child may read fluently and calculate confidently, yet lose marks constantly in writing: plurals without -es, missing doubled consonants before -ing, and confused homophones such as their, there and they're. These are not careless mistakes. They appear when a child has never been taught the patterns and rules that govern English spelling, and the Year 6 SATs spelling paper tests exactly these rules.
1. KS2 Spelling Test 六年级拼写测试概况
在 Year 6 结束时的 SATs 考试中,英语科目包含一份专门的拼写测试(English grammar, punctuation and spelling test)。拼写部分约 20 道题:老师把每个单词放进句子中朗读,学生必须正确拼写并写进空格。整个国家课程还规定了两个法定词表:Year 3 和 Year 4 共用约 100 个高频词,Year 5 和 Year 6 再增加约 100 个,这些词必须逐一会写。
In the Year 6 SATs, English is assessed with a dedicated grammar, punctuation and spelling test. The spelling paper contains around 20 questions: the teacher reads each word aloud inside a sentence, and the pupil must write the missing word correctly in the space provided. The National Curriculum also publishes two statutory word lists, roughly one hundred words shared by Years 3 and 4 and a further one hundred for Years 5 and 6, and every word on these lists is expected to be spelled from memory.
很多家长不知道,拼写能力其实被评估两次:一次是专门的拼写试卷,另一次是 Year 6 写作的教师评估,拼写错误过多会直接压低写作等级。国家课程要求,到 Year 6 结束时,学生应能正确拼写大部分常用词、各学科的专业词汇,并能运用词根、前缀和后缀的知识推断陌生单词的写法。拼写弱的孩子作文常常被低估,因为评分老师根本读不懂他们写的内容。
Many parents do not realise that spelling is assessed twice: once in the dedicated SATs paper and again inside the Year 6 teacher assessment for writing, where persistent errors cap the level a child can reach. The National Curriculum requires that by the end of Year 6 a child spells most common words correctly, handles technical vocabulary from every subject, and uses roots, prefixes and suffixes to work out how unfamiliar words are written. Weak spellers are frequently under-marked in writing simply because examiners cannot read what they have produced.
2. Plural Rules
Most nouns simply add -s: cat becomes cats and book becomes books. Nouns ending in s, x, ch or sh need -es so the plural is easy to pronounce: box becomes boxes, bus becomes buses, watch becomes watches. If a noun ends in a consonant plus y, change the y to i and add -es: baby becomes babies and fly becomes flies; after a vowel plus y, just add -s, so boy becomes boys and day becomes days. Some nouns ending in f or fe change to -ves, as in leaf to leaves and knife to knives, although roofs is a common exception. Irregular plurals simply have to be learned one by one: child becomes children, mouse becomes mice, foot becomes feet, and sheep stays sheep.
一条快速判断技巧:把复数词大声读出来,如果结尾听起来像 iz,基本就要加 es。例如 boxes 读作 box-iz,wishes 读作 wish-iz。练习时把规则词和例外词分两栏整理,例外词做成小卡片每天过一遍,坚持两周,复数拼写错误基本就能消除。
A quick oral test helps: say the plural aloud, and if the ending sounds like iz, the word almost certainly needs -es, exactly as boxes sounds like box-iz and wishes like wish-iz. When practising, sort words into a rules column and an exceptions column, review the exception flashcards daily for two weeks, and plural errors will largely disappear.
3. Doubling Rule
When a short word ends in one vowel followed by one consonant, a CVC pattern such as hop, run or big, and you add a suffix that begins with a vowel like -ing, -ed or -er, the final consonant doubles: hop becomes hopping, run becomes runner, big becomes biggest, swim becomes swimming. Contrast hope: it ends in a silent e, so hoping simply drops the e and never doubles. In two-syllable words the stress decides: begin carries stress on the last syllable, so we write beginning with double n, while visit is stressed on the first syllable, so visiting keeps a single t. In British spelling, words such as travel double the l regardless of stress, giving travelling.
为什么必须双写?因为双写能让前面的元音保持短音。对比 hoping 与 hopping:hoping 里的 o 读长音,意思是希望;hopping 里的 o 读短音,因为双写了 p,意思是跳跃。不双写,读者就会读错词。写作时问自己两个问题:这个词是不是短元音加单个辅音结尾?后缀是不是以元音开头?两个答案都是肯定,就双写。把 hoping 想成单 p 的希望,hopping 想成双 p 的跳跃,从此不再混淆。
Why double at all? The doubled consonant keeps the vowel before it short, exactly as hoping and hopping demonstrate: hoping has a long o and means wishing, while hopping has a short o because of the double p and means jumping. Without doubling, the reader would mispronounce the word. When writing, ask two questions: does the word end in a single consonant after a short vowel, and does the suffix begin with a vowel? Two yes answers mean double. Link the pair in your mind: hoping, to wish, keeps one p, while hopping, to jump, takes two, and the confusion vanishes.
A large share of KS2 spelling errors involves the silent e. Rule one: when a word ends in silent e and the suffix begins with a vowel, drop the e, so make becomes making, like becomes liking and love becomes lovable; when the suffix begins with a consonant, keep the e, giving hopeful from hope, careful from care and notable from note. Rule two: the letters c and g are soft before e, i and y, which is why city, cycle, gem and giant sound soft, while a final soft c is usually written ce as in dance, a final soft g as ge as in huge, and the j sound after a short vowel is written dge as in badge, judge and bridge. After a short vowel the hard c sound at the end of a word is written ck: back, clock, duck.
The third silent-e trap is words ending in ce or ge. When the suffix begins with a or o, the e must stay so the soft sound survives: notice becomes noticeable, courage becomes courageous and manage becomes manageable. Dropping the e would turn noticeable into a word that looks and sounds entirely different. Also separate ge from dge: long vowels take ge as in age, huge and page, while the j sound after a short vowel is written dge as in edge, fridge and knowledge. These patterns sit directly in the Year 5 statutory word list.
5. Prefixes and Suffixes
Year 5 和 6 的难点是 ough 家族:though, through, cough, rough, enough, 拼写与读音几乎无关,只能逐个记忆。
Affixes are the core of the KS2 word lists. Prefixes generally leave the root unchanged: un plus happy gives unhappy, dis plus appear gives disappear, mis plus spell gives misspell with a doubled s because the root starts with s, and re plus write gives rewrite. Suffixes cause more spelling changes: a word ending in a consonant plus y changes y to i before -ness or -ly, so happy becomes happiness and happily, but keeps the y before -ing as in flying. The adjective suffix -ful carries a single l, giving careful from care, and adding -ly then produces carefully. Verbs become nouns with -tion, so educate becomes education and invent becomes invention; after ss we add -ion to make -ssion, as in express to expression, and people's jobs use -cian, as in magician and musician. The notorious -ough family belongs to Years 5 and 6: though, through, cough, rough and enough look similar yet sound completely different, and each one must simply be memorised.
Affix questions occupy a fair share of the SATs grammar paper, so learn with word family maps: write a root such as act in the centre and radiate active, action, actor, react and activity around it. Every time a new suffix appears, attach it to three known words and write each result in a sentence. The classic traps: an adjective ending in y changes to i before -ly, so easy becomes easily, yet shy keeps the y in shyly; a word ending in le drops the e and adds y, so gentle becomes gently and possible becomes possibly. No rule separates -able from -ible, so high-frequency words such as comfortable, reliable, possible and terrible must simply be learned.
6. Homophones 同音词辨析
同音词是 KS2 拼写测试和写作评分里的重灾区。最常考的一组是 there(那里)与 their(他们的)和 they're(他们是);其次是 to, too, two 三兄弟;its(它的)与 it's(它是)的区分只看有无省略号。其他高频组合包括:here 与 hear,where 与 wear,new 与 knew,sea 与 see,write 与 right,one 与 won,no 与 know,weather 与 whether,brake 与 break。英式英语还要注意 practice(名词)与 practise(动词),以及 affect(动词影响)与 effect(名词影响),advice(名词)与 advise(动词)。记忆口诀可以帮助区分:比如用句子 I hear with my ear 记住 hear 里有 ear。
Homophones cause the heaviest losses in the KS2 spelling test and in writing assessment. The most examined set is there, meaning a place, their, meaning belonging to them, and they're, short for they are. The trio to, too and two comes next, and the difference between its, meaning belonging to it, and it's, short for it is, depends entirely on the apostrophe. Other frequent pairs include here and hear, where and wear, new and knew, sea and see, write and right, one and won, no and know, weather and whether, brake and break. British English adds practice the noun versus practise the verb, affect the verb versus effect the noun, and advice the noun versus advise the verb. Simple mnemonics fix the trickiest ones: remember that hear contains ear by saying I hear with my ear.
把同音词放进对照句里记忆效果最好:They're putting their books over there,意思是他(她)们把他们的书放在那边,一个句子里同时出现 they're, their, there 三种写法。再看 It's raining,so the dog stays in its basket,下雨了,狗待在它的篮子里,it's 与 its 一目了然。每周挑一组同音词,用造句比赛的方式巩固,孩子在笑声中就记住了。考试时如果拿不准,先把句子在脑中译成中文,再判断空格需要哪个意思。
Homophones stick best inside a single contrast sentence: They're putting their books over there uses they're, their and there together, and It's raining, so the dog stays in its basket sets it's against its in one glance. Choose one homophone set per week and hold a sentence-writing contest, and children absorb the differences while laughing. In the test, when unsure, translate the sentence mentally and decide which meaning the gap demands.
Ten minutes a day from Year 3 beats frantic revision before the test. Start with the Look, Cover, Write, Check routine: study the word, cover it, write it from memory, then check, and add every misspelling to a personal error book. Learn by word families instead of single words: sign, signal and signature share a root, so knowing one gives you three. Dictate five full sentences each day so words are practised in context rather than as isolated letter strings. Use silly mnemonics for stubborn words, for example because becomes Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants. Finally, work through the statutory word lists for Years 3 to 6 and practise the real SATs format, where the teacher reads a sentence aloud and the child fills in the blank. Spelling is a habit, not a talent; rules plus daily practice will push any child's score up.
给家长一份简单时间表:每天 10 分钟,周一学 5 个新词,周二到周四每天听写 5 个句子并用四步法纠错,周五做一次 10 词的迷你拼写测试,错词自动进入下周一的复习清单。纠正时不要直接告诉答案,要让孩子对比自己的写法与正确写法,并说出规则,例如,这里为什么双写 p?孩子才能真正内化规律,而不是靠死记硬背应付考试。坚持一个学期,拼写成绩和写作质量都会有明显提升。
A simple timetable for parents: ten minutes a day, learn five new words on Monday, dictate five sentences and correct them with the four-step routine from Tuesday to Thursday, and run a ten-word mini spelling test on Friday, with every error feeding automatically into Monday's review list. When correcting, avoid supplying the answer directly; let the child compare their attempt with the correct spelling and explain the rule aloud, asking why the p is doubled here. Children then internalise the pattern instead of memorising for the test, and one term of this routine lifts both spelling scores and the overall quality of their writing.
