WJEC is the main examination board in Wales, and it offers French at GCSE and IGCSE level with a strongly skill-based design. The whole course is not divided by grammar topics but by the four language skills, producing four separate papers that are marked independently. The advantage is a very clear revision path: if listening is weak you focus on listening, and if writing is strong you can secure marks reliably, because one bad question does not drag down the whole paper. The course also emphasises authentic contexts, so the listening recordings, reading texts and speaking tasks all reflect real life in France and other French-speaking countries, from ordering food and asking for directions to planning holidays; what you practise is not just grammar rules but the complete ability to solve problems with the language.
二、四张试卷各占25%:听说读写的考核方式 / Four Papers at 25 Percent Each: How the Four Skills Are Assessed
All four WJEC French papers carry exactly the same weighting, 25 percent each, so no skill can be abandoned. The listening paper tests the ability to understand spoken French through multiple-choice questions, gap fills, true or false items and short answers; the speaking paper is the only assessment completed face to face and usually contains a role-play, a picture-based task and a theme discussion; the reading paper tests comprehension of written French across a wide range of texts from adverts and emails to magazine interviews; and the writing paper asks candidates to produce French themselves, from filling in forms and writing short sentences to completing an extended essay. Because the papers are independent, a low score in one cannot be rescued by another, so revision must advance on all four fronts together.
三、听力试卷:题型分布与精听训练法 / The Listening Paper: Question Types and Intensive Listening Practice
The WJEC listening paper covers high-frequency everyday situations such as self-introduction, family, school, shopping and travel. Questions usually fall into three groups: information retrieval, where you pull concrete facts such as times, prices and names out of a dialogue or monologue; opinion tasks, where you must judge the speaker's attitude, whether they approve or object, like or dislike; and spelling tasks, where you write down words or short phrases accurately, often numbers, dates and simple vocabulary. The core revision method is intensive listening: listen once for the general idea, then pause sentence by sentence until every word is clear, and finally compare with the transcript to find what you misheard. Three sessions of fifteen minutes per week for two months will noticeably sharpen your sound discrimination. In the exam, read the questions before the audio starts and listen with a purpose; the accuracy difference is enormous.
四、口语试卷:角色扮演、图片任务与主题讨论 / The Speaking Paper: Role-Play, Photo Cards and Theme Discussion
The speaking paper is the part most students fear, but the WJEC marking criteria are actually quite friendly: examiners reward successful communication rather than a perfect accent. The test usually has three sections. The role-play sets a scenario such as buying a train ticket or booking a dentist appointment and asks you to communicate given information, where the key is accuracy with numbers, dates and polite expressions. The photo task gives a picture to describe first and then leads into examiner questions about the theme. The conversation develops around syllabus themes, and the examiner follows up on your answers to see whether you can extend a topic using different tenses. The revision secret is to prepare outlines of high-frequency questions rather than memorised scripts, because memorisation becomes obvious and triggers more follow-up questions; recording two minutes of French self-talk daily on your phone and replaying it to correct pronunciation brings rapid improvement.
五、阅读试卷:长文理解、推断与细节定位 / The Reading Paper: Long Texts, Inference and Detail Location
Reading texts mirror real life, with typical examples including text messages and emails, restaurant menus, travel brochures, celebrity interviews and short news reports. Questions progress in difficulty: detail-location items first, where the answer appears directly in the text and the skill is scanning; then gist questions requiring a summary of the main idea of a paragraph; finally inference questions that demand reading between the lines, for example noticing that a writer speaks about a topic in a negative tone and therefore opposes it. Unknown vocabulary is the biggest obstacle in French reading, but the exam never requires you to know every word. When you meet an unfamiliar verb, look at its ending to identify the tense; when you meet an unknown noun, use the surrounding context to guess its general category. In daily practice, highlight the topic sentence of each paragraph and train yourself to skim a short text in two minutes and state its gist; speed and accuracy improve together.
六、写作试卷:从短句到长作文的进阶 / The Writing Paper: Progressing from Short Sentences to Extended Essays
写作卷由浅入深,通常从填写表格和写短句开始,逐步过渡到 40 词、90 词直至 150 词左右的长作文。短句题考基本功:拼写、动词变位与名词性数配合;长作文则考综合能力,要求覆盖多个要点、使用多种时态并表达个人观点。高分作文的通用结构是三段式:开头直接回应题目,中间展开两到三个要点,结尾给出总结或未来计划。词汇层面要多用连接词,例如 cependant(然而)、de plus(此外)、finalement(最后),让文章读起来有层次。语法层面要主动使用过去时与将来时,哪怕每种只用一次,也能把语法分档拉高。考前把高频题目按主题分类,每个主题准备 5 到 8 句可复用的观点句,考场上有话可说。
The writing paper builds from the shallow to the deep, usually starting with form filling and short sentences, then moving through a 40-word paragraph, a 90-word task and finally an extended essay of around 150 words. Short items test the basics: spelling, verb endings and noun-adjective agreement, while the extended essay tests overall ability, requiring several points to be covered, multiple tenses to be used and a personal opinion to be expressed. A high-scoring essay follows a three-part structure: an opening that answers the question directly, a middle that develops two or three points, and a closing that offers a summary or future plans. At the vocabulary level, use linking words such as cependant, meaning however, de plus, meaning furthermore, and finalement, meaning finally, so the text reads with structure. At the grammar level, deliberately include a past tense and a future tense, even once each, because that lifts the grammar band. Before the exam, group high-frequency titles by theme and prepare five to eight reusable opinion sentences per theme, so you always have something to say.
七、三大主题模块:身份文化、本地国际与学业职业 / The Three Theme Modules: Identity and Culture, Local and Global Life, Study and Work
The WJEC French syllabus organises all the content of the four papers under three theme modules, and every exam question is drawn from them. The first module is identity and culture, covering family and friends, technology use, hobbies and celebrations; the second is local, national, international and global areas of interest, covering home town and city, travel and holidays, healthy living and environmental issues; the third is current and future study and employment, covering school life, subject choices, career plans and future ambitions. When revising, organise your material theme by theme, preparing for each one a vocabulary list, useful sentence patterns and one personal opinion. Then no matter which paper or which question appears, you can draw quickly on your theme bank and answer with fluency.
八、必备语法清单:时态、代词与从句 / Essential Grammar: Tenses, Pronouns and Subordinate Clauses
Grammar is the common foundation of all four papers, and the essential list in the official WJEC specification is actually quite short. For tenses, master six: the present, the perfect tense, or passe compose, the imperfect, or imparfait, the near future built with aller plus an infinitive, the simple future and the conditional, with the first three appearing most often in writing and speaking. For pronouns, focus on the position of direct object pronouns such as le, la and les and indirect object pronouns such as lui and leur, plus the difference between the relative pronouns qui and que, where qui is followed by a verb and que by a subject and a verb. For clauses, use que to introduce object clauses, quand for time clauses and si for conditional clauses, and learn negative structures such as ne pas, ne jamais and ne rien. Do not try to master too much; using each structure correctly in speech and writing already puts you ahead of most candidates.
九、词汇积累策略:高频词与主题词表 / Vocabulary Building: High-Frequency Words and Theme Lists
Vocabulary size sets the ceiling of your French grade, but memorising words blindly is inefficient, and the most effective strategy has three steps. First, focus on high-frequency verbs such as avoir, meaning to have, etre, meaning to be, faire, meaning to do or make, and aller, meaning to go, together with their common forms, because they appear again and again in listening and reading and knowing them unlocks most of the text. Second, build theme lists, collecting the common nouns and adjectives of the three modules into your own word bank, for example station, gate, luggage and delay for the travel theme. Third, learn collocations rather than isolated words, such as prendre le train, meaning to take the train, and faire du sport, meaning to do sport, because collocations can be used directly in speaking and writing. Keep new words to fifteen to twenty per day and review them with spaced repetition; that beats cramming a hundred words and forgetting them all.
十、评分目标与等级界限:考官如何给分 / Assessment Objectives and Grade Boundaries: How Marks Are Awarded
Understanding the marking rules saves you wasted effort. WJEC French uses the standard four objectives: AO1 listening comprehension, AO2 spoken communication, AO3 reading comprehension and AO4 written communication, which map exactly onto the four papers. The marking of speaking and writing deserves special study: examiners award bands across dimensions such as content, accuracy, pronunciation or spelling, and range of language, and full coverage of content, a bold attempt at a new tense and a willingness to express opinions all push an answer into a higher band. For grade boundaries, Wales continues to use the A star to G scale while England uses 9 to 1, and the exact cut-offs float each year with paper difficulty. In the later stages of revision, score yourself against the criteria, record your own speaking and mark your own essays to see what separates you from the next grade; that is far more targeted than blind drilling.
十一、全年备考时间线与冲刺建议 / A Year-Long Revision Timeline and Sprint Tips
Language learning is built on accumulation, and a year-long timeline can be divided into three phases. The first is the autumn foundation phase, where you follow school progress to learn new grammar and theme vocabulary while starting intensive listening and reading practice three times a week, recording every error in a mistakes notebook. The second is the strengthening phase from winter to spring, where you organise speaking outlines and writing templates by theme and complete one full past paper under timed conditions every month. The third is the sprint phase, one to two months before the exam, where the focus shifts to past papers and the marking criteria: listening every day, speaking recorded and self-scored daily, and two essays per week marked by someone else. The sprint should also familiarise you with exam procedures, especially the format and timing of the speaking test. On the night before the exam, do only light revision and rest early; fresh energy beats last-minute cramming.
