Set-builder notation is one of the two standard ways to represent sets in IGCSE Mathematics, alongside roster notation. Instead of listing every element, it defines a set using a rule or condition that all members must satisfy. For example, the set of all integers greater than 3 would be written as {x : x > 3 and x ∈ Z}. This notation is compact, precise, and essential for describing infinite sets that cannot be listed. Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics tests set notation in both Paper 1 and Paper 2, and mastering set-builder form is often the first step in solving these questions efficiently. It also connects directly to inequalities, domains of functions, and interval notation studied later.
Before using set-builder notation, you need to be comfortable with basic set symbols. An element is an object inside a set, usually written with a lowercase letter, while sets themselves are named with capital letters such as A, B or S. The symbol ∈ means "is an element of", so 5 ∈ A reads "5 is an element of set A", while ∉ means "is not an element of". The empty set ∅ contains no elements, and the universal set ξ (or U) contains every element under discussion. These symbols appear constantly inside the condition part of set-builder notation. For instance, {x : x ∈ Z and x ≥ 0} describes the set of all non-negative integers, which is exactly the set of natural numbers.
The Edexcel IGCSE syllabus requires you to know both roster notation and set-builder notation. Roster notation lists elements inside curly brackets, such as {2, 4, 6, 8}, which is clear but only practical for finite sets. Set-builder notation defines a set through a condition, such as {x : x is a positive even number and x ≤ 8}, and can represent infinite sets. A common exam question asks you to convert between the two forms. The key idea is that roster notation answers "which elements are in the set?" while set-builder notation answers "what condition must an element satisfy?". For example, the roster set {1, 2, 3, 4} becomes {x : x ∈ Z and 1 ≤ x ≤ 4} in set-builder form. Conversely, {x : x ∈ Z and -2 < x < 2} converts to {-1, 0, 1} in roster form, so always check whether endpoints are included.
四、描述法的标准格式:{x : 条件}
The standard set-builder format has three parts: a variable, a colon, and a condition. It is written as {x : condition}, where x represents a typical element and the condition after the colon filters which elements belong to the set. Some textbooks use a vertical bar instead of a colon, writing {x | condition}, and both versions are accepted in IGCSE exams. The condition can be an equation, an inequality, or a description in words. For example, {x : x² = 4} is the solution set of the equation x² = 4, which equals {2, -2}. When writing conditions, pay attention to "and" versus "or": {x : x > 2 and x < 5} combines conditions through intersection, while {x : x < 2 or x > 5} uses union. These two forms describe completely different sets, so misreading them is a frequent source of exam errors.
Representing the solution set of an inequality is the most common exam application of set-builder notation. After solving an inequality, you express its solution set in set-builder form, which is a regular question in IGCSE papers. For example, solving 3x - 1 > 8 gives x > 3, so the solution set is {x : x > 3}; if the question specifies that x is an integer, you write {x : x ∈ Z and x > 3}. Three details matter when solving: first, when multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number, the inequality sign must be reversed; second, whether an endpoint is included depends on whether the sign is strict (>) or inclusive (≥); third, if no number system is specified, the solution set is assumed to contain all real numbers, so {x : x > 3} is acceptable, though writing {x : x ∈ R and x > 3} is also correct.
Several standard number sets appear throughout IGCSE Mathematics with fixed symbols. N represents the set of natural numbers {0, 1, 2, 3, ...}, Z represents the set of integers {..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...}, and Q represents rational numbers, which are numbers that can be written as a ratio of two integers. In set-builder notation these symbols are embedded directly in the condition. For example, {x : x ∈ Z and x ≥ -1} describes all integers greater than or equal to -1, while {x : x ∈ N and x < 100} describes all natural numbers below 100. The Edexcel specification explicitly states that students must recognise these number set symbols. Note that different textbooks define N slightly differently, but Edexcel IGCSE treats 0 as a natural number by default; exam questions usually clarify the definition when it matters.
区间[a, b]对应{x : x ∈ R 且 a ≤ x ≤ b},区间(a, b)对应{x : x ∈ R 且 a < x < b},方括号表示包含端点,圆括号表示不包含。
In the more advanced parts of IGCSE Mathematics, solution sets can also be written in interval notation, such as [2, 5), which means all real numbers greater than or equal to 2 and less than 5. Converting between set-builder notation and interval notation is a frequent exam point. The interval [a, b] corresponds to {x : x ∈ R and a ≤ x ≤ b}, while (a, b) corresponds to {x : x ∈ R and a < x < b}; square brackets include the endpoint and round brackets exclude it. For example, {x : x ∈ R and x ≥ 3} becomes [3, ∞), where infinity always takes a round bracket because it is not a specific number. If a question asks for an answer "in interval notation", set-builder form alone will not earn full marks, so read the instruction carefully. Knowing both forms lets you cross-check your answers and reduce careless errors.
A ∪ B表示属于A或属于B的所有元素;A ∩ B表示同时属于A和B的元素。 例如A = {x : x ∈ Z 且 x ≥ 0},B = {x : x ∈ Z 且 x ≤ 5},则A ∩ B = {x : x ∈ Z 且 0 ≤ x ≤ 5},而A ∪ B = {x : x ∈ Z}(因为两个条件合起来覆盖了所有整数)。
Union and intersection are the core operations of set theory, written as ∪ and ∩. A ∪ B contains every element that belongs to A or B, while A ∩ B contains only elements that belong to both A and B. In set-builder form, these operations can be embedded directly into the condition. For example, if A = {x : x ∈ Z and x ≥ 0} and B = {x : x ∈ Z and x ≤ 5}, then A ∩ B = {x : x ∈ Z and 0 ≤ x ≤ 5}, while A ∪ B = {x : x ∈ Z}, because the two conditions together cover all integers. A number line is the best visual aid: draw each set's range, then the intersection is the overlapping region and the union is everything covered by either range. This visual approach is fast and reliable in exams.
例如全集U = {x : x ∈ Z},集合A = {x : x ∈ Z 且 x < 0},则A' = {x : x ∈ Z 且 x ≥ 0}。
The complement of a set A, written as A' or Ā and read as "A complement", contains every element of the universal set that is not in A. In set-builder notation, the complement is expressed by adding an exclusion condition with "and". For example, if the universal set is U = {x : x ∈ Z} and A = {x : x ∈ Z and x < 0}, then A' = {x : x ∈ Z and x ≥ 0}. A complement always exists relative to a specific universal set: change the universal set and the complement changes too. A common exam trap is ignoring the stated universal set. If a question says U = {1, 2, 3, ..., 20}, then the elements of A' must be chosen from 1 to 20 only, never outside that range. Circling the universal set's range before finding complements is a simple way to avoid this mistake.
Set-builder notation appears not only in pure symbol questions but also in practical word problems. For example: "In a class, 25 students like mathematics, 18 like science, and 8 like both. How many students like at least one subject?" This type of question is solved with a Venn diagram together with set notation. Let the universal set U be all students in the class, M the students who like mathematics, and S the students who like science. Then the number liking at least one subject is |M ∪ S| = |M| + |S| - |M ∩ S| = 25 + 18 - 8 = 35. The value of set-builder notation here is that it converts wordy conditions into precise set expressions, removing ambiguity from the problem. Venn diagram questions typically carry 4 to 6 marks in IGCSE papers, and writing down the set expression before substituting numbers is the key step to secure those marks.
Four mistakes account for most lost marks in set-builder questions. First, confusing "and" with "or": {x : x > 2 and x < 5} is an intersection while {x : x < 2 or x > 5} is a union, and confusing the two completely changes the set. Second, endpoint errors: x > 3 and x ≥ 3 describe different sets because the first excludes 3 while the second includes it; on a number line, use an open circle for strict inequalities and a filled circle for inclusive ones. Third, forgetting the number system: when a question asks for integer solutions, the answer must be written as {x : x ∈ Z and ...}; writing only {x : x > 3} loses the integer restriction and earns partial marks at best. Fourth, finding complements without checking the universal set. After finishing any set question, quickly verify the result using a number line or roster form, which is the cheapest way to catch errors.
