AQA GCSE
Exam Overview
AQA GCSE Economics is assessed through two equally weighted papers. Paper 1, How Markets Work, covers demand and supply, price, production and market failure, while Paper 2, How the Economy Works, covers growth, inflation, unemployment, fiscal and monetary policy and international trade. Each paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and is worth 80 marks, with questions ranging from multiple choice to extended 9-mark and 12-mark responses. This guide walks through the whole syllabus in exam order and explains how to answer each question type. The key is understanding models and chains of reasoning, not memorising definitions.
Economic Foundations
Economics begins with scarcity: human wants are unlimited while resources are limited, so every choice involves an opportunity cost, defined as the value of the next best alternative forgone. The four factors of production are land, labour, capital and enterprise. The production possibility frontier shows scarcity and opportunity cost visually: any point on the curve means resources are fully employed, and moving along the curve to produce more of one good requires producing less of the other. Exam questions often ask you to use a PPF diagram to explain opportunity cost, so practise labelling the axes and the curve clearly.
Demand and Supply
The law of demand states that as price rises, quantity demanded falls, giving a downward-sloping demand curve. The single most tested distinction is between a movement along the curve and a shift of the curve: a price change causes a movement, while changes in income, tastes, prices of related goods, population and advertising shift the whole curve. Supply slopes upward, and its position is moved by production costs, technology, taxes, subsidies and weather. When answering, first state whether the curve moves or shifts, then explain why: clarity of structure earns the marks.
Price and Elasticity
Market equilibrium occurs where demand equals supply, with neither shortage nor surplus. Price elasticity of demand measures responsiveness: PED equals the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price. If PED is greater than 1, demand is elastic and a price cut raises total revenue; if it is less than 1, demand is inelastic and a price rise raises total revenue. Data-response questions frequently ask you to calculate PED and interpret the result. Remember the determinants of elasticity: the availability of substitutes, the time period, and whether the good is a necessity or a luxury.
Production, Costs and Profit
Costs are split into fixed costs, which do not change with output, and variable costs, which do. Total revenue equals price times quantity sold, and profit equals total revenue minus total costs. Economies of scale mean average costs fall as output rises, thanks to bulk buying, technical economies, financial advantages, managerial specialisation and marketing economies. Questions often ask you to calculate profit or break-even with given numbers, and to explain why average costs fall as a firm grows. Always pair the formula with the reasoning: showing why economies of scale occur earns more marks than quoting the formula alone.
Market Structures and Market Failure
In a competitive market there are many firms, identical products and free entry, so firms are price takers. A monopoly has a single seller with market power who can raise price above the competitive level. Market failure occurs when markets fail to allocate resources efficiently, and the three main causes are externalities, public goods and information gaps. A negative externality such as pollution means private cost is below social cost, so too much is produced; a positive externality such as education means social benefit exceeds private benefit, so too little is produced. Public goods such as street lighting are non-rival and non-excludable, and the free-rider problem means private markets will not supply them.
Government Intervention
Governments use several tools to correct market failure. Indirect taxes raise the cost of goods with negative externalities, shifting supply left and reducing output; subsidies lower costs for goods with positive externalities and encourage more production. A maximum price set below equilibrium creates a shortage, while a minimum price set above equilibrium creates a surplus, as with agricultural support prices. Other tools include regulation, state provision of public goods, information campaigns and tradable pollution permits. In answers, draw the diagram showing the policy effect, then evaluate: consider administrative costs, black market risks and distorted incentives.
The National Economy
GDP, gross domestic product, measures the total value of final goods and services produced in a country in a year. Economic growth means an increase in GDP, and real growth removes the effect of inflation. The main macroeconomic objectives are stable growth, low inflation of around 2 percent, low unemployment and a stable balance of payments. Inflation is measured by the CPI, the consumer prices index, and has two main causes: demand-pull and cost-push. Unemployment can be cyclical, structural or frictional, and the natural rate consists of structural plus frictional unemployment. Always distinguish nominal from real values in your answers: confusing them is a classic mark-loser.
Fiscal and Monetary Policy
Fiscal policy uses taxation and government spending to influence aggregate demand: expansionary fiscal policy cuts taxes and raises spending to stimulate a recession, while contractionary policy does the reverse. A budget deficit occurs when spending exceeds tax revenue. Monetary policy is set by the Bank of England, which changes the base interest rate to affect borrowing costs: lower rates stimulate consumption and investment, higher rates cool inflation. Supply-side policies raise long-run productivity through education, training, deregulation and infrastructure. When evaluating, mention time lags, crowding out and expectations: for example, expansionary fiscal policy can be weakened if higher government borrowing pushes up interest rates and crowds out private investment.
International Trade and Globalisation
International trade allows countries to specialise in producing goods where they have a comparative advantage, raising total output through exchange. The UK economy is highly open, with exports and imports forming a large share of GDP. Exchange rate changes affect trade: an appreciation makes exports dearer and imports cheaper, which can worsen the trade balance, while a depreciation does the opposite. Globalisation is the accelerating flow of goods, capital, labour and information across borders, driven by multinational corporations. Trade, foreign investment and aid can promote development, but globalisation also raises concerns about inequality and job losses in some industries. Practise explaining gains from trade with comparative advantage, then evaluate globalisation with real-world examples.
Exam Strategy
Command words decide the depth required: define means state the meaning, explain requires reasons, analyse needs effects to be traced, and evaluate demands arguments on both sides plus a judgement. Nine-mark questions typically ask you to explain an economic concept using a diagram or example; twelve-mark questions are evaluation questions worth the most, and a strong structure is: define the key term, draw a diagram, build a chain of reasoning, weigh arguments for and against, then finish with a clear judgement. With 80 marks in 105 minutes, you have roughly 1.3 minutes per mark, so reserve enough time for extended answers. Practise with past papers and mark schemes, and pay special attention to the evaluation bullet points.
Common Mistakes
1. Confusing a movement along the curve with a shift: price changes move, other factors shift. 2. Drawing diagrams without labels: always label the price axis and quantity axis. 3. Mixing up quantity demanded and demand, a frequent conceptual error. 4. Calculating PED but forgetting the percentage signs or the conclusion: after any calculation, interpret what it means. 5. Writing one-sided twelve-mark answers with no counter-argument and no final judgement, which caps the mark at a low band. Fix these by checking every practice answer against the mark scheme and listing the points you missed.
