IB IA?| What is the IB Internal Assessment?
IB IA(Internal Assessment,内部评估)是IB课程中由校内老师评分、再由IBO抽查复核的独立研究任务。
The IB Internal Assessment (IA) is an independent research task marked by your own teacher and then externally moderated by the IBO. Nearly every IB subject includes one: Mathematics requires a Mathematical Exploration, the sciences require laboratory reports, Economics requires a commentary, and Language and Literature includes an oral assessment. The key difference from external exams is that the IA is not a timed exam paper; it is a personal project completed over several weeks or months, assessed on your research process rather than just the final answer.
二、IA在总分中的权重| How Much Your IA Counts Toward the Final Grade
The IA is usually worth around 20% of the final grade, with small variations between subjects. In Mathematics, both Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI) allocate 20% of the total score to the IA, marked out of 20. Most science subjects and Economics use a similar weighting. What does 20% mean in practice? If you score 18 on your IA while a classmate scores 12, that six-mark gap equals the value of a large exam question and can easily lift your overall grade boundary. Many students pour all their energy into exam drilling and overlook the IA, yet it is one of the most controllable marks in the whole diploma.
三、数学IA的五个评分标准| The Five Assessment Criteria for a Mathematics IA
A Mathematics IA is marked against five criteria totalling 20 marks: Presentation (4 marks), Mathematical Communication (4 marks), Personal Engagement (3 marks), Reflection (3 marks) and Use of Mathematics (6 marks). Use of Mathematics carries the most weight and rewards the appropriate application of higher-level tools such as calculus, matrices or probability distributions. Personal Engagement is what separates strong candidates from average ones: if your topic connects to your interests, daily life or intended university course, and you show genuine initiative in exploring it, those three marks are within reach. Understanding what each criterion demands is the first step to scoring deliberately.
四、如何选择一个高分IA选题| How to Choose a High-Scoring IA Topic
Topic choice sets the ceiling of your mark. A strong IA topic meets three conditions: first, it connects to a personal interest such as sports data, game probability or social media habits, which makes Personal Engagement easy to secure; second, it allows the use of intermediate to advanced mathematics rather than basic functions alone; and third, it has enough data or a model to sustain a full exploration. Avoid two types of topics: overused classics such as coin tossing or car park design, which examiners have seen hundreds of times and approach with lower expectations, and over-ambitious questions such as predicting the stock market with mathematics, which tend to produce shallow analysis and a weak conclusion.
Designing and Refining Your Research Question
One IA explores exactly one focused research question. A good question is specific, measurable and operational: "How does my swimming speed change with training time, and can an exponential model fit it?" is far stronger than "an analysis of swimming training". Three points matter when refining the question: it must be answerable with mathematical tools, otherwise the Use of Mathematics criterion cannot be earned; it must have depth that lets you progress from a simple model to a more sophisticated one; and it must be bounded enough to complete within the page limit. State the question prominently in your introduction and return to it explicitly in the conclusion so the examiner can trace a clear line of inquiry.
六、IA正文的标准结构| The Standard Structure of an IA Report
A high-scoring IA follows a standard skeleton: introduction (research question, motivation and aims), methodology (how data was collected and which tools were chosen), mathematical treatment (modelling, calculations and graphs), results and analysis, evaluation and reflection, conclusion, references and appendix. The introduction sets the scene and poses the research question; the methodology must explain in detail where the data came from, whether it was measured experimentally, gathered by survey or taken from a public dataset; the mathematical treatment forms the core, showing intermediate steps rather than only final answers; the evaluation discusses limitations and sources of error; and the reflection summarises what you learned and what you would do differently. Following this skeleton secures most of the four Presentation marks.
Mathematical Treatment: Building from Simple to Complex
Use of Mathematics is worth 6 marks and is the criterion that separates the best from the rest. To score highly you must go beyond basic calculations at GCSE or standard IB level and demonstrate tools appropriate to your course: AA students can draw on calculus, series, matrices and complex numbers, while AI students can use statistical tests, Markov chains and graph theory. A proven technique is progressive modelling: build a simplified model to obtain a first result, then introduce more realistic assumptions to refine it, comparing the two outcomes. For example, start with constant-speed swimming, then fit an exponentially decaying velocity model, then incorporate a segmented training plan. This progression demonstrates both technical command and critical thinking, which is exactly the evidence examiners look for in the top band.
Evaluation and Reflection: The Hallmark of Top Candidates
Many students rush to the end after the mathematical treatment and lose marks in evaluation and reflection. Evaluation requires you to honestly confront the limitations of your model: is the data biased, is the sample large enough, are the assumptions reasonable? If you use linear regression to predict grades, for instance, you should discuss that correlation does not imply causation and identify possible confounding variables. Reflection asks you to look back at the whole process: what difficulties did you meet and how did you overcome them, and how would you improve the model with more time? These passages may feel intangible, but they are direct scoring opportunities for both Personal Engagement and Reflection. Remember: without substantive evaluation and reflection, an IA cannot reach the top band even with flawless calculations.
Common Traps That Cost You Marks
Based on examiner reports and past high-scoring work, five mistakes cause most lost marks. First, an over-broad topic produces superficial analysis and unused mathematics. Second, downloading data from the internet without stating the source breaches academic integrity rules. Third, showing only final results while hiding intermediate steps means the examiner cannot judge your ability. Fourth, graphs without titles, axis labels or units lose Presentation marks. Fifth, piling up complex formulae without explaining what each symbol means makes the examiner suspect copying. Moreover, any model or dataset borrowed from others must be properly cited: the IBO's academic integrity requirements and the rigor of external moderation are far stricter than most students expect.
A Realistic Eight-Week Timeline from Topic to Submission
Leaving your IA until the last two weeks is the enemy of a high score. A reliable eight-week plan looks like this: week one, settle the topic and draft the research question, confirming feasibility and difficulty with your teacher; weeks two and three, collect data and read relevant modelling literature; weeks four and five, complete the core mathematical treatment and produce graphs; week six, write the first draft, focusing on introduction, methodology and analysis; week seven, add evaluation and reflection and check the overall structure; week eight, polish the language, check formatting and references, and submit. The key is leaving time for at least one round of teacher feedback, because your school marker's comments before submission are worth more than any guide. Spending one hour each weekend reviewing progress beats a month of last-minute cramming.
