Edexcel IGCSE
This article covers every core skill you need for Combined Events on the Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics (4MA1) syllabus. You will learn the multiplication rule for independent events, the addition rule for mutually exclusive events, tree diagrams, sample space diagrams, the at-least-one technique, and conditional probability. Each section pairs a clear explanation in Chinese with the key English exam terminology, so you can both understand the method and follow the wording of the real questions.
What Are Combined Events?
A combined event is a scenario built from two or more simple events, such as rolling a die and then tossing a coin, or drawing two marbles from a bag in succession. On the Edexcel IGCSE paper these appear in three common forms: two independent experiments performed one after another, the same experiment repeated twice, and sampling without replacement. Before you touch any formula, decide whether the events are independent or mutually exclusive, because that choice determines which rule applies.
Independent Events and the Multiplication Rule
P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B)。
Two events are independent when the outcome of one has no effect on the probability of the other. For example, rolling a 6 on the first die and rolling a 6 on the second die are independent, because the first roll does not change the second roll. The multiplication rule states that P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B) when A and B are independent. If the probability of rolling a 6 on a fair die is 1/6, then the probability of rolling two 6s in a row is 1/6 × 1/6 = 1/36. This rule only works for independent events, and misapplying it is one of the most common errors in the exam.
Mutually Exclusive Events and the Addition Rule
P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B)。 P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)。
Mutually exclusive events cannot happen at the same time. For example, rolling an odd number and rolling a 4 on the same die are mutually exclusive, because a single result cannot be both. When two events are mutually exclusive, the addition rule says P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B). The probability of rolling a 3 or a 4 is 1/6 + 1/6 = 1/3. When the events can overlap, the rule becomes P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B), and subtracting the overlap stops you counting the shared outcomes twice.
Tree Diagrams for Two-Stage Experiments
A tree diagram is the most visual tool for combined events. Draw the first stage on the left and the second stage on the right, writing each probability on its branch. The probability of reaching any leaf is the product of the probabilities along its path, and the branch probabilities at every fork must sum to 1. Tree diagrams are ideal for two-stage questions such as rolling twice, drawing with replacement, or drawing without replacement. In the Edexcel mark scheme, method marks are awarded for writing the product expression, so always show the multiplication step before simplifying.
Sampling Without Replacement
Sampling without replacement is a favourite Edexcel question type. Suppose a bag contains 5 red and 3 blue marbles, and two marbles are drawn without replacement. The probability that the first marble is red is 5/8. Because the first marble is not returned, only 7 marbles remain and 4 of them are red, so the probability that the second marble is red is 4/7. The probability that both are red is therefore 5/8 × 4/7 = 20/56 = 5/14. The key feature of without-replacement sampling is that the denominator always drops by 1 on the second draw, while the numerator depends on the first outcome. On a tree diagram, every second-stage branch must be recalculated using the first-stage result.
Sample Space Diagrams and Tables
The sample space is the set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. When an experiment involves two variables, a table is the fastest way to list every outcome. For two dice, let the rows represent the first die and the columns represent the second die, giving 36 cells in total. From the table you can count directly that a sum of 7 has 6 combinations while a sum of 12 has only 1, and then convert those counts into probabilities. Edexcel questions on products of two dice or combinations of two coins are simply table-counting exercises; as long as the table is complete and the counting is careful, these marks are essentially free.
Probability of At Least One
At-least-one questions are the classic trick of the Combined Events topic. For example, find the probability of getting at least one head when a coin is tossed four times. Listing every outcome that contains a head is tedious, but the complement is simple: at least one head fails only when every toss is a tail. So P(at least one) = 1 - P(all tails) = 1 - (1/2)^4 = 1 - 1/16 = 15/16. This complement rule, subtracting the all-fail probability from 1, works for nearly every at-least-one question on the paper, and the Edexcel mark scheme explicitly accepts it.
Conditional Probability and Venn Diagrams
P(B | A) = P(A and B) / P(A)。
Conditional probability asks how the chance of one event changes when another event is known to have happened. It is written P(B | A), read as the probability of B given A, and calculated as P(B | A) = P(A and B) / P(A). Venn diagrams make this idea concrete: draw the universal set as a rectangle and two events as overlapping circles, with the count of each region written inside. For a question such as given that a student is a boy, find the probability that he studies Physics, the denominator must be the number of boys, not the whole class. Choosing the wrong denominator is the single most common error in conditional probability questions.
Common Mistakes and Marking Points
According to Edexcel examiner reports, four mistakes dominate Combined Events questions. First, students swap the addition and multiplication rules by confusing mutually exclusive with independent events. Second, in without-replacement questions they forget to update the second probability. Third, they solve at-least-one problems by listing outcomes instead of using the complement, which wastes time and invites missed cases. Fourth, they use the wrong denominator in conditional probability, taking the whole class instead of the given condition. The good news is that Edexcel is generous with method marks: writing the correct product or sum earns credit even if the final simplification is wrong, so always show your working in full.
Past Paper Practice Plan
To secure full marks on Combined Events, follow this three-step plan. First, collect every probability question from Edexcel IGCSE past papers since 2019 and sort them by type: multiplication rule, addition rule, tree diagrams, and conditional probability, aiming for at least five questions per type. Second, write out the full working for every question: identify the event types, state the formula, substitute the numbers, simplify, and give the final answer, then check the mark scheme to see how many method marks you earned. Third, keep an error log that records the mistake category for each wrong question, and redo the whole log in the week before the exam. With two weeks of this routine, most students stabilise above ninety percent accuracy.
