它与TOK论文的分工 / What Is the TOK Exhibition and How Does It Differ from the Essay?

TOK(Theory of Knowledge,认识论)是IBDP三大核心课程之一。

Theory of Knowledge is one of the three core components of the IB Diploma. Since first assessment in 2022, the TOK internal assessment has been the exhibition, which replaced the old oral presentation. Each student chooses one prescribed prompt, selects three objects from the real world, and writes a commentary of no more than 950 words explaining how each object links to that prompt. The exhibition is marked by the classroom teacher and a sample is externally moderated by the IB; it carries 33 percent of the TOK grade, while the externally assessed essay carries 67 percent. The two results enter the TOK and EE matrix that awards 0 to 3 bonus points toward the diploma, and a grade E in either component means the diploma is not awarded at all.

The 35 Prescribed Prompts: Choose Exactly One, Word for Word

例如What counts as knowledge?(什么才算知识?)、Are some types of knowledge more useful than others?(某些类型的知识是否更有用?)、Who owns knowledge?(知识归谁所有?)

The prompts are 35 knowledge questions published in the official TOK guide. You must choose exactly one, keep its wording unchanged, and never invent a question of your own. Typical examples include What counts as knowledge?, Are some types of knowledge more useful than others? and Who owns knowledge?. Once chosen, all three objects must connect to that single prompt. Several students in the same class may use the same prompt, but every exhibition is individual work and group work is not permitted. An exhibition that is not based on a prescribed prompt receives zero, which is the most common fatal mistake of all.

Choosing Three Objects: Specific, Real-World and Defensible

Objects must be specific, real and defensible. The IB explicitly rejects generic categories: a textbook is too vague, whereas the IB Biology textbook I used in Grade 11 is a legitimate specific object. Objects may come from school, home, online life or extracurricular activities. Official examples include a political leader's tweet, an image of Picasso's Guernica, the student's own extended essay, and a basketball used in PE lessons. The correct order of work is to understand the knowledge question inside the prompt first, then hunt for objects that illuminate it; picking objects first and forcing a connection afterwards usually produces a weak commentary. Every object should have a concrete context you can describe, and the clearer the context, the easier the writing becomes.

Digital and Physical Objects: Images, Tweets and Referencing Rules

Objects may be physical or digital. When a physical object is impractical to display, such as a famous painting kept in a museum, a photograph of it is acceptable. Typical digital objects include a politician's tweet, a news article or an internet meme. Every image must be referenced correctly, and digital objects must include their source as well. The submission is a single file containing a title that states the prompt, images of the three objects, a commentary on each object, and citations. The showcase stage, where the exhibition is displayed to classmates, parents and the school community, is not part of the formal assessment, but schools usually organise it so students can share their work.

The 950-Word Commentary: Structure and Word Allocation

The commentary has a hard ceiling of 950 words, excluding references. For each object the official requirements are identical: identify the object and its specific real-world context, justify why it was chosen, and explain its link to the prompt. A typical allocation splits the 950 words roughly equally, around 300 per object, with a few words left for a minimal introduction. Because the limit is tight, avoid long openings and conclusions, and spend the space on analysing the object-prompt link. There is no minimum length, but very short commentaries usually signal underdeveloped analysis that teachers find hard to reward. Count the words carefully before submission, since going over the limit is penalised directly.

A Four-Step Template for Each Object Commentary

A reliable four-step template works for every object. First, introduce the object in one or two sentences: what it is and where it comes from. Second, establish its specific real-world context and explain why that context is representative. Third, argue directly how the object responds to the prompt, using TOK concepts naturally, such as shared and personal knowledge, testimony, language, emotion or reason. Fourth, step back and acknowledge a limitation or counter-perspective. Strong commentaries do not pile up jargon; they let the concrete details of the object enter a genuine conversation with the knowledge question. The three commentaries stand independently, and there is no need to force links between the objects themselves.

Using a Theme to Narrow Down Your Object Choices

The TOK course has one core theme, knowledge and the knower, plus five optional themes: knowledge and technology, knowledge and language, knowledge and indigenous societies, knowledge and religion, and knowledge and politics. The IB strongly recommends rooting the exhibition in a theme, because a theme helps you narrow down object choices quickly and gives the three objects a shared knowledge perspective. A student working with knowledge and language, for example, might organise objects around translation errors, the wording of official documents, or differences between first and second language, producing a more coherent and deeper commentary. Even though the prompt itself carries no theme label, using theme thinking to filter objects is the most efficient way to start.

The Assessment Instrument: Convincing Links Decide Your Mark

There is no model answer; marking follows the official assessment instrument, applied holistically by the teacher. The instrument focuses on three things: whether each object-prompt link is explicit, whether the justification is convincing, and whether the explanation shows genuine understanding of TOK concepts. It runs in bands from excellent down to elementary, and the top band requires all three requirements at once. After teacher marking, the IB moderates a sample of exhibitions externally and scores can be adjusted up or down, so the real goal is to write work that convinces an outside moderator, not merely the classroom teacher. Chasing vocabulary quantity is pointless; arguing each link properly is what earns the marks.

Teacher Feedback Rules: You Get One Draft, Then It Is Final

Teachers may give feedback on only one draft, and the next version handed in must be the final submission. Feedback can be oral or written advice, but the teacher may not edit the work. This makes the single draft extremely valuable: confirm your prompt and object choices with the teacher before writing, polish the first draft seriously, then use the feedback for one focused revision before submitting the final version. Schools typically allocate about eight teaching hours to the exhibition task, covering the requirements, questions and authenticity checks. Academic honesty demands that the work is entirely your own, and teachers will verify citations and the authenticity of the content.

Common Mistakes and a Checklist of Pitfalls to Avoid

The five most common mark-losers are: objects that are too generic, such as a phone rather than one specific phone and a feature of it; commentaries that describe the object instead of answering the prompt; exceeding the 950-word limit and being penalised; forced connections between objects and the prompt that make the reader do the work; and TOK jargon that is never explained. Before submission, run a final checklist: is the prompt used word for word? Is every object specific and drawn from the real world? Does each commentary cover context, argument and link? Are all references complete? Is the total under 950 words?

A Four-Week Timeline and the Exhibition Showcase

A four-week plan works well. Week one: read all 35 prompts, choose one you genuinely care about, and shortlist six to eight candidate objects linked to a theme. Week two: settle on the three objects, confirm feasibility with your teacher, and draft the commentary for each one. Week three: complete the first full version, hand it in for feedback, and revise to the final version. Week four: check citations and the word count, submit the file, and prepare the display by printing images, writing captions and arranging the objects so visitors can instantly see how all three connect to the prompt. The showcase is not marked, but it is a great chance to share your TOK thinking with classmates and parents, so it deserves real effort.
