In UK undergraduate admissions, the G5 stands for Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, the London School of Economics (LSE) and University College London (UCL). For Chinese students taking A-level or the IB Diploma, these five universities are the dream targets and the most important benchmark when building a school list. This bilingual guide compares them across positioning, grade requirements, admissions tests, interviews, personal statements and timelines, and ends with a practical checklist.
The five schools have very different characters, so decide what you want before applying. Oxford and Cambridge are collegiate universities covering nearly every subject: Oxford dominates in mathematics, PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics), law, English literature and biomedical sciences, while Cambridge is world-famous for natural sciences, engineering, economics and computer science. Imperial is focused on science, engineering, medicine and business, with a research-lab atmosphere and consistently top-ranked engineering and computing departments. LSE is small and specialised, offering unmatched prestige in economics, finance, international relations and the social sciences. UCL is the most comprehensive, leading globally in medicine, education (IOE), architecture (Bartlett), law and neuroscience, with the extra advantage of being in central London.
以近年主流录取要求为参考:牛津多数专业要求A*AA或AAA,IB总分38到40;剑桥典型要求A*AA,部分学院要求数学与进阶数学双A*,IB约41到42;帝国理工工程类普遍要求A*A*A,商科与部分理科为AAA到A*AA;LSE多数专业为AAB到AAA,经济学与金融近年提高到A*AA,并要求数学A*;UCL跨度最大,人文社科低至ABB,计算机与经济学则要求A*AA。
Using recent admission requirements as a reference: Oxford mostly asks for A*AA or AAA with 38 to 40 IB points; Cambridge typically requires A*AA, with some colleges wanting A* in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics and around 41 to 42 IB points; Imperial engineering courses commonly ask A*A*A while business and some science courses sit at AAA to A*AA; LSE ranges from AAB to AAA for most courses, with Economics and Finance raised to A*AA including A* in Mathematics; UCL has the widest spread, from ABB in some humanities to A*AA for Computer Science and Economics. Two iron rules cut across all five schools. First, Economics, Computing, Engineering and Mathematics almost always require A-level Mathematics. Second, if you aim at Cambridge Economics, Imperial Computer Science or any top mathematics course, take Further Mathematics at A-level, because some colleges will not even invite you to interview without it.
MAT ESAT TMUA TSA LNAT
Admissions tests filter out more applicants than any other stage, and each course has its own paper. For mathematics-related courses: Oxford uses MAT for most mathematics and computer science degrees; Cambridge Economics, Cambridge Computer Science and Imperial Economics use TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission), while Imperial Mathematics also uses MAT. For engineering and natural sciences, Cambridge and Imperial have shared ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) since the 2025 entry cycle. For thinking skills, Oxford PPE and Economics and Management sit TSA. Medicine applicants sit UCAT and law applicants sit LNAT at both universities. Remember that BMAT was discontinued after 2024, so ignore old preparation guides. Registration closes around September of the year before entry, the tests run in mid to late October, and scores directly shape who receives an interview.
Oxford and Cambridge interviews run from early to mid December, normally two to three sessions. Oxford is built around the tutorial system: interviewers often start from one problem and drill progressively deeper, testing how you think rather than whether you memorised the right answer. If you get stuck, talking through your reasoning out loud works in your favour. Cambridge interviews are conducted by college academics, and every January there is a winter pool: strong applicants not offered a place by their first college are pooled so that other colleges can pick them up, which is why a Cambridge rejection letter needs to be read with care. Roughly half of Oxford applicants receive an interview, and Cambridge invites a higher share. The most effective preparation is thinking aloud in practice, working through the last five years of past papers, and doing mock interviews with a teacher or a senior student. Imperial and UCL rarely interview except for Medicine, and LSE does not interview at all, deciding purely on grades, tests and the personal statement.
Starting with the 2026 cycle, UCAS has replaced the single free-text personal statement with three structured questions: why you want to study this course, what relevant experience and skills you have, and why you are a good fit for the course and your future study. The total length remains about 4,000 characters (roughly 47 lines), split roughly evenly across the three questions. Whatever the format, the marking logic is unchanged: around 80 percent of the space should carry academic evidence, proving with concrete examples that you have read, thought and practised. For example, write critical notes after reading Economist columns and compare two schools of thought; build a small data-analysis project in Python and explain your method; or take part in contests such as UKMT and AMC and review the mistakes afterwards. Avoid certificate lists and empty generic sentences; every claim needs verifiable evidence. G5 admissions officers read tens of thousands of statements each year, and what sticks is specific, original, honest detail.
For 2027 entry, the whole operation happens during 2026. UCAS registration normally opens in mid-May and submissions start in early September. Oxford, Cambridge and all medicine, veterinary science and dentistry courses close on 15 October at 18:00 UK time, more than two months earlier than everything else. The remaining courses use the equal consideration deadline in late January of the following year as their dividing line. Tests are registered in September and sat in mid to late October; interviews run from early to mid December; Oxford and Cambridge release decisions in January, while Imperial, LSE and UCL mostly send offers on a rolling basis between February and April. A sensible rhythm for applicants: finish your school research and first draft during the summer after AS or Year 12, submit UCAS in the first week of September, then spend all your energy before 15 October on test preparation instead of racing the deadline.
Quantify the competition, but never rely on university-wide averages. Recent undergraduate offer rates are roughly 21 percent at Cambridge, 17 percent at Oxford, 28 percent at Imperial, 12 percent at LSE and 35 percent at UCL, and course-level variation dwarfs these differences. Cambridge Medicine, LSE Economics (regularly more than ten applicants per place), Oxford PPE and Computer Science sit in the hardest tier, while a relatively quiet humanities course inside the same university can be several times easier to enter than a popular computing degree. Your decision should rest on the course, not the institution. Every university publishes an annual admissions report, and UCAS provides course-level statistics, so look up the real applicant and offer numbers for your exact programme before judging where you stand.
Four common mistakes. First, chasing rankings instead of reading the actual curriculum, because the same subject can be taught very differently across the five schools. Second, filling the statement with certificates and memorising interview answers, when G5 interviewers reward people who can genuinely think and converse, and rehearsed lines collapse under follow-up questions. Third, underestimating the tests: MAT, ESAT and TMUA discriminate better than A-level grades themselves, and many 3A* applicants are filtered out at this stage. Fourth, choosing Further Mathematics too late and discovering a subject mismatch in the middle of the application year. The checklist has six steps: confirm your course and college, check subject and grade requirements, register for the right test, polish the personal statement, arrange two mock interviews, and submit strictly on schedule. Underneath everything, the logic of a G5 application never changes: prove with academic evidence that you fit the course, instead of using prizes to prove that you are simply clever.
