IB文凭课程(IB Diploma Programme)的三大核心课程是TOK(知识论)、EE(拓展论文)和CAS(创造、活动与服务)。
The IB Diploma Programme requires every student to complete three core components: TOK, the Extended Essay, and CAS. TOK is the most philosophical element: instead of teaching subject content, it asks students to examine how knowledge itself is produced, verified, and used. High scores rarely come from raw intelligence. They come from understanding the assessment criteria and mastering a clear argument structure. This guide walks through the assessment format, knowledge questions, argument frameworks, and exhibition writing to help you reach the top band.
Many IB students assume TOK is just one essay. In fact, the final TOK grade combines two components: the externally assessed TOK Essay, worth 67 percent of the grade, and the internally assessed TOK Exhibition, worth 33 percent. For the essay, you choose one of six official prescribed titles and write an argument of up to 1,600 words. For the exhibition, you select three objects, or images of objects, and write a commentary of up to 950 words linked to one of the 35 IA prompts. The combined result is reported on an A to E scale and, together with the Extended Essay, contributes up to three bonus points toward the IB diploma.
常见的高分KQ模板包括"在多大程度上……"(To what extent...)、"我们如何知道……"(How do we know...)、"什么才算……"(What counts as...)。
The knowledge question, or KQ, is the engine of the TOK essay. A good KQ must meet three conditions. First, it asks about knowledge itself rather than a factual detail: "How do we know climate change is caused by humans?" is a factual question, while "To what extent is scientific knowledge shaped by the methods used to obtain it?" is a genuine KQ. Second, a KQ is general and transferable across contexts. Third, it is contestable: reasonable people can answer it in different ways. Useful KQ templates include "To what extent...", "How do we know...", and "What counts as...". Before drafting, rewrite your chosen prescribed title into two or three candidate KQs and keep the one with the richest room for analysis.
三、TOK论文评分标准里的四个维度 | Four Dimensions of the TOK Essay Assessment
The official assessment instrument judges the essay holistically along four dimensions. The first is whether the essay clearly identifies and stays focused on a knowledge question. The second is the quality of analysis: how deeply the claims and counterclaims are developed. The third is the range of perspectives: whether the essay draws on at least two areas of knowledge and fairly represents different positions. The fourth is implications: what the argument means for the real world, for the individual, or for other areas of knowledge. The top band of 9-10 requires an essay that stays consistently focused on the KQ, argues rigorously, and weighs multiple perspectives. As you write, keep asking: which dimension does this sentence advance?
四、知识领域(AOK)如何搭配使用 | Combining Areas of Knowledge in Your Essay
Under the current syllabus, the areas of knowledge include mathematics, the natural sciences, the human sciences, history, the arts, and religious and indigenous knowledge systems. High-scoring essays usually contrast two AOKs in depth rather than touching every area superficially. Three pairings work well: similar areas to expose subtle differences, such as mathematics and the natural sciences; distant areas to create productive tension, such as history and the natural sciences; and one practical area plus one critical area, such as the arts and history. For each AOK you must state its methods explicitly: mathematics relies on deductive proof, the natural sciences on controlled experiments and peer review, and history on the interpretation of evidence and source criticism. Different methods produce different answers to the same KQ, and that contrast is where your depth comes from.
Claims and Counterclaims: The Core Argument
A TOK essay is not a persuasive speech; it is a systematic analysis of a knowledge question. Each body paragraph should follow a claim-analysis-counterclaim-response pattern. State a clear claim with supporting evidence, then introduce a counterclaim from another perspective, explain why it is reasonable, and finally respond by qualifying your original claim: the claim holds under condition X but the counterclaim is more persuasive in situation Y. A common mistake is dismissing the counterclaim with a single sentence such as "some people disagree" and moving on. Examiners want to see you thinking between the two positions and reaching a conditional, nuanced conclusion.
Templates for the Introduction and Conclusion
Use a funnel structure for the introduction. Open with a concrete situation or a common puzzle, then state the essay's knowledge question in explicit KQ form, then outline your central claim and the route of the argument by naming the two AOKs you will compare. A final sentence posing a mini-KQ can lead naturally into the body. The conclusion should not simply repeat the introduction: summarise how the argument answered the KQ, discuss the implications, and close by raising a smaller new question, such as what we can still trust if the sources of evidence are themselves contaminated. Keep the introduction and conclusion together under roughly 250 to 300 words so the body paragraphs carry the analysis.
Three Criteria for Choosing Strong Examples
Examples are the flesh of a TOK essay, but strong examples must satisfy three criteria at once. First, authenticity: prefer events you have experienced or can verify accurately, such as a school science experiment, a historical event, or a news report, and never invent data. Second, specificity: a concrete case, such as the role of randomised controlled trials in the 2020 vaccine development, is far stronger than a vague statement that scientists do experiments. Third, relevance: for every example, state explicitly how it supports or challenges your claim, and follow it immediately with an analytical sentence. Build a bank of about four deep cases and reuse each once or twice, rather than sprinkling ten small examples across the essay.
The Knowledge Framework in Practice
The current syllabus organises TOK content around a knowledge framework with four dimensions. Scope covers what an area of knowledge studies and where its boundaries lie. Perspectives covers how people from different backgrounds view the same issue. Methods and tools covers how knowledge is produced in that area. Ethics covers whether the acquisition and use of knowledge carries responsibility. These four dimensions are also scaffolding for your analysis. Whenever you feel stuck, ask in sequence: what is the scope of this AOK, what changes when the perspective shifts, how reliable are the methods themselves, and does an ethical issue arise here? The same framework structures each object analysis in the exhibition commentary.
九、TOK展览:三件物品与950字评论的搭配 | The TOK Exhibition: Objects and Commentary
The exhibition is worth 33 percent of the TOK grade, and because it is scored by your school and then moderated by the IB, students often underestimate its difficulty. You choose one of 35 IA prompts, select three objects, which may be real objects, photographs, or models, and write a commentary of at most 950 words, roughly 300 words per object. The high-score trick for choosing objects is specificity with a story: rather than picking a generic object like a phone, choose your grandfather's old radio and explain how it shows that technology changes the way knowledge spreads. Each commentary paragraph should cover what the object is, how it links to the prompt, and what knowledge question that link reveals. Ideally the three objects progress or contrast with each other so the commentary reads as a small argument.
Ten Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
First, the KQ is written as a factual question and the essay turns into popular science. Second, the essay exceeds 1,600 words or the commentary exceeds 950, which caps the grade immediately. Third, only one AOK is analysed, leaving the perspectives dimension thin. Fourth, counterclaims are dismissed in one line with no response. Fifth, examples float free of the claim with no analytical follow-up. Sixth, the introduction restates the prescribed title instead of posing your own KQ. Seventh, empty phrases such as "I agree" or "in my opinion" replace reasons. Eighth, the ethics dimension is ignored, especially for medical, technological, or wartime topics. Ninth, exhibition objects are too abstract, such as "the internet" or "knowledge", with no concrete carrier. Tenth, the commentary describes the object but never answers what knowledge question it reveals. Working through this checklist against a draft often lifts the grade by one or two bands.
