International trade and globalisation is compulsory content in Unit 6 of the Cambridge IGCSE Economics syllabus (0455), and it is the section most closely connected to real-world news. Tariffs, trade wars, multinational companies and exchange rate movements happen every day, so exam questions frequently ask students to explain real-world events using economic terminology. This article follows the Cambridge syllabus to organise every core concept, explains each one in both Chinese and English, and places easily confused ideas side by side for comparison, so that students can secure marks in both Paper 1 multiple-choice questions and Paper 2 structured questions.
What Are International Trade and Globalisation?
International trade is the buying and selling of goods and services between countries. Exports are goods and services sold by domestic producers to foreign buyers, while imports are goods and services bought from abroad. Countries trade because their factor endowments differ: the United Kingdom specialises in financial services, China has cost advantages in electronics manufacturing, and Middle Eastern countries own oil reserves. Globalisation is a broader idea. It is the growing economic, cultural and political interdependence of countries around the world, shown by rising trade volumes, cross-border capital flows, instant information exchange and faster migration. Distinguishing the two terms is a classic first question, and multiple-choice papers often list four statements and ask students which one describes globalisation rather than simple trade.
Absolute vs Comparative Advantage
Why do countries trade? Adam Smith proposed the theory of absolute advantage: if one country can produce a good using fewer resources than another, it has an absolute advantage, and both sides gain by specialising in their strongest products and exchanging them. David Ricardo went further with comparative advantage, showing that even a country with no absolute advantage in any good can still gain from trade as long as opportunity costs differ between products. Opportunity cost is the key to understanding comparative advantage: a country has the comparative advantage in the good it can produce at a lower opportunity cost, meaning it gives up less of other goods. IGCSE papers often give a table of two countries and two products and ask students to calculate opportunity costs and decide who should specialise in what. Such questions are almost pure arithmetic, so substituting the numbers into the opportunity cost formula nearly guarantees full marks.
Why Free Trade Improves Consumer Welfare
Free trade means trade between countries without artificial restrictions. The Cambridge syllabus lists five benefits of free trade. First, consumers pay lower prices because imports carry no tariff mark-up and domestic firms must cut prices to compete. Second, choice widens, as consumers can buy goods that cannot be produced at home, such as tropical fruit in the United Kingdom. Third, larger markets create economies of scale, so rising output lowers average costs. Fourth, specialisation deepens, and countries concentrate resources in their most efficient industries, raising total world output. Fifth, stronger competition forces domestic firms to improve efficiency and innovate. Exam questions often ask students to state and explain two benefits for four or six marks. The full cause-and-effect chain must be written out, for example linking lower prices to increased supply and stronger competition, because examiners reward complete explanations rather than single keywords.
Tariffs vs Quotas
Protectionism means government measures that restrict imports to protect domestic industries, and the two most common tools are tariffs and quotas. A tariff is a tax imposed on imported goods. It raises the import price, reduces the quantity imported, increases domestic output and gives the government tax revenue, but consumer surplus falls and the economy suffers a deadweight loss because resources are diverted into inefficient high-cost domestic production. A quota sets a maximum limit on the quantity of imports. Its effects are similar to a tariff, but the government collects no revenue; instead the difference is captured by foreign exporters who receive import licences. Comparison questions appear almost every year: a tariff lets the government earn revenue, a quota lets foreign exporters profit, and in both cases consumers pay higher prices. The embargo is a third tool, a complete ban on a product, such as arms embargoes used in political sanctions.
Subsidies, Embargoes and Administrative Barriers
Beyond tariffs and quotas, the Cambridge syllabus requires three further measures. First, subsidies to domestic producers: the government pays domestic firms so their costs fall, making home-produced goods cheaper than imports and reducing import demand, although taxpayers finance the subsidy and dumping may result. Second, administrative barriers, which include lengthy customs inspections, strict product standards and complicated licensing systems that restrict imports indirectly through rules and paperwork, for example requiring every batch of imported food to be tested. Third, embargoes that ban a product completely. Questions on this area usually present a short news extract and ask students to identify the protectionist measure being used and explain its purpose. A strong answer has three layers: name the measure, define it, and state its effects on price and quantity. Note that a subsidy benefits domestic producers directly, not the government or consumers.
How Exchange Rate Changes Affect Trade Flows
The exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another, and Cambridge IGCSE focuses mainly on the effects of exchange rate movements under a floating system. Depreciation means the home currency falls in value: exports become cheaper for foreign buyers so the quantity exported rises, while imports become more expensive for domestic consumers so the quantity imported falls, and the trade balance tends to improve. Appreciation works in the opposite direction: exports become dearer, imports become cheaper, and the trade balance tends to worsen. A typical exam question describes a rise in UK interest rates causing the pound to appreciate and asks for the effects on UK exporting firms and consumers. Answers should be built in two steps: first state how the exchange rate moves, then analyse the effects on trade volumes, domestic employment and prices. Appreciation also helps to reduce imported inflation, but it damages export-orientated industries, and weighing these two sides is exactly what a six-mark evaluation question expects.
The Current Account: Surplus vs Deficit
The balance of payments records all economic transactions between a country and the rest of the world, and the current account records four items: trade in goods, trade in services, primary income and current transfers. Trade in goods covers visible products such as cars, services cover tourism, finance and transport, primary income includes profits from overseas investments and workers' remittances, and current transfers include international aid. A current account surplus means export earnings exceed import spending, while a deficit means the opposite. The syllabus requires the causes and consequences of a deficit: causes include falling competitiveness of domestic products, an overvalued exchange rate, and strong domestic demand that pulls in imports; consequences include shrinking domestic industries, rising unemployment, the need to borrow from abroad to finance the gap, and possible currency depreciation. Multiple-choice questions often test the components of the current account, for example recognising that spending on overseas holidays is a service import.
Why Do MNCs Locate Production in Developing Countries?
Multinational companies, or MNCs, are large businesses that operate in several countries, such as Apple, Toyota and Nestle. Firms locate production in developing countries for four main reasons: first, labour costs are much lower, which dramatically reduces manufacturing expenses; second, locating close to raw materials cuts transport costs; third, being inside fast-growing emerging markets serves local consumers directly and avoids tariffs; and fourth, host governments often offer investment incentives such as tax holidays and subsidies. For the host country, MNCs bring jobs, technology transfer, tax revenue and foreign exchange, but they also cause environmental damage, the closure of local small firms, and the repatriation of profits to the home country. This topic often appears as a source-based question: the extract reports an MNC opening a factory, and students must analyse the firm's motives and evaluate the impact on the host country. The evaluation must present both benefits and drawbacks and end with a reasoned judgement.
Benefits and Costs of Globalisation
Globalisation is a double-edged sword, and the Cambridge syllabus requires analysis in both directions. The benefits include expanding world trade that lets countries exploit comparative advantage, raising world output and income per person; MNC investment that brings capital, technology and jobs to developing countries; lower prices and greater choice for consumers; and faster knowledge diffusion through information and transport technology, which allows developing countries to catch up more quickly. The costs include widening income inequality, because skilled workers and capital owners gain most while low-skilled workers face import competition and unemployment; serious environmental damage, since international transport raises carbon emissions and production moves to countries with weaker environmental rules; cultural homogenisation, as local industries, languages and traditions come under pressure; and deeper interdependence, which makes financial crises spread across borders more easily. Evaluation questions expect a balanced view, and a full-mark answer must include at least one counter-argument supported by an example, such as the Bangladeshi garment industry creating millions of jobs while wages remain low.
Why Is Protectionism Rising Again?
Protectionism has risen noticeably since the 2008 financial crisis, especially after 2016, and Cambridge exams like to test this through news extracts. The reasons include the following. First, the gains from globalisation are distributed unevenly, so blue-collar voters in developed countries who have lost manufacturing jobs support protectionist policies. Second, in great-power rivalry such as the US-China trade disputes, tariffs are used as bargaining chips. Third, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the risk of relying too heavily on overseas supply chains, prompting countries to secure domestic production of essential goods such as masks, medicines and semiconductors. Fourth, governments want to protect strategically important industries such as electric vehicles and semiconductors, giving domestic firms time to build a competitive advantage. Fifth, many countries wish to correct persistent trade deficits. Answers should distinguish the short-term political gains of protectionism from its long-term economic costs: tariffs may protect some jobs, but they raise prices and weaken firms' incentives to innovate.
十一、IGCSE经济考试中国际贸易题型的答题思路 | Answering Trade Questions in the IGCSE Exam
In Cambridge IGCSE Economics Paper 2, trade questions usually appear as source-based questions with four common levels of demand. The first level asks for definitions, for example explaining exchange rate, tariff or comparative advantage, and a complete definition in economic terms is required rather than an example alone. The second level asks students to explain a phenomenon using the extract, such as the effect of a tariff on import quantity, and the answer must show the full chain from higher price to lower demand. The third level requires analysis, typically of the impact of globalisation on workers in developing countries, and at least two impacts must be developed in depth. The fourth level is evaluation, introduced by the word Discuss, for example discussing whether protectionism does more harm than good. A strong answer sets out arguments on both sides, reaches a judgement, and supports it with evidence from the extract. Before writing, check the mark allocation: a four-mark question needs one complete cause-and-effect chain, while an eight-mark question needs four developed points plus a concluding judgement.
