📚 GCSE Economics: International Trade Key Points | GCSE
International trade is a core topic in GCSE Economics. It examines why countries trade, the benefits and costs, and the policies governments use to manage imports and exports. Understanding these concepts will help you analyse real‑world trade issues and score highly in your exam.
1. What is International Trade? |
International trade is the exchange of goods and services across national borders. It allows countries to obtain products they cannot produce themselves, or to buy them more cheaply from other nations. Trade is a key driver of economic growth and living standards.
The value of a country’s exports minus its imports gives the balance of trade. A surplus occurs when exports exceed imports; a deficit means imports are greater than exports. Both can affect a country’s currency, employment and overall economic health.
2. Absolute Advantage |
Absolute advantage exists when a country can produce a good using fewer resources than another country. For example, if Brazil can produce coffee with half the labour required by Germany, Brazil has an absolute advantage in coffee.
It makes sense for the country with the absolute advantage to specialise and export that good. However, absolute advantage alone does not fully explain trade patterns – some countries trade even when one is more efficient in everything.
3. Comparative Advantage |
Comparative advantage is the principle that countries should specialise in producing goods where they have the lowest opportunity cost. Even if one country is better at making everything, trade can still benefit both parties if they focus on what they do relatively best.
Imagine two countries: Country A can produce wheat or cloth. The opportunity cost of one unit of wheat is the cloth given up. If Country A has a lower opportunity cost of wheat than Country B, it has a comparative advantage in wheat. Both gain by trading.
- Country A specialises in wheat → exports wheat, imports cloth.
- Country B specialises in cloth → exports cloth, imports wheat.
Comparative advantage is the foundation of modern trade theory and explains why free trade is generally beneficial.
4. Benefits of Free Trade |
Free trade means no government restrictions on the movement of goods and services between countries. It is associated with a number of economic benefits that often appear in GCSE exam questions.
First, free trade increases consumer choice. Shoppers can buy products from all over the world, not just those made at home. Second, it lowers prices because goods are produced where costs are lowest. Competition forces domestic firms to become more efficient.
Third, free trade enables countries to exploit economies of scale by producing for a larger international market. Fourth, it encourages innovation and the spread of new technology. Finally, it can help lift incomes in developing countries by giving them access to rich-country markets.
5. Protectionism |
Protectionism refers to government policies that restrict international trade to protect domestic industries from foreign competition. The main methods include tariffs, quotas, subsidies and non‑tariff barriers. Governments often use protectionism to shield infant industries, preserve jobs or respond to unfair trade practices.
While protectionism may save jobs in the short term, it usually leads to higher prices for consumers, less choice and less incentive for domestic firms to be efficient. It can also provoke retaliation from other countries, reducing exports.
In the exam, you need to be able to evaluate both sides: when might protectionism be justified, and when does it do more harm than good.
6. Tariffs | 关税
A tariff is a tax on imported goods. It is one of the most common forms of protectionism. Tariffs raise the price of imports, making domestically produced goods more competitive. Governments also collect tariff revenue.
For example, if a country imposes a 10% tariff on imported cars, the price of foreign cars rises. Some consumers switch to cheaper domestic models. Domestic car makers may increase output and protect employment. However, consumers face higher prices and less choice.
A tariff diagram is often used to show the impact: the world supply curve shifts upward by the amount of the tariff, raising price, reducing import quantity, and creating a deadweight welfare loss.
7. Quotas | 配额
A quota is a physical limit on the quantity of a good that can be imported over a given period. Unlike a tariff, a quota does not generate government revenue directly (unless import licences are sold), but it restricts supply and pushes up prices.
Quotas guarantee that domestic producers keep a certain share of the market. The higher prices that result benefit domestic firms but harm consumers. Some economists argue quotas are more damaging than tariffs because they rigidly restrict competition.
In recent years, quotas have been used in agricultural trade and in textile agreements. They are also a feature of some trading blocs that wish to control external supply.
8. Other Trade Barriers |
Subsidies are payments from the government to domestic producers. They lower production costs, allowing firms to sell more cheaply at home and abroad. This can give an unfair advantage over foreign competitors who do not receive support.
Non‑tariff barriers include regulations, safety standards, and labelling requirements that make it difficult or expensive for foreign firms to sell in a domestic market. For example, a country may require extensive testing of imported electronics, effectively slowing down imports.
Embargoes are an extreme measure where a government completely bans trade with a specific country, often for political reasons. These have severe economic effects on both sides.
9. Trading Blocs |
A trading bloc is a group of countries that agree to reduce or eliminate trade barriers among themselves. There are different levels of integration. A free trade area eliminates tariffs between members but each country keeps its own external tariffs. A customs union goes further by adopting a common external tariff on non‑members.
A single market allows the free movement of goods, services, capital and labour, as in the European Union. The benefits include greater trade flows, lower costs and increased economic integration. Possible drawbacks are loss of national sovereignty and uneven development within the bloc.
In your exam, be ready to discuss the advantages of being part of a trading bloc and why some voters might oppose membership.
10. The World Trade Organization (WTO) | 世界贸易组织 (WTO)
The World Trade Organization is an international body that promotes free trade by negotiating rules and settling disputes between member countries. It works to lower trade barriers globally and to ensure that trade flows as smoothly and predictably as possible.
The WTO operates on the principle of non‑discrimination: a trade concession granted to one member must be extended to all. It also provides a forum for resolving conflicts, which helps prevent trade wars.
Critics argue that the WTO favours rich countries and can undermine environmental and labour standards. Nevertheless, it plays a central role in the global trading system.
11. Globalisation and Trade |
Globalisation refers to the increasing integration of economies around the world, driven by trade, investment, migration and technology. International trade is both a cause and a consequence of globalisation.
Multinational corporations (MNCs) often set up production in several countries to take advantage of lower costs or proximity to markets. This creates jobs and transfers technology but can also lead to exploitation of workers and environmental damage.
Globalisation has lifted millions out of poverty, especially in East Asia. But it has also caused structural unemployment in some developed countries, where workers struggle to compete with lower‑wage producers abroad.
12. Exchange Rates and International Trade |
Exchange rates have a powerful effect on trade. The exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another. A depreciation means the currency becomes cheaper in foreign exchange markets; an appreciation means it becomes more expensive.
When a country’s currency depreciates, its exports become cheaper for foreign buyers, so export volumes tend to rise. Imports become more expensive, so import volumes fall. This can improve the balance of trade, though the J‑curve effect suggests the short‑run response might be different.
A stronger currency makes imports cheaper, benefiting consumers and firms that rely on imported inputs. But it hurts exporters and domestic industries competing with imports. Central banks sometimes intervene to influence the exchange rate to achieve trade objectives.
Depreciation → Export price ↓, Import price ↑ → (ceteris paribus) trade balance improves
