Transport systems are one of the most heavily tested topics in WJEC GCSE Biology. They appear in Unit 1 (Cells, Organ Systems and Ecosystems), covering the circulatory system in humans (1.4) and transport in plants plus transpiration (1.5). Unit 1 is a 1 hour 45 minute written paper worth 45% of the qualification, and questions on labelling the heart, tracing blood flow, comparing blood vessels, or interpreting transpiration experiment data appear almost every year. This guide covers both animal and plant transport in one place.
Why Living Things Need Transport Systems
Single-celled organisms rely on diffusion alone because every cell is close to the outside environment. Multicellular organisms are different: most cells lie far from the surface, so diffusion is far too slow to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the deepest tissues. A transport system solves this by carrying materials in a moving fluid around the body. A classic WJEC question asks you to explain this using surface area to volume ratio: as an organism grows, the ratio falls, diffusion becomes insufficient, and a circulatory system becomes essential.
Double Circulation and the Heart
Humans have a double circulatory system. The pulmonary circulation carries blood from the heart to the lungs for gas exchange, while the systemic circulation delivers oxygenated blood to all the organs of the body. Blood passes through the heart twice on every complete circuit, and this double system keeps blood pressure relatively high so that oxygen and nutrients reach tissues quickly. The heart is made of cardiac muscle that contracts to pump blood, and it receives its own blood supply through the coronary vessels, a fact WJEC often asks about.
Heart structure is a guaranteed labelling question: left and right atria, left and right ventricles, the tricuspid and bicuspid valves, semi-lunar valves, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, aorta and vena cava. Follow the blood: vena cava into the right atrium, right ventricle pumps to the pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein returns to the left atrium, and the left ventricle pumps blood into the aorta. Valves prevent backflow of blood, and you must always state this in your answer.
Arteries, Veins and Capillaries
Arteries carry blood away from the heart. They have thick, elastic walls to withstand the high pressure produced when the ventricles contract, and they usually carry oxygenated blood (except the pulmonary artery). Veins carry blood back to the heart; their walls are thinner, their lumen is larger, and they contain valves to stop blood flowing backwards because pressure is already low. Capillaries are extremely narrow with walls only one cell thick, which allows substances to diffuse rapidly between the blood and the body's cells.
When comparing blood vessels, always link structure to function rather than just naming differences. Capillary walls are one cell thick to shorten the diffusion distance; artery walls are thick and elastic to cope with high pressure; veins have valves because low pressure makes backflow likely. The structure-function sentence pattern earns marks reliably in WJEC mark schemes.
Blood Components
Blood is made of plasma and cells. Plasma is a pale yellow liquid that transports blood cells, digested nutrients, carbon dioxide and hormones. Red blood cells contain haemoglobin and carry oxygen; they have no nucleus and a biconcave disc shape that increases surface area for gas exchange. White blood cells defend the body by engulfing pathogens or producing antibodies. Platelets are small cell fragments that help blood to clot and seal wounds.
How Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Travel
Oxygen is carried mainly by haemoglobin inside red blood cells. In the lungs, where oxygen concentration is high, haemoglobin combines with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin; in the tissues, where the concentration is low, oxyhaemoglobin releases oxygen for respiration. Carbon dioxide is mostly transported dissolved in plasma. This reversible loading and unloading, driven by concentration gradients, is a favourite explain question in WJEC papers.
Xylem, Phloem and Root Hairs
Plants have two transport tissues. Xylem is made of dead cells with thickened walls; it carries water and mineral ions upwards from the roots to the stem and leaves in one direction only. Phloem is made of living cells and transports the sugars made by photosynthesis in the leaves to all parts of the plant, including the roots for storage; this process is called translocation and it can move materials in both directions.
Root hair cells are specialised for absorption: their long, thin extensions massively increase surface area. Water enters by osmosis, while mineral ions such as nitrates are taken up by active transport against a concentration gradient, using energy from respiration. WJEC frequently asks you to distinguish these two mechanisms, so remember: water by osmosis, minerals by active transport.
Transpiration and the Transpiration Stream
Transpiration is the evaporation of water vapour from the leaves through stomata. As water is lost, leaf cells lose water and create a pull that travels down the water column in the xylem to the roots, drawing up fresh water continuously; this full pathway is the transpiration stream. Transpiration matters because it drives the movement of water and minerals through the plant, and evaporation of water helps cool the leaves.
Factors Affecting Transpiration
Four factors control the transpiration rate: bright light opens stomata and speeds it up; higher temperature increases evaporation; higher humidity slows it down because the air is already moist; wind speeds it up by removing water vapour from around the leaf. Each stoma is controlled by two guard cells, which swell and open when they take up water and close when they lose it, regulating both transpiration and gas exchange. Exam questions often give potometer readings and ask you to identify which factor changed and explain why.
WJEC Exam Technique
WJEC transport questions come in four main forms. First, labelling diagrams of the heart or leaf, so practise drawing them from memory. Second, explain questions that need a mechanism, such as why double circulation is efficient or how transpiration pulls water up, where key terms earn the marks. Third, data analysis, where you read trends from tables of heart rate during exercise or potometer results and explain them. Fourth, evaluate questions, such as comparing treatments for cardiovascular disease, where you must give advantages, disadvantages and a conclusion rather than one side only.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Classifying arteries and veins by oxygen content. Vessels are defined by direction of blood flow, not by whether the blood is oxygenated. The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood, and the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood. Always judge by direction.
Mistake 2: Forgetting why valves exist. Heart valves and vein valves both prevent backflow of blood; omitting the phrase "prevent backflow" loses marks in labelling questions. Note that the semi-lunar valves sit at the exits of the arteries, not between the chambers.
Mistake 3: Swapping xylem and phloem. Xylem carries water and minerals upwards; phloem carries sugars in both directions. State both the substance and the direction in your answer to secure both marks.
Mistake 4: Explaining transpiration as just "water is pulled up". The full mechanism is evaporation through stomata creating a pull, with cohesion between water molecules transmitting the pull down the whole column in the xylem. Give all three steps: evaporation, pull and cohesion.
