什么是MYP个人项目 / What Is the MYP Personal Project
The MYP Personal Project is the capstone of the IB Middle Years Programme, completed independently by every student in Year 5, usually Grade 10. The core idea is self-directed learning: you choose a topic based on your own interest, create a real product or outcome, and write a reflective report. Under the IB guide revised in 2021, the report has a maximum of 1500 words, excluding appendices and the bibliography. The whole project takes roughly 40-50 hours, with about 25 hours carried out during supervised school time.
Why Topic Selection Matters
Topic selection is the most important and most underestimated step of the whole project. Once you commit to a title, your goal setting, action plan, process journal and final reflection all revolve around it. More importantly, the quality of your topic directly affects your scores in Criterion C (Taking Action) and Criterion D (Reflecting): a topic that connects deeply with your interest gives your action genuine momentum and your reflection real substance, while a topic chosen out of convenience tends to stall by the second month. Changing topic mid-way is extremely costly, effectively restarting the entire plan.
Mapping Your Interests and Strengths
Before choosing, do an honest self-assessment instead of searching for topics online. Take a sheet of paper and make three columns: the first lists things you genuinely love, such as basketball, drawing, coding, cooking or video making; the second lists skills you already have, like writing, editing, data analysis or public speaking; the third lists the subjects you perform best in at school. The Personal Project is not scored on how impressive your topic sounds, but on the depth you bring to it, so the first column always comes first.
Where to Find Project Ideas
There are four reliable sources of inspiration. First, combine an interest with a real problem, for example turning a love of basketball into a study of how data analysis can improve shooting accuracy. Second, look at problems in your own community, such as campus waste sorting or the digital divide among elderly residents, and build a public-spirited product or service. Third, start from the Global Contexts and place your personal interest within frameworks like identities and relationships, fairness and development, or scientific and technical innovation. Fourth, browse past Personal Project exhibitions to see what previous students achieved, but borrow ideas rather than copying them.
Four Criteria of a Strong Topic
A strong topic must satisfy four criteria at once. First, it must be specific: studying climate change is far too broad, while building a carbon footprint calculator for middle school students is actionable. Second, it must be achievable within eight months given your current skill level. Third, it must offer a learning stretch: the topic should force you to acquire a new skill rather than repeat what you already know, because Criterion A specifically assesses your investigation and learning process. Fourth, it must lead to a tangible outcome, a product, work or service that can be seen and touched at the end.
Product Goals and Learning Goals
The MYP Personal Project requires you to set two goals at the same time, which is what separates it from an ordinary craft project. The product goal describes the outcome you will create, such as designing and publishing a bird-watching field guide for your campus. The learning goal describes the new knowledge or skill you will master along the way, such as learning to use professional birding apps and ecological recording methods. Both goals must be written in measurable language and tracked continuously in your process journal. Many students write only a product goal, leaving them nothing meaningful to reflect on at the end and losing marks unnecessarily.
Research and Resource Planning
Once the topic and dual goals are fixed, immediately take stock of resources: what materials, tools, equipment and human support does this project need? A video project needs a camera, editing software and interviewees; a science project needs lab equipment and permission to use school facilities. List every resource into four categories: already owned, borrowable, to purchase, and to apply for, then estimate the cost and time of each. If a critical resource turns out to be unavailable, adjust the topic now rather than discovering the problem during execution. Resource planning is an important basis for scoring in Criterion B.
Building a Six-Month Timeline
Divide the eight-month project into six phases. Phase one, weeks one to three, covers topic selection, dual goals and initial research. Phase two, weeks four to six, is for refining the plan, applying for resources and starting skill acquisition. Phase three, weeks seven to fourteen, is the core production period with fixed weekly outputs recorded in the journal. Phase four, weeks fifteen to eighteen, finishes, tests and revises the product. Phase five, weeks nineteen to twenty-one, is reserved for writing the 1500-word report. Phase six, weeks twenty-two to twenty-four, prepares the exhibition and the final reflection. Put a checkpoint at the end of every phase, compare progress against the plan, and adjust the next phase if you fall behind.
过程记录:ATL技能的证据 / The Process Journal: Evidence of ATL Skills
The process journal is the most important evidence in the whole project, and you should write in it at least once a week, noting three things each time: what you did that week, what problems you encountered, and how you solved them. Entries do not need to be neat and may include sketches, photos, screenshots, interview notes and records of failure. Pay special attention to moments when you use the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills: how you searched for information, managed your time, collaborated with others, and reflected on improvements. These records directly support scoring in Criteria B and D, and provide abundant material for the report.
Common Topic Selection Mistakes
There are five common topic selection mistakes. First, the topic is too broad, cramming three fields of knowledge into one title so that each is only touched superficially. Second, following trendy topics, with half the class working on the same theme and leaving no personal stamp. Third, ignoring resource constraints and choosing a topic that needs expensive equipment or outside experts. Fourth, lacking a learning stretch, completing everything with existing skills so that Criterion A has nothing to reward. Fifth, setting vague goals with phrases like understanding more or improving my level that cannot be measured, making it impossible to verify outcomes later. Check your topic against all five points one by one.
Working with Your Supervisor
Your school will assign a supervisor, usually with a meeting scheduled weekly or biweekly. Before each meeting, update your process journal and condense your progress, questions and next-week plan into one page of bullet points. During the meeting, raise concrete questions directly, such as whether your research sources are authoritative enough or whether your testing plan for the product is feasible. Within 24 hours after the meeting, turn the supervisor's advice into an action list and confirm it by email. Proactive, specific and well-prepared communication not only makes the supervisor willing to help, but also builds evidence for criterion B that you act on feedback and improve.
Aligning with Assessment Criteria and Final Checklist
Before final submission, self-check against the four assessment criteria. Criterion A, Investigating: is your research deep, and are your sources diverse and reliable? Criterion B, Planning: are both goals specific and measurable, is the timeline reasonable, and have you recorded feedback and improvements? Criterion C, Taking Action: what is the quality of the final product, and does the process show growing skills? Criterion D, Reflecting: have you evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of the product, explained what you learned, and provided evidence of ATL skills in use? Each criterion is worth 8 marks, giving a total of 32. Tick off every item on this list before you submit.
