Source analysis is one of the highest-value and most discriminating question types in the GCSE History exam. Whatever board you sit, whether AQA, Edexcel or OCR, source questions run through both Paper 1 and Paper 2 and typically account for more than 40 percent of the total marks. This guide breaks down the core method: identifying source types, establishing provenance, evaluating value and limitations, and structuring your answer.
What Is Source Analysis?
Source analysis asks candidates to read a historical source within a limited time and to complete four stages: understand, judge, evaluate and answer. The common source questions in GCSE History include description questions that explain what a source shows, evaluation questions that judge how reliable a source is, and comparison questions that identify similarities and differences between two sources. Understanding the command words, such as describe, explain and evaluate, is the first step to scoring, because each command word demands a different depth of response. For example, a describe question only needs a summary of the content, an explain question requires you to link the source to its historical background, and an evaluate question asks for an overall judgement of reliability and value. Reading the command word carefully before writing is the key to staying on target.
The Four Source Types
The sources used in GCSE exams fall into four main types. Written sources include diaries, letters, newspaper articles and government documents. Visual sources include photographs, posters and cartoons. Statistical sources include tables of data and census returns. Material sources include artefacts and buildings. Each type has its own strengths and limitations: government documents carry authority but may conceal unfavourable information, while newspaper cartoons are vivid but carry a strong point of view.
三、OPCVL方法的五个步骤 | Five Steps of the OPCVL Method
OPCVL是史料分析最经典的五步框架,分别对应Origin(来源)、Purpose(目的)、Content(内容)、Value(价值)和Limitations(局限)。
OPCVL is the classic five-step framework for source analysis, covering Origin, Purpose, Content, Value and Limitations. Step O: establish when the source was created, who wrote it and where it was published. Step P: consider why the author produced the source and who the intended audience was. Step C: summarise what the source actually says. Step V: judge how valuable the source is for answering the question, using contextual knowledge. Step L: identify what the source fails to tell us. Moving through the five steps in order captures nearly all of the marking points on evaluation questions.
Establishing Origin: Author, Date and Audience
Establishing provenance is the foundation of judging reliability. When you meet any source, first circle three elements: who wrote it, when it was written and who the audience was. An account written by a witness at the time has a different value from a memoir written decades later. A wartime propaganda poster has a different purpose from a reflective article written after the war. Placing the source back into its historical context lets you decide whether it records what people really believed at the time or offers a later reinterpretation.
Analysing Purpose: Propaganda, Bias and Perspective
The difficult part of source analysis is spotting the author's purpose and bias. Official government documents may present a selective picture in order to shape public image. Newspaper editorials represent a particular political standpoint, and cartoons and posters are natural propaganda tools. In your answer, do not simply label the source as biased; explain specifically what purpose the author served, what techniques were used and which audience was being influenced. This level of analysis earns the top marks on evaluation questions.
Evaluating Value and Limitations
Value and limitations are the most common marking points on source questions. When judging value, link the source back to the question being asked: is this source valuable for answering how economic policy affected workers' lives? Is it valuable for how the government promoted the war? The same source can be valuable for one question and nearly useless for another. Common limitations include faded memory over time, one-sided authorship, partial information and a lack of supporting data. Remember one rule: value and limitations must be tied to the specific question; vague generalisations earn no marks. In AQA, for example, source evaluation is marked in levels: Level 1 simply paraphrases the source, Level 2 adds a basic judgement linked to provenance, Level 3 evaluates value using contextual knowledge, and Level 4 discusses value and limitations together with a balanced overall judgement. Knowing what each level requires helps you structure your answer deliberately.
Cross-Referencing: Agreement and Disagreement
When a question provides two or more sources, corroboration becomes the central skill. Summarise each source separately, then compare where they agree and where they diverge. If two sources support each other, the fact is more reliable. If they contradict each other, analyse why: different perspectives, different dates or opposing viewpoints. Comparison questions usually require both similarities and differences; writing only one side loses marks.
八、答题结构:PEEL段落模板 | Answer Structure: The PEEL Paragraph
High-scoring answers need a clear structure, and the PEEL template is the most practical paragraph framework. Point: state your view and answer the question directly. Evidence: quote specific content or details from the source. Explain: show how the source supports your point and connect it to your own contextual knowledge. Link: tie the paragraph back to the overall question. One argument per paragraph, moving forward step by step, avoids the wall-of-text answer that examiners penalise. For example, if the question asks how valuable the source is for studying civilian life in wartime Britain, your Point should answer directly that the value is high but limited, the Evidence should quote rationing details from the source, the second Explain should connect these to what you know about the rationing system, and the Link should return to the question itself. Do not skip any of the four steps.
Four Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them
Examiner reports repeatedly identify four weaknesses. First, paraphrasing the source without analysis: rewriting the text without any judgement. Second, ignoring provenance: answering without any mention of author, date or context. Third, discussing the source in general terms instead of answering the actual question. Fourth, dumping memorised background knowledge without connecting it to the source. The remedy is simple: before each paragraph, look back at the question and ask yourself whether you are answering it.
Exam Board Differences: AQA, Edexcel and OCR
The exam boards set source questions in different styles. AQA Paper 2 favours an explain-and-evaluate chain and often links sources to specific events. Edexcel emphasises deep analysis of provenance and intent, and regularly includes statistical sources. OCR tends to focus on comparison and synthesis across sources. Start with past papers from your own board to learn its question style and marking emphasis, then use other boards' papers as extension practice.
A Four-Week Practice Plan
Here is an executable four-week plan. Week one: complete one source question each day, practising the OPCVL framework in full, prioritising completeness over speed. Week two: finish the source sections of two full past papers, strictly timed. Week three: mark your own answers against the mark scheme line by line and identify where marks were lost. Week four: redo the questions you got wrong and build a personal checklist of common errors. Four weeks of this routine will raise your consistent score on source questions noticeably.
