Cold environments open Topic 2A (Glaciated Landscapes and Change) in the Edexcel A-Level Geography specification and appear regularly on Paper 1. This article maps the nature and global distribution of cold environments, from the classification of glacial and periglacial systems to the latitude, altitude, ocean current and continentality controls behind their location. We then link distribution to Quaternary glacial cycles, climate change and exam technique so you can build a complete revision framework.
What are Cold Environments?
A cold environment is any area where temperatures are low enough for snow and ice to accumulate, or where freeze-thaw processes dominate the landscape. Geographers split them into two families. Glacial environments contain glacier ice and are shaped by erosion and deposition by ice; Antarctica, the Greenland ice sheet and alpine valley glaciers are the classic examples. Periglacial environments are cold but largely ice-free, and are defined by permafrost and repeated freezing and thawing, as seen across the Siberian tundra. The decisive distinction is whether glacier ice persists, because that controls the dominant processes, landforms and ecosystems. Edexcel expects you to separate the two types and explain their characteristics and distribution.
Two Global Distribution Belts: High Latitude and High Altitude
The global map of cold environments shows two clear belts. The first is the high-latitude polar belt: Antarctica is almost entirely covered by an ice sheet holding around 90 percent of the world's glacier ice, while in the northern hemisphere the Greenland ice sheet, the Canadian Arctic islands, northern Scandinavia and Siberia carry the main ice masses. The second belt is high-altitude mountain terrain: the Alps, Himalayas, Andes and Rockies develop valley glaciers above the snow line, and even equatorial peaks such as Mount Kilimanjaro and the equatorial Andes support glaciers. Periglacial environments spread further, with the circumpolar tundra zone running from Alaska through northern Canada into Siberia, and the high plateau of Tibet also classified as periglacial. Recognising these two belts is the foundation for any distribution question.
Glacial Types: Ice Sheets, Ice Caps, Ice Shelves and Valley Glaciers
Glacial environments are subdivided by size and shape. An ice sheet is a dome-shaped ice mass larger than 50,000 square kilometres that flows outward from its centre; only Antarctica and Greenland qualify today, and together they store around 99 percent of the world's glacial fresh water. An ice cap is smaller but still dome-shaped, typical of Iceland's Vatnajokull and other high-latitude islands. An ice shelf is the floating extension of an ice sheet over the sea, such as the Ross Ice Shelf, and its stability depends strongly on ocean temperature. A valley glacier occupies a pre-existing valley above the snow line, like the Aletsch Glacier in the Alps, while a cirque glacier is smaller still, nestling in a hollow on the mountainside. Exam questions frequently ask you to compare the distribution and formation conditions of different glacier types, so learn named examples such as Greenland and the Aletsch Glacier.
The Core of Periglacial Environments: Permafrost and the Active Layer
The defining feature of a periglacial environment is permafrost, ground that stays at or below 0 degrees Celsius for at least two consecutive years. It is classified by extent: continuous permafrost covers over 90 percent of an area, discontinuous covers 50 to 90 percent, sporadic 10 to 50 percent, and isolated patches less than 10 percent, grading away as latitude falls. Above the permafrost sits the active layer, which thaws each summer and refreezes in winter, and plant roots are confined to this thin surface band. Repeated freeze-thaw creates distinctive landforms such as patterned ground, pingos, solifluction lobes and thermokarst lakes. The Edexcel specification stresses how active-layer depth affects infrastructure: buildings and pipelines constructed on permafrost settle and crack when the active layer deepens or the permafrost degrades, a real problem in Alaskan and Siberian towns.
How Latitude, Altitude, Continentality, Currents and Relief Control Distribution
Distribution is controlled by several factors that the specification asks you to explain in turn. Latitude comes first: solar radiation weakens towards the poles, so high-latitude areas receive little annual heat, the snow line falls and glacial conditions develop easily. Altitude matters just as much because temperature drops at roughly 6.5 degrees Celsius per kilometre, which is why low-latitude mountains carry glaciers and why the snow line descends from around 5,000 metres near the equator to sea level at the poles. Continentality controls seasonal temperature range: continental interiors like Siberia freeze hard in winter but receive little precipitation, so their glaciers are smaller than those in maritime climates. Ocean currents and prevailing winds shape maritime glaciers: the North Atlantic Drift keeps northwest Europe relatively mild with fewer glaciers, while the cold Labrador Current allows glaciers to persist at the southern tip of Greenland. Plate tectonics indirectly determines mountain distribution, since collision zones raise the high ranges that host glaciers. In exams, structure your answer around the six controls: latitude, altitude, continentality, currents, wind and relief.
The Quaternary Ice Ages: How Distribution Changes Over Time
Cold environments are not fixed; their distribution swings dramatically over geological time. The Quaternary period, covering the last 2.6 million years, is marked by repeated glacial and interglacial cycles. At the Last Glacial Maximum, around 18,000 to 20,000 years ago, ice covered roughly 32 percent of the land surface compared with about 10 percent today, burying Scandinavia, northern Canada and most of Britain. The main driver is the Milankovitch cycles: changes in orbital eccentricity, axial tilt and precession, with periods of roughly 100,000, 41,000 and 23,000 years, alter the solar radiation reaching high latitudes and so push ice sheets to advance or retreat. Interglacials such as the present Holocene are warmer and ice shrinks back. This timescale matters in exams because distribution questions often ask you to distinguish the modern pattern from the glacial maximum, for example noting that London sat near the ice margin 20,000 years ago.
Climate Change and Distribution Shifts: Glacier Retreat and Permafrost Thaw
Climate warming is rapidly redrawing the map of cold environments. Rising global temperatures lift the snow line and push glacier mass balances negative, so most mountain glaciers worldwide are retreating; the Alps have lost about 60 percent of their ice area since 1850, and the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass at an accelerating rate, contributing significantly to sea-level rise. Permafrost is degrading too: the southern limit of northern-hemisphere permafrost is migrating north, the active layer deepens, and thawing ground releases carbon dioxide and methane in a positive feedback that amplifies warming. The overall shift is contraction towards higher latitudes and altitudes, and some small low-altitude glaciers may disappear within this century. Edexcel data-response questions often pair satellite images with glacier-length records, asking you to evaluate the evidence and discuss impacts on downstream water supplies, sea level and ecosystems, so cite named cases and figures rather than making vague claims.
Tundra Ecosystems: How Species Adapt to Extreme Conditions
Cold-environment ecosystems have low biodiversity but striking adaptations. Tundra, the main vegetation zone of circumpolar periglacial areas, has a short growing season and long winter, and permafrost prevents deep rooting, so plants are mostly dwarf shrubs, mosses and lichens that grow slowly. Animal strategies include thick fat and dense fur for insulation, as in polar bears and musk ox; seasonal migration or hibernation to escape the coldest months, as with reindeer; and white coats that provide both camouflage and warmth. Tundra food chains are simple, so when a top predator such as the polar bear is threatened the whole web is vulnerable; these ecosystems are fragile and slow to recover. Mining, oil extraction and tourism leave lasting scars because organic matter decomposes slowly in the cold. For adaptation questions, organise your answer into morphological, behavioural and physiological adaptations, each with a named example.
Resource Value and Development Challenges: Water, Minerals and Infrastructure
Cold environments offer major resources alongside severe development challenges. On water, mountain glaciers act as solid reservoirs for downstream rivers: Andean glaciers supply drinking water to cities in Peru and Bolivia, Himalayan glaciers feed the Ganges and the Yangtze, and glacier retreat threatens the water security of hundreds of millions of people. On energy and minerals, the Arctic holds large oil and gas reserves and Greenland and Siberia are rich in minerals, but extraction is limited by extreme cold, permafrost and months of polar night. Infrastructure is the hardest problem: roads, pipelines and buildings on permafrost need special engineering, such as the elevated Trans-Alaska Pipeline with refrigeration units that protect the frozen ground. Shipping adds further value, since Arctic routes shorten the sea distance between Asia and Europe, though at environmental risk. Frame exam answers around the balance of opportunities and challenges, listing resource gains against environmental costs and engineering difficulties, each backed by named places.
Exam Focus: High-Frequency Topics and Answer Frameworks
Here are the high-frequency question types and answer frameworks for this topic. Definition questions ask for cold environments, glacial and periglacial environments, permafrost and the active layer; always state the temperature or time criterion precisely. Distribution questions ask you to describe and explain patterns, so structure the answer around the two belts and the six controls, with named examples. Comparison questions, such as ice sheets versus valley glaciers or continuous versus discontinuous permafrost, are best answered by contrasting features point by point in prose. Evaluative essays supply evidence and ask you to assess climate-change evidence or the pros and cons of development; a strong structure states a judgement, cites data and case studies, analyses several angles and ends with a conditional conclusion. For data-response items such as glacier-length graphs or permafrost maps, read the figure before writing and check units and trends. Memorise four case studies, Greenland, the Alps, Siberia and the Andes, which cover most extended questions. Practise with Edexcel Paper 1 past papers and mark schemes, and study examiner reports to find where marks are commonly lost.
