Transactional Writing is the practical side of the Edexcel GCSE English Language exam, tested in Section B of Component 2. In about 45 minutes you choose one of two prompts and produce a letter, article, speech, review, report or leaflet for a specified audience and purpose. Unlike the imaginative writing task in Component 1, transactional writing is not about inventing a story; it is about communicating clearly and appropriately in real-world situations. Examiners reward candidates who can adapt tone, select the right format and organise ideas for a particular reader. Because the task carries 40 marks, this is the section where top grades are often won or lost.
The question usually names the form you must use, but you still need to know what each one demands. Letters suit formal or personal communication and follow strict conventions of address, salutation and sign-off. Articles target newspaper or magazine readers and need an engaging headline and a clear point of view. Speeches are written to be heard, so they rely on rhythm, direct address and rhetorical devices. Reviews express a balanced personal judgement of a book, film or restaurant, often ending with a recommendation. Reports present facts under headings in a formal, impersonal style. Leaflets use short sentences and eye-catching layout to persuade or inform quickly. Knowing one reliable pattern for each form saves precious minutes in the exam.
Letters are the most frequently tested form, and format errors immediately cost marks. A formal letter opens with your address and the date, followed by the salutation: Dear Mr Smith if you know the name, or Dear Sir or Madam if you do not. The sign-off must match the salutation, so Yours faithfully follows Dear Sir or Madam while Yours sincerely follows a named recipient. Informal letters are simpler, using first names and endings like Best wishes or Lots of love. Whatever the register, the body usually works in three moves: state why you are writing, develop your main points in separate paragraphs, and close by saying what you want the reader to do next.
文章Article:标题、导语与读者视角
文章(article)的得分关键在于像真正的报刊文章。开头要有吸引眼球的标题和一句话导语,直接抛出观点或问题;正文用小标题划分段落,每段围绕一个核心观点,多用事实、例子和数据支撑;语气要鲜明,可以适度使用反问、排比和夸张来增强说服力。结尾通常回扣标题或提出号召,让读者读完后有明确感受。记住:文章不是作文,而是写给大众读者看的观点表达。
A successful article reads like something from a real newspaper or magazine. Start with a punchy headline and a one-sentence introduction that states your angle or poses a question. Divide the body into short paragraphs, ideally with subheadings, each developing a single idea supported by facts, examples or statistics. The tone should be confident and opinionated, using rhetorical questions, lists of three and occasional exaggeration to keep the reader engaged. End by returning to your headline or issuing a call to action so the piece feels complete. The examiner is not looking for an essay; they want a lively piece aimed at a general audience.
演讲稿Speech:让文字开口说话
演讲稿是写给耳朵听的,写作时必须听到自己的声音。开场直接用称呼语打招呼,比如Good morning, fellow students,快速拉近距离;多用第二人称you和we,让听众感觉被点名;修辞手法是提分利器:设问(rhetorical questions)、三连排比(rule of three)、反复(repetition)和对比(contrast)都能增强感染力。段落要短,句子要口语化,必要时加入停顿和语气词。结尾用一句有力的话收束,最好呼应开场。
A speech is written for the ear, so you must hear your own words as you write. Open by addressing the audience directly, with a greeting such as Good morning, fellow students, to build an instant connection. Use the second person throughout: you and we make listeners feel involved. Rhetorical devices are your best friends here, including rhetorical questions, the rule of three, repetition and contrast, all of which add force to the spoken line. Keep paragraphs short and sentences conversational, with pauses signalled by shorter sentences. Close with one powerful statement that echoes your opening, so the speech feels circular and memorable.
A review gives a personal judgement of a book, film, show or restaurant, but the judgement must be supported. Open by naming the subject and your overall stance, then analyse strengths and weaknesses in separate paragraphs, backing every point with specific details from the text or experience. End with a clear verdict and, if appropriate, a star rating. A report is a different animal: it is addressed to an employer or organisation, uses headings and numbered sections, stays factual and impersonal, and usually finishes with recommendations. Mixing the two is a classic mistake, so check the prompt carefully before choosing your structure.
Examiners repeat one piece of advice above all others: before you write, ask who your audience is and what you want them to do after reading. The audience controls your vocabulary and tone, so a letter to the head teacher must be formal while an article for teenagers can be lively and direct. The purpose controls your content: persuading needs arguments and evidence, informing needs clarity and order, advising needs empathy and practical suggestions, and entertaining needs vivid, engaging writing. Circle the words audience and purpose in the question and let them drive every sentence you write; this single habit prevents the most common cause of low marks, which is generic content that could have been written for anyone.
Tone and register are a core part of AO5, the content and organisation mark. Formal register demands standard English: write do not rather than don't, avoid slang and colloquialisms, and keep sentences complete. Informal register allows contractions, phrasal verbs and relaxed phrasing. The biggest risk is register drift, where an otherwise formal letter suddenly slips into slang, or a serious topic is treated with a flippant joke. Decide your register before you start and hold it consistently; if you deliberately add a human touch inside a formal piece, make sure it is a choice rather than an accident, because examiners notice inconsistency immediately.
The transactional writing task is worth 40 marks, split between two assessment objectives. AO5 carries 24 marks for content and organisation: the clarity and persuasiveness of your ideas, your choice of form and register, and the coherence of your paragraphs. AO6 carries 16 marks for technical accuracy: the range of your vocabulary, the variety of your sentence structures, and the accuracy of your spelling and punctuation. In short, AO5 rewards how well you write and AO6 rewards how correctly you write. High-scoring candidates balance both, developing fresh ideas and a fluent structure while still reserving the final minutes to check spelling, tense and punctuation, because those 16 marks often separate a grade 7 from a grade 8.
Structure is the other half of AO5. Open quickly and precisely, stating your stance or scene in one sentence instead of circling around the topic. Link paragraphs with connectives such as however, in addition and as a result so the logic of your argument is visible. Vary your sentences, mixing long and short, and avoid starting every sentence with I. End decisively by summarising your argument, echoing the opening or issuing a call to action; never trail off or introduce a new idea in the final paragraph. A reliable internal pattern is Point, Evidence, Analysis, where each paragraph states an idea, supports it and explains its significance; paragraphs built on this rhythm keep the whole piece tight and easy to follow.
高频失分点与备考策略
常见失分点集中在五处:格式错误(信件没写称呼或落款)、语域混乱、内容空泛(只有观点没有证据)、段落过短或过长、拼写标点错误过多。备考策略建议每周一练:每周限时45分钟写一篇真题,写完对照评分标准自评,重点检查AO6的拼写和标点;考前一个月整理自己的文体模板(六种文体各一页),并背诵高频连接词和修辞句式。写作能力无法速成,但应试框架完全可以提前搭建。
The most common mark-losing errors fall into five groups: format mistakes such as a letter missing its salutation or sign-off, register drift, vague content that states opinions without evidence, paragraphs that are too short or too long, and careless spelling and punctuation. A weekly practice routine works well: write one past-paper task under 45 minutes every week, then mark it against the official criteria, paying special attention to the AO6 component. In the month before the exam, build a one-page template for each of the six forms and memorise a bank of connectives and rhetorical sentence patterns. Writing fluency takes years, but the exam framework can be mastered in weeks, and that framework is what moves your grade. Where possible, read published model answers alongside the examiner commentary, because they show exactly how top candidates handle tone and format, two elements that revision guides often describe but rarely demonstrate.
