The Reactivity Series at a Glance
The reactivity series is one of the most important topics in Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry, appearing in almost every exam paper. It lists metals in order of chemical activity, from most to least reactive: potassium, sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, carbon, zinc, iron, hydrogen, copper, silver and gold. A metal higher in the series loses electrons more easily and reacts more vigorously, while a metal lower down is more stable and less willing to react. The key to mastering this list is not memorising it blindly but understanding the central idea that a more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from its compounds. Once you connect this idea to reactions with oxygen, water and acids, the whole topic becomes logical and easy to recall.
Reactions with Oxygen
Reactions with oxygen give the most visible evidence of a metal's reactivity. Potassium and sodium tarnish within seconds in air and are stored under oil; a magnesium ribbon burns with a blinding white flame to form white magnesium oxide powder; iron burns only in pure oxygen with bright sparks to form black iron(II,III) oxide, and rusts slowly in damp air; copper turns black when heated because copper(II) oxide forms on its surface; silver and gold barely react with oxygen at all. Exam answers often require balanced equations such as 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO, so remember to balance them and to state the conditions, such as burning or heating, which examiners mark separately.
Displacement Involving Metal Oxides
The classic experiment on page 367 mixes grey magnesium powder with black copper(II) oxide and heats the mixture. The reaction is strongly exothermic, giving out heat and light, and the products are white magnesium oxide and reddish-brown copper. This is a displacement reaction: magnesium is more reactive than copper, so it takes the oxygen away from copper(II) oxide. The equation is Mg + CuO → MgO + Cu. Magnesium gains oxygen and is oxidised, while copper(II) oxide loses oxygen and is reduced. When you describe the observations, mention the heat released, the bright light, and the reddish-brown copper left behind. The same pattern works with zinc and iron oxide, and the only rule you need is that a metal higher in the series displaces a metal lower down.
Oxidation and Reduction: Oxygen Transfer
Within the inorganic chemistry unit, oxidation and reduction are first defined in terms of oxygen. Oxidation is the gain of oxygen, and reduction is the loss of oxygen. In the reaction between magnesium and copper(II) oxide, magnesium gains oxygen and is oxidised, while copper(II) oxide loses oxygen and is reduced. The two processes always happen together, which is why these reactions are called redox reactions. A useful phrase to remember is that gain of oxygen is oxidation and loss of oxygen is reduction. Note that oxidation does not require oxygen gas itself; any substance that gains oxygen has been oxidised. Exam questions often ask whether a substance has been oxidised or reduced, so look carefully at whether it gains or loses oxygen before you answer.
OIL RIG:电子视角看氧化还原 / OIL RIG: The Electron View
英文口诀OIL RIG可以帮助记忆:Oxidation Is Loss(氧化即失电子),Reduction Is Gain(还原即得电子)。
At the electron level, the definitions are upgraded: oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is the gain of electrons. The English mnemonic OIL RIG helps you remember this: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain. The reactivity series is really a ranking of how easily metals lose electrons: potassium loses electrons most easily, so it is the most reactive and the strongest reducing agent, while gold loses electrons with great difficulty and is very stable. An oxidising agent accepts electrons and is itself reduced; a reducing agent donates electrons and is itself oxidised. A common exam question asks you to identify the oxidising and reducing agents in a reaction. Look for which substance loses electrons, that is the reducing agent, and which gains electrons, that is the oxidising agent. They always appear together.
Displacement in Salt Solutions
If you drop an iron nail into blue copper(II) sulfate solution, reddish-brown copper deposits on the nail and the blue solution slowly turns pale green as iron(II) sulfate forms. The equation is Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu. This is a displacement reaction in solution: the more reactive metal pushes the less reactive metal out of its salt solution. Whether a reaction happens depends only on the reactivity series: zinc displaces copper and iron displaces copper, but copper cannot displace zinc. Soluble salts such as nitrates, sulfates and chlorides all take part in these reactions, but the added metal must be more reactive than the metal in the salt, and the salt must dissolve in water. When describing observations, be specific: colour changes of solids, colour changes of solutions, and any bubbles are all marks on the mark scheme.
Reactions with Water and Steam
Metals above hydrogen in the reactivity series react with water or steam to produce hydrogen. Potassium, sodium, lithium and calcium react vigorously with cold water, giving a metal hydroxide and hydrogen, for example 2Na + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2; sodium skates on the water, fizzes and may catch fire. Magnesium reacts very slowly with cold water but reacts with steam to form magnesium oxide and hydrogen: Mg + H2O → MgO + H2. Zinc and iron react only with steam at high temperature, for example 3Fe + 4H2O → Fe3O4 + 4H2. Exams often show the apparatus: wet mineral wool provides the steam and the metal is heated in a tube, with the hydrogen collected over water. You should be able to name each part of the apparatus and explain why the gas is collected this way.
Reactions with Dilute Acids
Metals above hydrogen react with dilute hydrochloric acid or dilute sulfuric acid to give a salt and hydrogen. Zinc and dilute sulfuric acid give Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2; iron and dilute hydrochloric acid give Fe + 2HCl → FeCl2 + H2. Magnesium reacts fastest, producing bubbles rapidly, aluminium more slowly, and copper, silver and gold do not react with dilute acids at all. Again the reactivity series decides: any metal below hydrogen cannot react with dilute acid. Watch the details: iron forms iron(II) salts and the solution is pale green; aluminium has a protective oxide layer so it starts slowly; hydrogen is tested by holding a lighted splint to the tube, which gives a squeaky pop. In practical questions, write observations such as bubbles of gas being produced and the metal dissolving gradually.
Extracting Metals: Carbon Reduction and Electrolysis
The method used to extract a metal depends on its position in the reactivity series. Carbon can act as a reducing agent for metals below it in the series, removing oxygen from their oxides, as in the extraction of zinc and iron; the blast furnace for iron is the industrial example: Fe2O3 + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO2. Metals above carbon, from potassium to aluminium, form oxides that are too stable for carbon reduction, so they are extracted by electrolysis of their molten compounds, for example molten aluminium oxide, with cryolite added to lower the melting point: 2Al2O3 → 4Al + 3O2. Very unreactive metals such as gold and silver are found native in the ground and simply mined. A favourite exam question asks you to choose a method of extraction and justify it, and your reason must refer to the metal's position relative to carbon.
Common Mistakes and Exam Tips
The first common mistake is mixing up the two definitions of oxidation and reduction: if the question talks about oxygen, answer in terms of oxygen; if it talks about electrons, use OIL RIG. Read the question first. The second mistake is thinking copper reacts with dilute acid. Copper sits below hydrogen and does not react, although it does react with concentrated sulfuric acid, which is beyond the IGCSE syllabus. The third is forgetting aluminium's oxide layer when explaining why it seems unreactive. The fourth is losing marks on balancing equations and state symbols in displacement questions. As for technique: whenever you see a metal added to a salt solution, compare their positions in the series; describe observations in three groups, solid, solution and gas; and check whether state symbols are required. Finally, write out the series from memory three times before the exam so that the order of potassium, sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, carbon, zinc, iron, hydrogen, copper, silver and gold is perfect.
Summary and Revision Action Plan
The reactivity series is the thread that runs through Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry, linking reaction observations to industrial extraction. Revise it in three steps. First, write out the series from memory and mark the positions of carbon and hydrogen. Second, build your own comparison notes for the three reaction types, with oxygen, water and acids, recording observations, equations and conditions side by side. Third, work through past papers, focusing on displacement judgements, identifying oxidising and reducing agents, and describing experimental observations. For every wrong answer, trace the mistake back to the series rather than memorising the answer in isolation. If you connect this chapter to salt preparation and metal extraction later in the book, you will see that all of inorganic chemistry is really one big table.
