Astrophysics in IB Physics HL pushes mechanics, thermal physics and atomic physics out to a cosmic scale: from stellar parallax and black-body radiation to the Hubble law and the Big Bang model. The calculations follow fixed routines and every formula sits in the Data Booklet, so this is one of the most rewarding topics to revise. This article walks through the high-frequency ideas on stars and cosmology in parallel Chinese and English.
Parallax and the Parsec
The basic way to measure stellar distance is annual parallax. As the Earth orbits the Sun, it moves 2 AU in half a year, so a nearby star appears to shift slightly against the background of distant stars; half of that angular swing is the parallax angle p in arcseconds. The distance d in parsecs is d = 1 / p. One parsec is about 3.26 light-years, or 3.09 × 10^16 m. Parallax works only for relatively nearby stars because telescopes have a finite angular resolution; ground-based instruments reach only a few tens of parsecs, while the Hipparcos and Gaia satellites extend the range to thousands of parsecs.
Worked example: a star has parallax p = 0.05 arcsec, so d = 1 / 0.05 = 20 pc. Converting to light-years: 20 × 3.26 = 65.2 ly. Always plug the parallax in arcseconds; if the question gives degrees or arcminutes, convert first (1 degree = 3600 arcsec). This unit slip is the most common mark-loser in this topic.
Apparent and Absolute Magnitude
Magnitude is a logarithmic scale: the smaller the number, the brighter the star. The apparent magnitude m is how bright the star looks from Earth, and it depends on both the true luminosity L and the distance d through apparent brightness b = L / (4πd²). To make magnitude a property of the star alone, astronomers define the absolute magnitude M: the apparent magnitude the star would have if placed at 10 pc. The distance modulus is m - M = 5 log10(d / 10) with d in pc. A difference of one magnitude corresponds to a brightness ratio of 10^(2/5) ≈ 2.512, and five magnitudes is exactly a factor of 100. The Sun has m ≈ -26.7 and M ≈ +4.8.
Worked example: a star has m = 6.0 and M = 1.0, so 5 = 5 log10(d / 10), giving log10(d / 10) = 1 and d = 100 pc. The reverse route: given luminosity L and distance d, compute b = L / (4πd²) first, then compare with a known reference such as the Sun to find the magnitude difference.
Black-Body Radiation
Stars behave approximately as black bodies, so their spectra are set by surface temperature. Wien's displacement law links the peak wavelength to temperature: λmax T = 2.9 × 10^-3 m·K. Hotter stars peak at shorter wavelengths and look bluer; cooler stars look redder. The Stefan-Boltzmann law gives the luminosity in terms of radius and temperature: L = 4πR² σ T⁴, with σ = 5.67 × 10^-8 W m^-2 K^-4. Luminosity scales as radius squared and temperature to the fourth power: doubling the radius multiplies L by 4, doubling T multiplies L by 16. This is the physical reason stars spread out the way they do on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.
Worked example: a star has surface temperature 6000 K, so λmax = 2.9 × 10^-3 / 6000 ≈ 4.8 × 10^-7 m, about 480 nm, in the blue-green part of the visible spectrum. If another star has twice the Sun's temperature and the same radius, its luminosity is 2⁴ = 16 times the Sun's. Temperatures must be in kelvin; never substitute Celsius values.
HR Diagram and Stellar Evolution
The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram plots surface temperature or spectral class on the horizontal axis and luminosity on the vertical axis. Most stars sit on the main sequence, running from hot, luminous stars at the top left to cool, faint stars at the bottom right; main-sequence stars fuse hydrogen in their cores, and higher mass means higher temperature, higher luminosity and a shorter lifetime. Above the main sequence lie red giants and red supergiants, enormous but cool; the bottom left holds white dwarfs, small, hot and dim. The evolution path is set by the initial mass: a Sun-like star expands into a red giant when core hydrogen runs out, fuses helium into carbon and oxygen, then sheds its outer layers and leaves a white dwarf; massive stars run heavier fusion chains up to an iron core, which collapses and triggers a supernova, leaving a neutron star or a black hole. The Chandrasekhar limit of about 1.4 solar masses is the upper bound for a stable white dwarf.
Typical exam questions present an HR diagram and ask you to identify the stage of a star, compare the luminosity and temperature of two stars, or explain the width of the main sequence. The reasoning rests on two levers: temperature fixes the power radiated per unit area through the Stefan-Boltzmann law, and radius fixes the total area; at equal temperature the more luminous star must have the larger radius.
Redshift and the Hubble Law
When a source moves away from an observer, the received wavelength lengthens and spectral lines shift toward the red end; that is redshift. It is quantified as z = (λ_obs - λ_rest) / λ_rest, and for low speeds with v much smaller than c, z ≈ v / c. In 1929 Hubble found that the redshift of galaxies is proportional to distance: v = H0 d, now called the Hubble law, with the Hubble constant H0 usually taken around 70 km/s/Mpc. It is direct evidence for an expanding universe: galaxies are not flying through space, rather space itself is stretching and carrying them apart. The Hubble law also gives a rough age for the universe, t ≈ 1 / H0, which works out to about 14 billion years for 70 km/s/Mpc, consistent with the refined value of 13.8 billion years.
Worked example: a galaxy's spectral line has rest wavelength 656.3 nm and observed wavelength 662.5 nm, so z = (662.5 - 656.3) / 656.3 ≈ 0.00945 and the recessional speed is v ≈ 0.00945c ≈ 2830 km/s. With H0 = 70 km/s/Mpc the distance is d = v / H0 ≈ 2830 / 70 ≈ 40 Mpc. Watch three traps: take the ratio against the rest wavelength, convert the speed to km/s before dividing by H0, and read carefully whether the answer should be in Mpc, light-years or parsecs.
Dark Matter, Dark Energy and the Big Bang
The Big Bang model rests on three classic observational pillars. First, the cosmic microwave background: theory predicted that the cooled, expanding universe should be filled with black-body radiation of about 3 K, and in 1965 Penzias and Wilson detected an isotropic 2.7 K microwave background, a landmark confirmation. Second, light-element abundances: primordial nucleosynthesis should have produced about 75% hydrogen and 25% helium by mass, matching observations. Third is the galactic recession embodied in the Hubble law. Evidence for dark matter comes mainly from galaxy rotation curves: stars at the outer edge of a galaxy orbit faster than Kepler's law predicts, implying invisible mass; dark matter makes up about 27% of the universe's mass-energy. Evidence for dark energy comes from Type Ia supernova surveys: the expansion is accelerating, not slowing, and dark energy, about 68% of the total, drives that acceleration.
Conceptual questions often ask how a piece of evidence supports the model. Use the template: state the prediction such as the background temperature, give the observed value of 2.7 K, then state the agreement. Do not confuse dark matter with dark energy: dark matter acts gravitationally to bind galaxies and flatten rotation curves, while dark energy acts as a repulsion that accelerates the expansion.
Exam Techniques and Common Traps
Nearly every astrophysics calculation runs along five main lines: parallax and parsec conversion, the distance modulus m - M, Wien's law for temperature, the Stefan-Boltzmann law for comparing luminosities, and redshift combined with the Hubble law for speed and distance. Learn where each formula sits in the Data Booklet, write the equation before substituting numbers, and keep units in SI where needed, converting parsecs to metres when the question demands it. For ratio comparisons, set the unknown star's L, R and T proportional to the Sun's, cancel π and σ symbolically, and the arithmetic shrinks by half.
One final reminder: write out intermediate values such as distance, luminosity or temperature before feeding them into the next step, because method marks are generous. In conceptual answers, close with a sentence linking back to observation rather than stating a bare conclusion. Astrophysics rewards practice: two passes over the relevant calculation questions in the last five years of past papers will raise your score noticeably.
