This topic is one of the most heavily tested areas in AQA GCSE Biology Paper 1. Whether you sit Foundation or Higher Tier, expect at least one long answer question on enzymes, the circulatory system, or plant transport. The whole chapter follows one logical thread: cells build tissues, tissues build organs, organs build systems, and both animals and plants rely on specialised transport networks to stay alive. There is also a compulsory required practical on food tests: Benedict's solution turns from blue to brick red when heated with reducing sugars, iodine solution turns blue black in the presence of starch, Biuret reagent turns purple with protein, and ethanol emulsifies fats to give a milky white suspension.
1. Levels of Organisation
The exam loves asking you to place structures in this hierarchy. A classic question gives you the stomach or the small intestine and asks which levels of organisation are present. Remember the order and be able to give one example at each level, such as muscle tissue contracting to move food along the gut.
2. Digestion and Enzymes
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up reactions without being used up. Amylase breaks starch into sugars, proteases break proteins into amino acids, and lipase breaks lipids into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile is a common trick answer: it contains no enzymes at all, but it emulsifies fat and neutralises stomach acid, which is why lipase works best in the small intestine rather than the stomach.
3. Factors Affecting Enzyme Action
When you see a temperature graph, remember its shape: the rate rises steadily to an optimum around 37 degrees, then drops sharply as the enzyme denatures. Denaturation is permanent because the active site changes shape, so the substrate can no longer fit. For pH, most enzymes prefer neutral conditions, but pepsin is adapted to the acidic stomach and works best at pH 2.
4. Heart, Blood Vessels and Blood
Blood is made of plasma plus three main cell types. Red blood cells are biconcave discs with no nucleus, packed with haemoglobin that carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. White blood cells defend the body: phagocytes engulf and digest pathogens, while lymphocytes produce antibodies and antitoxins. Platelets help blood to clot at a wound, forming a scab that prevents pathogens from entering. Plasma itself transports carbon dioxide, urea, hormones and digested nutrients around the body.
In a circulation question, trace the path in order: the left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta, around the body, back through the vena cava into the right atrium, then the right ventricle sends deoxygenated blood along the pulmonary artery to the lungs, and oxygenated blood returns through the pulmonary vein to the left atrium. Naming each vessel and stating whether the blood is oxygenated or deoxygenated at each stage is exactly what the mark scheme rewards.
5. Coronary Heart Disease and Risk Factors
治疗方法包括植入支架 stent(撑开血管恢复血流)和服用他汀类药物 statins(降低血液胆固醇水平)。 Coronary arteries supply the heart muscle itself with oxygen. When fatty deposits narrow these arteries, the heart cannot get enough oxygen, causing angina or a heart attack. Stents physically hold the artery open, while statins reduce blood cholesterol over time. You should also be able to compare benign and malignant tumours: benign tumours stay localised, whereas malignant ones invade nearby tissue and spread to form secondary tumours elsewhere.
6. Plant Transport
Remember the contrast: xylem is made of dead cells, moves water and minerals one way, upwards from the roots, and is strengthened by lignin. Phloem is made of living cells and transports sugars and amino acids both ways, from source to sink, in a process called translocation. Questions often ask you to say which tissue carries which substance and in which direction, so learn the difference precisely.
Water first enters the plant through root hair cells, which are long thin extensions of the epidermal cells on the root surface. Their large surface area combined with the higher solute concentration inside the cell compared with the soil solution allows water to move in by osmosis. This is a classic structure and function question, so mention both the increased surface area and the concentration gradient to secure both marks.
7. Transpiration and Stomata
Transpiration is the loss of water vapour from the leaves through stomata, and it drives the transpiration stream that pulls water up the xylem. Four factors increase the rate: brighter light opens stomata, higher temperature speeds up evaporation, lower humidity creates a steeper gradient, and wind removes the water vapour surrounding the leaf. Guard cells control this process by changing shape as they gain or lose water, which is a favourite topic for data and graph questions.
8. Exam Tips and Practice
Describe how the structure of arteries is adapted to their function。 Explain why the rate of transpiration increases on a hot, windy day。 To score full marks on 6-mark questions, structure your answer in clear stages and link structure to function explicitly. For example, when describing the double circulation, trace the blood from the heart to the lungs and back, then to the body and back, naming the vessels and stating whether the blood is oxygenated or deoxygenated at each stage. Command words matter: describe only needs the pattern, but explain demands a mechanism.
When interpreting transpiration graphs, first check the unit on the y axis, usually water loss per unit time, then link the direction of change to stomatal opening or the water vapour gradient. An explanation answer must name a mechanism, such as guard cells closing in dry conditions, rather than merely restating that the rate went down.
By keeping the big picture in mind, remembering the hierarchy of organisation, the roles of the main enzymes, the double circulatory system and the four factors that affect transpiration, you will have covered the highest-yield content in this topic.
