Criterion A(Focus and Method,选题与方法)占6分,而Criterion A的根基就是Research Question(研究问题)。

The Extended Essay is one of the three core components of the IB Diploma, and Criterion A (Focus and Method) is worth 6 of the 24 marks. At the heart of Criterion A sits the research question. A well-designed research question gives the whole essay a clear direction; a weak one, no matter how hard you work later, will be judged as unfocused by the examiner. This article explains, in bilingual detail, how to design a strong EE research question, which pitfalls to avoid, and how to check your own question before you start.

Marking starts with the question itself. When an examiner opens your EE, the first judgement is: what exactly does this essay set out to answer? Is the question focused, arguable, and achievable within 4000 words? If your research question contains three or more sub-questions, or is broad enough for a PhD thesis, you immediately lose marks in Criterion A, and Criteria B through E suffer too, because the whole essay is built on an unfocused foundation.

好的研究问题必须同时满足Specific(具体)、Arguable(可论证)、Feasible(可行)三条标准。

A strong research question must meet three hard standards at the same time: it must be specific, arguable, and feasible. Specific means the object, scope, time period or region is clear: instead of discussing the Chinese economy in general, ask how export structure in the Yangtze River Delta manufacturing sector changed after WTO accession in 2001. Arguable means the answer is not a simple yes or no, but leaves room for analysis and competing positions. Feasible means you can actually obtain data, literature or primary sources under school conditions, and can complete the argument within 4000 words.

Step one is to choose a broad topic you genuinely care about, such as the Cold War in History or monetary policy in Economics. Step two is to narrow it into a specific research area, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis or the Federal Reserve quantitative easing after 2008. Step three is to shape the area into an answerable question: to what extent did the Kennedy administrations naval blockade contribute to the peaceful resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis? At every step, ask yourself: can this be narrowed even further?

The first common mistake is an over-broad question such as how technology has changed education, which would need a whole book. The second is a yes or no question such as whether artificial intelligence will replace human jobs: one word answers the question and there is no room for argument. The third is purely descriptive, such as describing the life of Napoleon, which only lists facts without analysis. The fourth is a question whose data is unobtainable, such as comparing life satisfaction between Ming and Qing dynasty citizens. The fifth carries such a strong built-in value judgement that the examiner sees a conclusion already assumed rather than research being conducted.

一个成熟的研究问题往往包含因果连接词或分析性动词,例如to what extent(在多大程度上)、how far(到何种程度)、analyse(分析)、evaluate(评估)、compare and contrast(比较与对照)。

A mature research question usually contains a causal link or an analytical verb: to what extent, how far, analyse, evaluate, or compare and contrast. A question beginning with to what extent carries its own argumentative structure: present evidence for one side, qualify it with counter-evidence, then reach a balanced judgement. This structure maps directly onto the EE assessment criteria, and it gives your 4000 words a natural skeleton.

Before you start writing, run your question through six checks. First, can it be fully answered within 4000 words? Second, does it allow a complex conclusion that partly agrees and partly disagrees? Third, can you obtain supporting material from the school library, databases or first-hand interviews? Fourth, does it belong to one subject rather than straddling three disciplines at once? Fifth, read it aloud: can a classmate understand what you are researching within fifteen seconds? Sixth, hand it to your supervisor and see whether they can immediately point out one or two directions worth pursuing. If all six checks pass, your research question is truly ready.

The IB requires three to five formal reflection sessions with your supervisor, and the core task of the first meeting is to finalise the research question. Prepare two or three candidate questions before the meeting. For each one, list the sources you plan to use, your initial line of argument, and the difficulties you anticipate. Do not walk in empty-handed and ask what topic you should choose. Instead, show your thinking: I lean towards question A because it lets me use the secondary data in the school database, but question B has richer literature. What do you think? Concrete questions produce concrete, actionable feedback.

Here is a pair of real rewrites. The weak version: should drugs be legalised? It is far too broad and starts from a fixed position. The strong version: compare the cannabis decriminalisation policies of Portugal and the Netherlands after 2001 and evaluate their impact on youth drug use rates. The object, countries, time frame and measured indicator are all explicit. Another pair: the weak version, is Shakespeares work great, is purely subjective and untestable. The strong version, analyse the use of sleep imagery in Macbeth and discuss how it reflects the protagonists moral decline, has a clear object of analysis and a clear argumentative path. The single rule behind every rewrite is simple: replace abstract nouns with concrete objects, and replace general verbs with analytical verbs.

After the research question is finalised, three closing steps remain. First, copy the question verbatim onto the cover page and the opening of the abstract so every section of the essay keeps answering it. Second, break the question into two or three sub-questions and use them as the basis of your chapter headings, so the argument never drifts off-topic. Third, send a short email to your supervisor with the final question and your writing timeline, and ask for confirmation. Once these three steps are done, you have effectively completed the hardest thirty percent of the EE before you write a single word.

Research Question的影响远不止Criterion A。

The influence of the research question reaches far beyond Criterion A. A clearly bounded question automatically improves Criterion B (Knowledge and Understanding), because you know exactly what to read and what data to collect. It improves Criterion C (Critical Thinking), because the argument has a clear target. It even improves Criterion E (Engagement), because you can explain in your first reflection session why you chose this question. In other words, the research question is the leverage point of the whole EE: one hour spent sharpening the question beats ten hours spent rescuing an essay that started in the wrong direction.

Imagine your starting idea is simply: I want to write about financial crises. This is a starting point, not a research question. The first narrowing move is to fix the country and the time frame: change financial crises into the US policy response during the 2008 global financial crisis. The second move is to choose an analytical angle: in Economics you could compare the Fed with the European Central Bank, or evaluate the real effect of quantitative easing on the labour market. The third move is to add an analytical verb and define the measured indicator, finally producing: evaluate the impact of Federal Reserve quantitative easing on the US unemployment rate between 2008 and 2012. In this version, the research object, time frame, policy tool and measured indicator are all explicit, and the six marks of Criterion A are secured.
