Edexcel IGCSE
Edexcel IGCSE Biology (4BI1) covers a complete chain of knowledge from cells to ecosystems and is one of the most popular international biology qualifications offered by Pearson Edexcel. Many students assume biology is simply a memorisation subject, yet recent papers place growing weight on experimental design and extended explanation. This guide follows a clear route: exam structure, ten core topic areas, practical skills and a ten-week revision plan, giving you a realistic roadmap from day one to the final paper.
Exam Structure and the Difference Between the Two Papers
The qualification is assessed through two papers. Paper 1 lasts 2 hours, is worth 110 marks and contributes 61.1% of the final grade, with multiple-choice questions, short answers and practical-based questions covering all five topics. Paper 2 lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, is worth 70 marks and makes up 38.9%; it contains fewer questions but each carries more marks, with particular emphasis on six-mark extended writing and experimental design. The five topics are: the nature and variety of living organisms; structures and functions in living organisms; reproduction and inheritance; ecology and the environment; and the use of biological resources. The best strategy is to master one topic at a time, then test yourself with whole papers under timed conditions.
Cell Structure and Testing for Biological Molecules
The cell is where biology begins. Animal and plant cells share the cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria and ribosomes; plant cells additionally have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a permanent vacuole. Mitochondria are the site of aerobic respiration, chloroplasts carry out photosynthesis, ribosomes build proteins, and the cell membrane controls what enters and leaves. Food tests are a high-frequency topic: reducing sugars turn brick-red with Benedict's reagent on heating, starch turns blue-black with iodine solution, proteins turn purple with Biuret reagent, and fats give an orange-red colour with Sudan III after an ethanol emulsion test. Make a summary table of reagent, method and result for each test and revise it until the answers come automatically.
Enzymes, Digestion and Absorption
Enzymes are biological catalysts: they are specific to their substrate, highly efficient, and sensitive to temperature and pH. As temperature rises, the reaction rate increases until the optimum is reached, beyond which the enzyme denatures; moving away from the optimum pH lowers activity in the same way. Remember that salivary amylase works best at about pH 7, while pepsin in the stomach works best at about pH 2. For digestion, learn the enzyme and product at each site: amylase in saliva and pancreatic juice breaks starch into maltose, pepsin digests proteins, trypsin continues breaking down polypeptides, and lipase splits fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Absorption takes place mainly in the small intestine, where villi greatly enlarge the surface area; glucose and amino acids enter the blood capillaries, while fatty acids and glycerol enter the lacteals.
Respiration and Gas Exchange
Respiration is divided into aerobic and anaerobic forms. Aerobic respiration occurs when oxygen is available: glucose is fully oxidised to carbon dioxide and water, releasing a large amount of energy, summarised as glucose plus oxygen giving carbon dioxide plus water. Anaerobic respiration happens without oxygen: animal cells produce lactic acid, while yeast produces ethanol and carbon dioxide. Gas exchange in humans takes place in the alveoli, which have thin moist walls and a rich capillary network, and gases move along concentration gradients. During inspiration the diaphragm contracts and flattens, the intercostal muscles contract, the chest volume increases, pressure falls and air enters the lungs. Plants exchange gases through stomata, each opened and closed by a pair of guard cells.
Circulation and Transport in Plants
The human circulatory system is a double circulation: the pulmonary circulation sends blood to the lungs for gas exchange, and the systemic circulation delivers oxygenated blood around the body. Blood consists of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets; red cells carry oxygen using haemoglobin, white cells fight infection, and platelets help blood to clot. Arteries have thick elastic walls and fast blood flow, while veins contain valves to prevent backflow. In plants, learn the two transport tissues: xylem carries water and minerals upwards, with thickened walls and no living contents, while phloem transports organic substances in both directions through sieve tubes and companion cells. Transpiration drives the upward movement of water and also helps roots absorb minerals; the drier and hotter the environment, the faster transpiration occurs.
Excretion, Temperature and Blood Glucose Control
The kidney is the central organ of excretion, and each kidney is packed with nephrons. Blood is filtered at the glomerulus to form the filtrate; as it passes along the tubules, glucose and most of the water are reabsorbed into the blood, while urea and other waste remain in the urine. The antidiuretic hormone, ADH, controls water reabsorption: when the body is short of water, more ADH is released, so urine becomes smaller in volume and more concentrated. Body temperature is controlled by the skin: in heat, blood vessels dilate and sweat glands secrete more, speeding up heat loss; in cold, vessels constrict and muscles shiver to generate heat. For blood glucose, insulin lowers the level while glucagon raises it, and the two hormones together keep the level stable.
Nervous and Hormonal Coordination
The nervous system consists of the central nervous system, the brain and spinal cord, plus the peripheral nerves. The reflex arc is the structural basis of a reflex: a receptor detects a stimulus, the signal travels through a sensory neurone to the CNS, then through a motor neurone to an effector for a response; the knee-jerk reflex and the withdrawal reflex are classic examples. Synapses are junctions between neurones: when an impulse reaches the synaptic knob, a neurotransmitter is released to pass the signal to the next cell. A common exam question contrasts hormonal and nervous coordination: nervous responses are fast, short-lived and precise, while hormonal responses are slower, longer-lasting and affect the whole body. Adrenaline raises heart rate and blood glucose, preparing the body for stressful situations.
Genetic Diagrams, Variation and Evolution
For inheritance, start with the definitions: a gene is a section of DNA located on a chromosome, and chromosomes come in pairs; alleles are different forms of the same gene. Dominant alleles are written with capital letters and recessive alleles with lower-case letters. You must be able to draw genetic diagrams for monohybrid crosses: for example, tall stem T is dominant over short t in peas, and crossing Tt with Tt gives genotype ratios TT:Tt:tt of 1:2:1 and phenotype ratios of 3:1. Sex is determined by the sex chromosomes, XX in females and XY in males. Variation can be inherited or non-inherited; natural selection lets individuals best adapted to the environment survive and reproduce, which is the mechanism of evolution, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a classic example.
Food Chains, Pyramids and Human Impact on the Environment
Ecology requires food chains and webs, energy flow and nutrient cycles. A food chain always starts with a producer, usually a green plant, which traps solar energy through photosynthesis. Only about 10% of the energy is transferred between trophic levels, so energy pyramids are always wide at the base; pyramids of numbers, however, can sometimes be inverted. The carbon and nitrogen cycles are guaranteed topics: photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide, while respiration and burning release it; nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen compounds. Human impacts include deforestation destroying habitats, burning fossil fuels intensifying the greenhouse effect, and plastic pollution harming marine life; be ready to explain each impact and suggest a conservation measure.
Core Practicals and a Ten-Week Revision Plan
Edexcel IGCSE Biology has nine core practicals, such as food tests, measuring enzyme activity, observing osmosis, testing leaves for starch with iodine to confirm photosynthesis, and measuring respiration. Practical questions typically ask you to state the independent, dependent and control variables, explain how to make results reliable, usually by repeating and taking a mean, and suggest improvements. Finally, here is a ten-week plan: weeks 1 to 2 revise topic 1 plus cells, biological molecules and movement in and out of cells; weeks 3 to 4 cover nutrition, respiration and gas exchange; week 5 covers circulation and transport in plants; week 6 covers excretion and coordination; week 7 covers inheritance and evolution; week 8 covers ecology and biological resources; week 9 completes two Paper 1 past papers with full review; week 10 completes two Paper 2 papers and one full mock exam under timed conditions.
