The Cold War is the compulsory period study on Edexcel GCSE History Paper 2, covering 1941 to 1991: how the USA and the USSR moved from wartime allies through total confrontation to a peaceful end. The topic is packed with events and dates, but the exam questions are highly predictable. Master six threads (the breaking of the Grand Alliance, the Iron Curtain, the Berlin Crisis, the crisis years, detente and the Second Cold War, and the road to the end), memorise the key dates and precise facts, and you can score consistently on both explain and importance questions.

During the Second World War, Britain, the USA and the USSR formed the Grand Alliance against Nazi Germany, but the three great wartime conferences exposed deepening splits. At Yalta in February 1945 the mood was still cooperative: Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill agreed on the partition of Germany, the creation of the United Nations and spheres of influence in Eastern Europe. By Potsdam in July 1945 the atmosphere had soured. Truman, the new American president, took a much tougher line and no longer trusted Stalin. The underlying cause was ideological: the capitalist democracy of the USA versus the communist dictatorship of the USSR, which wanted a buffer zone of friendly states on its western border. After the successful atomic bomb test, Truman felt the USA no longer needed Soviet help against Japan, so he saw no reason to make concessions.

苏联则以组建共产党情报局 Cominform(1947)和经济互助委员会 Comecon(1949)回应。

After 1945 the USSR turned the countries of Eastern Europe into satellite states, installing pro-Soviet communist governments to create a buffer zone against any future invasion from the West. In March 1946 Churchill gave his famous Iron Curtain speech at Fulton in the USA, warning that Stalin was drawing an iron curtain across Europe, and the propaganda war of the Cold War began. In 1947 Truman announced the Truman Doctrine, a policy of containment that offered aid to Greece and Turkey to stop communism spreading. In the same year the USA launched the Marshall Plan, pouring billions of dollars into rebuilding Western Europe so that poverty and unemployment would not push voters towards communism. Stalin answered with Cominform in 1947 and Comecon in 1949, tightening Soviet control over its satellites. Europe was now split into two rival blocs, and the pattern of the Cold War was fixed.

After the war Germany was divided into four occupation zones, and Berlin, lying deep inside the Soviet zone, was itself split into four sectors. In June 1948 Britain, France and the USA introduced a new currency, the Deutschmark, into their zones. Stalin feared that a prosperous, united West Berlin would be a shop window for capitalism, so he cut off all road, rail and canal links to the city, starting the Berlin Blockade in the hope of forcing the West out. The West refused to abandon Berlin and launched the Berlin Airlift instead: between June 1948 and May 1949 Allied planes made about 275,000 flights carrying food, coal and medicine to the people of West Berlin. In May 1949 Stalin gave up and lifted the blockade. The crisis hardened the division of Europe: NATO was formed in April 1949, West Germany (the Federal Republic) and East Germany (the German Democratic Republic) were created in 1949, and the USSR set up the Warsaw Pact in 1955. Berlin became the front line of the Cold War.

After Stalin died in 1953, Khrushchev talked about peaceful coexistence, yet the crises became more intense. In 1956 the Hungarian Uprising broke out: Imre Nagy announced that Hungary would leave the Warsaw Pact, and Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest to crush the revolt. Around 200,000 Hungarians fled to the West, and the West's promises to liberate Eastern Europe were exposed as empty words. In August 1961 East Germany built the Berlin Wall overnight to stop its citizens escaping to the West; the Wall became the most powerful symbol of a divided Europe. The most dangerous moment came in 1962 with the Cuban Missile Crisis. When American U-2 spy planes photographed Soviet nuclear missiles being installed in Cuba, Kennedy imposed a naval blockade and the world came closer than ever to nuclear war. After thirteen tense days Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles, while the USA secretly promised to remove its missiles from Turkey and never to invade Cuba. The two superpowers then set up a hotline, and in 1963 they signed the Partial Test Ban Treaty, easing the immediate danger of nuclear conflict.

In 1968 the Prague Spring broke out in Czechoslovakia: Dubcek launched reforms promising socialism with a human face, and the USSR invaded with Warsaw Pact troops to crush the experiment. Brezhnev then announced the Brezhnev Doctrine, claiming the right to intervene in any communist state that threatened the bloc. The 1970s, however, brought detente. In 1972 the USA and the USSR signed SALT 1, limiting the numbers of nuclear missiles; in 1975 the Helsinki Accords recognised Europe's existing borders and committed both sides to respect human rights. Detente collapsed when the USSR invaded Afghanistan in 1979. The USA boycotted the Moscow Olympics of 1980, and President Reagan, who called the USSR an evil empire and pushed the Strategic Defense Initiative (nicknamed Star Wars), presided over a renewed arms race known as the Second Cold War.

Gorbachev became Soviet leader in 1985 and faced a stagnant economy. He introduced glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring), and announced a new thinking in foreign policy: the USSR would no longer use force to keep its satellites in line and every country could choose its own path. He met Reagan at summits in Geneva (1985), Reykjavik (1986) and Washington (1987), where the INF Treaty eliminated an entire class of nuclear weapons for the first time. In 1989 communist governments across Eastern Europe collapsed, the Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989, Germany was reunified in 1990, and the USSR itself broke up in December 1991. The Cold War ended peacefully through internal reform and collapse on the Soviet side rather than through Western military victory, and explaining why that happened is a favourite exam question.

Cold War questions on Paper 2 come in two main types. Explain questions (8 marks) need two reasons, each built as fact plus consequence, for example explaining why the Berlin Blockade happened in 1948-49. Importance questions (16 marks) ask you to judge how important an event was; the winning structure is the event's immediate impact, its short-term and long-term consequences, and a comparison with other events. Examiners reward specific detail, not vague generalisations, so memorising dates, names and treaty titles beats memorising conclusions. Build a timeline of the key moments: the Iron Curtain speech 1946; the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan 1947; the Berlin Blockade and Airlift 1948-49; NATO 1949; Hungary 1956; the Berlin Wall 1961; the Cuban Missile Crisis 1962; the Prague Spring 1968; SALT 1 1972; Helsinki 1975; the invasion of Afghanistan 1979; Gorbachev 1985; the INF Treaty 1987; the fall of the Berlin Wall 1989; and the collapse of the USSR 1991. For each event write a five-element card (date, causes, what happened, results, impact on the Cold War) and practise recalling it from memory before the exam.
