Respiration is a core topic in the biology component of Edexcel IGCSE Science (Double Award) and one of the concepts students most often confuse. Many learners memorise the equations yet cannot explain exactly how aerobic and anaerobic respiration differ, or tell the lactate and ethanol pathways apart. This article compares the two processes side by side, covering equations, energy, products, applications and exam traps in one place, so you can secure every mark this topic offers. Respiration appears in almost every Double Award paper, typically as equation writing, energy comparison explanations and fermentation application questions, and it usually carries more than five percent of the biology marks. Whether you study Combined Science or separate Biology, mastering the comparison framework here will raise your score directly.
The Fundamental Difference Between Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration
Respiration is the biochemical process running continuously in every living cell, releasing chemical energy from organic molecules for muscle contraction, active transport and synthesis. Aerobic respiration oxidises glucose completely to carbon dioxide and water when oxygen is available; anaerobic respiration breaks glucose down only partially without oxygen, producing lactate in animal cells or ethanol and carbon dioxide in plants and yeast. The fundamental differences boil down to three points: whether oxygen is used, whether glucose is fully broken down, and how much energy is released.
Two Core Equations: From Glucose to Products
Edexcel IGCSE papers repeatedly ask candidates to write and distinguish these two equations. Aerobic respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O, complete oxidation releasing a large amount of energy. Anaerobic respiration in animal cells: C6H12O6 → 2C3H6O3, glucose only partly broken down into lactate. A useful memory aid: imagine aerobic respiration as glucose burning completely, and anaerobic respiration as glucose snapped in half; the products and energy are completely different, and the equations must never be mixed up.
The Full Aerobic Pathway: From Cytoplasm to Mitochondria
Aerobic respiration proceeds in three stages. Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm, splitting one glucose molecule into two pyruvate molecules with a net gain of two ATP; the pyruvate then enters the mitochondria where, with oxygen present, the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation complete the oxidation. One glucose molecule yields roughly 30 to 38 ATP in total. The electron transport chain on the inner mitochondrial membrane releases the most energy, which is why mitochondria are called the powerhouses of the cell.
Anaerobic Respiration in Animals: The Lactate Pathway
During vigorous exercise muscle oxygen demand exceeds supply, so cells switch to anaerobic respiration: glucose is split into lactate with only a small energy release. The accumulating lactate is a major cause of muscle ache and fatigue after exercise. Note that lactate still carries a great deal of unused chemical energy, which is exactly the evidence that anaerobic breakdown is incomplete. The body cannot excrete lactate directly; it must be re-oxidised gradually to carbon dioxide and water by aerobic respiration once exercise stops.
Anaerobic Respiration in Plants and Yeast: Ethanol Fermentation
Plant cells and yeast follow a different anaerobic route called fermentation: C6H12O6 → 2C2H5OH + 2CO2, glucose broken down into ethanol and carbon dioxide with only a small energy release. Humans have exploited this pathway for thousands of years: yeast turns sugar into alcohol in brewing, and the carbon dioxide it releases makes bread dough rise. Yeast fermentation works best at about 25 to 35 degrees Celsius; low temperatures slow the reaction while high temperatures denature the enzymes.
Energy Yield Compared: Why Aerobic Respiration Is More Efficient
Aerobic respiration releases far more energy than anaerobic respiration. Complete oxidation of one glucose molecule releases about 2880 kJ, while anaerobic respiration releases only about 210 kJ, a difference of more than tenfold. The reason is that lactate and ethanol still hold large amounts of bond energy; only aerobic respiration fully oxidises carbon-hydrogen bonds into carbon-oxygen bonds. This also explains a key ecological pattern: oxygen-dependent organisms sustain longer and more intense activity, while anaerobic organisms manage only brief energy output.
Oxygen Debt and Heavy Breathing After Exercise
After a sprint you gasp for breath, and the concept behind this is oxygen debt. The lactate accumulated during intense exercise needs oxygen to be removed: some is re-oxidised to carbon dioxide and water, while the rest is converted back into glycogen stores. The sustained heavy breathing after exercise is the body repaying that debt by processing the remaining lactate. The higher and longer the recovery breathing rate, the larger the oxygen debt owed. IGCSE questions often ask you to explain this phenomenon, and you must link lactate, oxygen and recovery breathing in your answer.
Fermentation in the Food Industry
Fermentation is a high-frequency application topic in IGCSE Biology. Yeast is used for brewing beer and wine and for leavening bread; bacteria also drive food fermentation, as when Lactobacillus turns milk into yogurt, and pickles, cheese and soy sauce all depend on microbial fermentation. Two exam questions appear constantly: why dough rises, answered by the carbon dioxide yeast produces, and why brewing vessels are sealed, answered by the need for anaerobic conditions so that yeast ferments rather than respires aerobically.
Respiratory Substrates: Glucose, Fat and Protein
Glucose is the most common respiratory substrate but not the only one. Fat has a higher proportion of carbon-hydrogen bonds and releases roughly twice as much energy per gram, making it essential for endurance events such as long-distance running; protein is broken down in quantity only when carbohydrate stores run low. When comparing substrates, the marking points are energy density, speed of supply and metabolic products. In addition, anaerobic respiration can use glucose only; fat and protein must be oxidised through the aerobic pathway, which is another favourite comparison point in exams.
十、Edexcel IGCSE 考试陷阱与答题要点 | Edexcel IGCSE Exam Traps and Answer Points
Respiration questions in Edexcel IGCSE Science papers carry five classic traps. First, do not confuse respiration with breathing: respiration is a chemical reaction inside cells, not the gas exchange in the lungs. Second, balance equations correctly: atoms must be conserved on both sides of the aerobic equation. Third, distinguish the two anaerobic pathways, reading the question to confirm whether the organism is an animal or a plant or yeast. Fourth, state the key conclusion: when asked about the purpose of respiration, always write that it releases energy for life processes. Fifth, fermentation rate experiments require you to discuss temperature, pH and substrate concentration. Finally, use precise terminology in your answers, writing Respiration rather than Breathing, because examiners award marks against key words.
