What is Lattice Energy?
Lattice energy is the energy released when one mole of an ionic compound is formed from its gaseous ions under standard conditions. The starting point is gaseous ions far apart, and the product is a solid crystal, so the process is exothermic. A larger lattice energy means stronger ionic bonds, a more stable lattice, and usually higher melting points and hardness. In Cambridge A-Level Chemistry, this concept links directly to the Born-Haber cycle, comparisons of ionic bond strength, and solubility analysis, so a conceptual understanding matters more than memorising a formula.
Sign Conventions and Two Directions of Definition
The sign of lattice energy is the first trap in exams. If it is defined as the energy change when gaseous ions form a crystal, the value is negative because bond formation releases heat. However, many textbooks define it as the energy needed to break one mole of crystal into gaseous ions, which is positive. Cambridge papers sometimes use both "lattice enthalpy of formation" and "lattice enthalpy of dissociation". Always check which direction the question asks for before deciding the sign, because one sign error can ruin the whole calculation.
Two Decisive Factors: Ionic Charge and Radius
Why do some ionic compounds have lattice energies of several thousand kilojoules while others have only a few hundred? There are two core reasons: ionic charge and ionic radius. By Coulomb's law, the attraction between ions is proportional to the product of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the separation, which is roughly the sum of the two ionic radii. Higher charge means stronger attraction, and smaller radius means ions sit closer together, so both effects raise lattice energy. For example, Mg2+ carries twice the charge of Na+, and O2- is much smaller than Cl-, so MgO has a far larger lattice energy than NaCl.
四、NaCl与MgO的晶格能对比 | Comparing the Lattice Energies of NaCl and MgO
Putting the two factors into concrete numbers makes the difference obvious. In NaCl the charge product is 1 x 1 = 1, while in MgO it is 2 x 2 = 4, four times larger. At the same time Mg2+ (about 72 pm) is smaller than Na+ (about 102 pm), and O2- (about 140 pm) is smaller than Cl- (about 181 pm). The combination of a fourfold charge product and shorter ion separation gives MgO a lattice energy of about 3791 kJ/mol, nearly five times the 787 kJ/mol of NaCl. This is why MgO melts at 2852 degrees Celsius while NaCl melts at only 801 degrees: a larger lattice energy means more energy is needed to break the crystal apart.
五、Born-Haber循环的五个能量台阶 | Five Energy Steps of the Born-Haber Cycle
The Born-Haber cycle is the most direct way to determine lattice energy: break the formation of an ionic compound into known energy steps and combine them using Hess's law. For NaCl, the complete cycle has five steps: the sublimation enthalpy of sodium (endothermic), the atomisation enthalpy of chlorine (endothermic), the first ionisation energy of sodium (endothermic), the electron affinity of chlorine (exothermic), and finally the lattice energy (exothermic). The sign of each step must match whether it absorbs or releases heat: endothermic is positive, exothermic is negative. When drawing the cycle, the elements start at the bottom, the ionic crystal sits at the top, and the formation enthalpy equals the sum of all steps.
六、Born-Haber循环计算实战:以NaCl为例 | Worked Example: The Born-Haber Cycle for NaCl
Let us run through a full calculation with real data, the most common exam template. Given the formation enthalpy of NaCl at -411 kJ/mol, sublimation of sodium at +107, first ionisation energy at +496, atomisation of chlorine at +122, and electron affinity of chlorine at -349, let the lattice energy be x. Then -411 = 107 + 496 + 122 + (-349) + x, so x = -787 kJ/mol. Two points matter: do not drop the negative sign of the electron affinity when summing, and the final lattice energy is negative because the process is exothermic. Cambridge mark schemes reward a correctly written cycle equation even when the arithmetic is wrong, so always show the full expression.
Why Do Experimental and Theoretical Values Differ?
The value obtained from the Born-Haber cycle is called the experimental or thermochemical lattice energy, while the value from theoretical models such as the Born-Lande equation is the theoretical value. For most ionic compounds the two are close, but for some compounds such as AgCl the experimental value is clearly larger. The reason is that the theoretical model assumes perfect ionic bonding, while in reality the cation polarises the electron cloud of the anion, giving the bond some covalent character, as described by Fajans' rules. Small highly charged cations and large easily distorted anions produce the strongest polarisation. More covalent character means a stronger actual bond, so the experimental value is larger.
Lattice Energy and Solubility: A Tug of War between Two Enthalpies
Lattice energy also plays a direct role in solubility. When an ionic compound dissolves in water, the total energy change equals the lattice energy plus the hydration enthalpy: the lattice energy breaks apart the crystal (endothermic) while hydration surrounds the ions with water (exothermic). If hydration releases enough energy to cover the lattice cost, dissolution is exothermic or spontaneous; if the lattice energy is too large and hydration cannot compensate, the compound is insoluble. MgO has an enormous lattice energy that hydration cannot match, so it barely dissolves, while NaCl dissolves easily because its moderate lattice energy and hydration enthalpy nearly balance. Remember that enthalpy is only one factor: entropy matters too, and A-Level questions often expect both.
Four Common Exam Pitfalls
The first pitfall is sign errors: writing an exothermic lattice energy as positive, or treating electron affinity as endothermic. The second is confusing ionisation energy, the energy to remove an electron from a gaseous atom, with electron affinity, the energy change when a gaseous atom gains an electron; the two have opposite directions and are a favourite multiple-choice target. The third is missing units: every energy must be given in kJ/mol. The fourth is the range of application: the Born-Haber cycle only works for ionic compounds, so giant covalent structures such as silicon dioxide cannot use it. When revising, redraw each cycle several times until you can reproduce it from memory with correct signs and arrow directions.
Summary and Revision Advice
This chapter can be condensed into three sentences: lattice energy measures ionic bond strength and is decided by ionic charge and radius; the Born-Haber cycle solves it from the formation enthalpy and a series of other energies using Hess's law; and the gap between experimental and theoretical values reveals polarisation and covalent character. Master these three threads and definition, calculation, and explanation questions all become manageable. Before the exam, memorise the data for NaCl, MgO, and AgCl, then practise past papers with a focus on sign decisions and writing the cycle equation. Because lattice energy links so often with ionisation energy, electron affinity, and hydration enthalpy, building this knowledge network secures steady marks in the thermochemistry section.
