A-Level
Diagram analysis is one of the most important skills in A-Level Economics. Whether you are dealing with microeconomic supply and demand curves, externalities and market structures, or macroeconomic AD/AS and the production possibility frontier, examiners expect you to draw accurate diagrams, label the key points, and explain in words what each diagram shows. Many students understand the underlying concepts well but lose marks because their diagrams are drawn carelessly. This article systematically reviews the high-frequency diagrams in A-Level Economics: from the supply and demand model to price controls, from taxes and subsidies to externalities, from market structures to macroeconomic diagrams, and finishes with practical techniques for earning full marks when drawing.
1. The Basic Supply and Demand Model
画图时,纵轴标注价格 P(price),横轴标注数量 Q(quantity)。
The supply and demand model is the foundation of all microeconomic diagrams. When drawing it, put price P on the vertical axis and quantity Q on the horizontal axis. The demand curve D slopes downwards from left to right, showing the inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded; the supply curve S slopes upwards from left to right, showing the positive relationship between price and quantity supplied. The point where the two curves cross is the market equilibrium. Remember to label the axes and the curves clearly, because that is the first thing an examiner checks. Even a perfectly drawn shape loses marks if the axes and curves are not labelled.
2. Market Equilibrium
Market equilibrium occurs where the demand curve crosses the supply curve. The corresponding price is the equilibrium price and the corresponding quantity is the equilibrium quantity. At the equilibrium price, quantity demanded equals quantity supplied, and the market clears. If the price is above equilibrium, there is excess supply and sellers compete to push the price down; if the price is below equilibrium, there is excess demand and buyers compete to bid the price up. The price mechanism restores equilibrium through this automatic adjustment. In exams you are often asked to mark the equilibrium point E on the diagram and explain the adjustment process from disequilibrium back to equilibrium.
3. Shifts vs Movements Along the Curve
This is one of the most commonly confused concepts and it is tested every year. A movement along the demand curve occurs only when the price of the good itself changes, shown as a change in quantity demanded, either an extension or a contraction. A shift of the whole curve occurs when a non-price factor changes, such as income, tastes, or the price of substitutes, shown as a change in demand. The same logic applies to supply: changes in costs of production, technology or taxes shift the whole supply curve. When a question asks whether demand or quantity demanded changes, decide which case applies first, and then draw either a movement along the curve or a shift of the whole curve.
4. Price Controls
Government price controls come in two forms: maximum prices and minimum prices. A maximum price, or price ceiling, is set below the equilibrium price, for example rent control; quantity demanded exceeds quantity supplied, creating a shortage shown on the diagram as the gap between the demand and supply curves above the ceiling price, and the government may need rationing. A minimum price, or price floor, is set above equilibrium, for example the minimum wage; quantity supplied exceeds quantity demanded, creating a surplus, such as unemployment in the labour market. When drawing, start with the original equilibrium, then draw the price control line, and finally shade or arrow the shortage or surplus region.
5. Indirect Taxes and Subsidies
An indirect tax shifts the supply curve upwards by the amount of the tax per unit, raising the equilibrium price and reducing the equilibrium quantity. How the burden is shared between consumers and producers depends on the price elasticities of demand and supply: the more inelastic the demand, the larger the share paid by consumers; the more inelastic the supply, the larger the share borne by producers. A subsidy shifts the supply curve downwards by the amount of the subsidy per unit, lowering the equilibrium price and increasing the equilibrium quantity. When drawing, arrow the direction of the shift and label separately the price paid by consumers and the price received by producers.
6. Externalities and Market Failure
Externalities are one of the main causes of market failure. With a negative externality, such as factory pollution, the marginal social cost MSC exceeds the marginal private cost MPC, so the market equilibrium output is greater than the social optimum, creating a welfare loss. With a positive externality, such as education, the marginal social benefit MSB exceeds the marginal private benefit MPB, so the market produces less than the social optimum. When drawing an externality diagram, sketch both the MPC and MSC curves, or the MPB and MSB curves, mark the market equilibrium and the social optimum, and shade the triangle of deadweight loss. Policy responses include Pigouvian taxes, subsidies and regulation.
7. Monopoly and Market Structures
In perfect competition firms are price takers, so the demand curve AR is horizontal and AR equals MR; profit is maximised where MR equals MC, and long-run economic profit is zero. In a monopoly the firm faces a downward-sloping demand curve and the MR curve lies below the AR curve. The monopolist chooses output where MR equals MC, then reads the price off the demand curve, charging a higher price and producing less than a competitive market, while earning supernormal profit. When drawing the monopoly diagram, sketch the D, MR, MC and AC curves, mark the profit-maximising output Qm, shade the rectangle of supernormal profit, and explain that this causes allocative inefficiency.
8. AD/AS Diagrams for Macro 宏观经济 AD/AS 图表
The core diagram of macroeconomics is the AD/AS model. The AD curve shows aggregate demand, made up of consumption C, investment I, government spending G and net exports X minus M, and it slopes downwards; the short-run aggregate supply curve slopes upwards. Expansionary fiscal or monetary policy shifts AD to the right, raising the price level and increasing real output, which can cause demand-pull inflation; rising costs, such as higher oil prices, shift SRAS to the left, causing cost-push inflation, where higher prices and falling output occur together, known as stagflation. Label the price level PL on the vertical axis and real output Y on the horizontal axis, and explain the effect of each change on equilibrium.
9. PPF and Opportunity Cost
The production possibility frontier shows the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce given its resources and technology. The PPF is usually bowed outwards because of increasing marginal opportunity cost; if opportunity cost is constant, the frontier is a straight line. A combination on the frontier means resources are fully employed, a point inside the frontier means unemployment or idle resources, and a point outside is unattainable. Technical progress or capital accumulation shifts the whole PPF outwards, representing economic growth. Exams often ask you to use the PPF to explain opportunity cost, scarcity and growth; draw an outward arrow to show the growth shift.
10. Exam Technique
Drawing the diagram is not the goal; explaining it is where the marks are. First, label every axis, curve and equilibrium point, since missing or wrong labels cost marks directly. Second, use solid lines for the original position and dashed lines or arrows for the new position so the examiner can see the direction of change at a glance. Third, always add a written explanation next to the diagram, saying why the curve shifted and how the new equilibrium forms; a diagram alone usually earns only half the marks. Fourth, when reading the question, decide first whether it needs a micro or macro diagram, and whether the change is a shift or a movement along the curve. Fifth, practise drawing the high-frequency diagrams from memory: supply and demand, price controls, taxes and subsidies, externalities, monopoly, AD/AS and PPF. Timed practice in normal study makes exam performance fast and accurate.
11. Key Bilingual Terms
