CIE IGCSE
Sociology studies how society works, how groups interact and how individuals are shaped, making it one of the most thinking-intensive humanities subjects at IGCSE. This guide follows the CIE syllabus through the four key perspectives, research methods, family and education, crime and media, and closes with high-scoring exam strategies for Papers 1 and 2.
Course Overview: Two Papers and Assessment
CIE IGCSE Sociology (0495) is aimed at students aged 14-16 and is assessed through two papers. Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and carries 50 marks, worth 50% of the total; it covers theory and methods plus culture, identity and socialisation, and all questions are compulsory. Paper 2 lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and carries 70 marks, worth 50%: social inequality is compulsory, and candidates choose two options from family, education, crime and deviance, and media. Question types progress from definitions and descriptions to explanations and 8-mark evaluate questions, testing a complete skill chain from recall to critical analysis.
Theory and Methods: Four Perspectives
The syllabus requires command of four sociological perspectives. Functionalism, developed by Durkheim and Parsons, sees society as an organic whole of interdependent parts that work together to maintain order and stability. Marxism holds that society is driven by class conflict, with the capitalist class using institutions such as education and the media to maintain domination. Feminism focuses on gender inequality and criticises the gendered division of labour in the family and in education. Interactionism takes a micro-level approach, studying how people construct meaning in everyday interaction through processes such as labelling. Evaluate questions often ask you to compare perspectives on the same issue, so for each theory you need the core arguments, key sociologists and limitations.
Research Methods: Questionnaires, Interviews and Observation
Research methods carry heavy weight in Paper 1. Questionnaires collect standardised data from large samples; they are quick and easy to quantify but suffer from low response rates and limited answer depth. Interviews, structured or unstructured, yield rich in-depth data but use small samples and take time. Observation, participant or non-participant, reveals real behaviour yet raises ethical issues and researcher bias. You should also master the four sampling techniques (random, stratified, quota, opportunity), the distinction between reliability and validity, and the strengths and limitations of secondary data such as official statistics. In answers, define the method first, then list advantages and disadvantages, and support each point with concrete examples.
Culture, Identity and Socialisation
Socialisation is the process through which individuals learn the norms, values and roles of society and form their identity. Primary socialisation takes place in the family, where parents and close relatives teach children language, basic norms and moral ideas. Secondary socialisation occurs in school, peer groups, the media and the workplace, shaping identities linked to age, gender and occupation. Norms are rules of behaviour in specific situations, while values are more abstract beliefs such as equality and success. Exams frequently test types of culture (high culture, popular culture, consumer culture, global culture) and the concept of subculture. Keep culture and identity as separate requirements, and use everyday examples to earn easy marks.
Social Inequality: Class, Gender and Ethnicity
Social inequality refers to the unequal distribution of resources, power and status among groups, and it is a compulsory topic in Paper 2. The main dimensions are social class, gender, ethnicity and age. British society is often divided by occupation into upper, middle and working classes, and social mobility reflects the chance of moving upwards. Gender inequality appears as the pay gap, occupational segregation and the division of domestic labour. Ethnic inequality shows up in differences in employment, housing and educational opportunities. The distinction between absolute and relative poverty and the concept of life chances are also high-frequency exam points. Always support arguments with statistics and case studies, and link the topic back to education and the family.
The Family: Functions, Diversity and Change
The family is the most classic field of sociological study. Functionalists argue that the family performs five functions: reproduction, economic support, emotional care, primary socialisation and status conferral, and Parsons called it the basic unit of society. Family forms in modern society are increasingly diverse: lone-parent families, reconstituted families, same-sex families, childless couples and transnational families coexist. The UK divorce rate rose sharply from the 1970s, driven by divorce law reform, women's economic independence, secularisation and the transfer of family functions to outside institutions. Exams often ask you to evaluate functionalist views or to analyse the family from perspectives such as functionalism, Marxism and feminism, so match each perspective to the specific functions or power relations it highlights.
Education: Roles and Achievement Gaps
The sociology of education focuses on the role of schools and differences in achievement. Functionalists see school as a mechanism for selecting talent, promoting social solidarity and meritocracy. Marxists Bowles and Gintis proposed the correspondence principle, arguing that school rules mirror workplace structures and reproduce class inequality. Feminists note that gender gaps in achievement have narrowed sharply, yet subject choice still reflects gender stereotypes. Research on achievement gaps concentrates on social class, gender and ethnicity: middle-class students generally achieve more, explained by cultural capital, parental expectations and school resources. In answers, always distinguish internal factors (school, teacher expectations, peer groups) from external factors (family, culture, economic circumstances).
Crime, Deviance and Social Control
Crime refers to behaviour that breaks formal law, while deviance means behaviour that violates social norms, and the two do not always overlap. Official crime statistics are a key source of data but conceal a dark figure of crime, the many offences that go unreported or unrecorded. Theories of crime include anomie, which argues that deviance results when socially approved goals are separated from legitimate means; labelling theory, which holds that being branded a deviant reinforces a deviant identity; and Marxist analyses of white-collar and corporate crime. Social control is divided into formal control (police, courts) and informal control (family, peers, public opinion). Exams often ask for the distinction, and may ask you to evaluate explanations for lower female crime rates.
Media: Representation, Effects and New Media
Media studies covers four layers: ownership and control, representation, effects and new media. In terms of ownership, a few large conglomerates control most newspapers and television, and critics worry that media moguls shape public opinion. Representation research examines how the media portray women, ethnic minorities and young people; women, for example, are often stereotyped as homemakers or consumers. Three classic effect theories dominate: the hypodermic syringe model sees audiences as passive receivers; uses and gratifications emphasises active audience choice; cultivation theory argues that heavy television viewing shapes perceptions of the world. New media such as the internet and social media have transformed how information is produced and spread, raising questions of misinformation and privacy, and they are a growing exam focus.
Exam Technique and Common Mistakes
High-scoring answers follow three steps. First, read the command words: define asks for a definition, describe for a description, explain for reasons, and evaluate for strengths and limitations plus a judgement. Second, use a point-evidence-evaluation structure for 8-mark evaluate questions: state the theoretical view, support it with research or case studies, then note limitations and give your own conclusion. Third, manage time; allow about 15 minutes for each evaluate question in Paper 1. Common mistakes include listing points without analysis, confusing theories with methods, forgetting sociologists' names, ignoring the evaluate command and using vague examples. Complete at least three past papers before the exam and mark them against the official mark scheme.
