Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is one of the three core components of the IB Diploma Programme. Every candidate must complete a 1600-word TOK essay and a TOK exhibition. In both assessments, examiners focus on knowledge claims: what you assert, why you are justified in asserting it, and how certain you are. This guide explains the definition, classification, evidence, certainty and writing strategies of knowledge claims in eleven sections, so you can move from knowing the term to using it for top marks.

What Is a Knowledge Claim?

A knowledge claim is a statement about the world, or about knowledge itself, that is presented as true. It answers "what is" or "why": water boils at 100 degrees Celsius under standard pressure, photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide into glucose, and the French Revolution began in 1789. To recognise a knowledge claim, check two things. First, it must be a declarative sentence whose truth can be judged, not a question or a command. Second, it must be open to support or challenge by evidence. Almost all analysis in TOK begins by rewriting a vague idea as a clear knowledge claim.

Knowledge Claims vs Knowledge Questions

The most common mistake TOK students make is confusing knowledge claims with knowledge questions. A knowledge claim is a declarative statement, such as "mathematical knowledge does not need empirical testing". A knowledge question is an open question, such as "where does the certainty of mathematical knowledge come from?" The TOK essay titles are knowledge questions, and your whole essay argues around one of them. Inside the essay, every paragraph answers the question with knowledge claims. In short: knowledge questions raise the problem, knowledge claims answer it. On exam day, first decide whether the statement in front of you is a claim or a question, then choose how to respond.

First-Order vs Second-Order Claims

TOK divides knowledge claims into two levels. First-order claims state facts about the world directly: "global temperatures are rising", "Shakespeare was active at the end of the sixteenth century". These are the direct content of each subject's knowledge. Second-order claims state something about knowledge itself: "scientific knowledge is corrigible", "the reliability of historical knowledge depends on the selection of evidence". The TOK essay and exhibition focus on second-order claims, because they ask you to step back from facts and reflect on how knowledge is produced, tested and used. When writing, first identify which level your claim belongs to, then decide how deep the argument must go.

Three Elements: Evidence, Interpretation and Judgement

A high-quality knowledge claim has three elements. The first is evidence: the facts, data or examples that support the claim, such as a set of experimental results or a historical document. The second is interpretation: the chain of reasoning that explains why the evidence supports the claim. The third is judgement: the conclusion reached after weighing evidence and counterexamples, including any limiting conditions. Many students provide evidence without interpretation, or make a judgement without evidence, and both patterns lose marks. Use the "evidence plus interpretation plus judgement" framework to check every paragraph you write.

Four Sources of Evidence

Four types of evidence are commonly used to justify a knowledge claim. The first is empirical evidence: data from observation and experiment, which the natural sciences rely on most. The second is logical evidence: conclusions reached by reasoning and proof, as in mathematics and formal logic. The third is authority: knowledge cited from experts, textbooks or official institutions, such as data from the World Health Organization. The fourth is testimony: the experiences and accounts of other people, common in historical and interview-based research. A single claim can be supported by several types together, and each type has limits: empirical evidence suffers from measurement error, authority can be outdated, and testimony can be biased.

Certainty and Hedging: Strong vs Weak Claims

Knowledge claims differ in their degree of certainty. Strong claims assert absolute certainty: "an object falling under gravity must accelerate". Weak claims acknowledge conditions and limits: "an object falling under gravity accelerates when air resistance is ignored". TOK values your awareness of certainty: is this absolute truth, high probability, or merely one interpretation? To show this awareness, use hedging language such as "probably", "tends to" and "under these conditions". Blanket words such as "necessarily", "always" and "all" make claims easy to destroy with a single counterexample, but overusing "possibly" makes you sound indecisive. Balancing certainty and commitment is one key to a top TOK grade.

How Areas of Knowledge Set Testing Standards

TOK organises knowledge into areas of knowledge: the natural sciences, the human sciences, history, the arts, mathematics, and religious and indigenous knowledge systems. Each area tests claims in its own way: mathematics relies on proof, the natural sciences on repeatable experiments, history on the interpretation of primary and secondary sources, and the arts on aesthetic judgement and contextual analysis. Do not use the testing standards of the natural sciences to judge historical claims, or vice versa. Starting your analysis from the question "what counts as good evidence in this area" immediately makes your argument more professional.

The Core Theme: Knower and Perspective

The core theme of the current TOK course is "Knowledge and the Knower", which stresses that knowledge claims are always made by particular knowers. The same evidence can produce different claims from people with different backgrounds and interests: scientists, journalists and artists understand the same event differently. A knower's identity, values, emotions and community norms all shape the claims they make, which is why the same facts can generate controversy. When writing, ask: who makes this claim, what position do they hold, and what different claim would another knower make? This awareness of perspective is a major scoring point in the TOK essay.

九、TOK 论文中的主张写作五步法 | Five Steps for Writing Claims in the TOK Essay

Writing a TOK essay can be broken into five practical steps. First, unpack the title: break the knowledge question into keywords and define the core concepts. Second, make claims: write one clear second-order knowledge claim for each point you want to make. Third, find evidence: choose concrete examples from at least two areas of knowledge, such as a scientific experiment, a historical event or an artwork. Fourth, counterargue: raise a counterexample or opposing view, then explain why your claim still holds, or how it must be modified. Fifth, conclude: answer the knowledge question directly and state the boundaries you discovered. Check every paragraph against these five steps.

十、TOK 展览:物件、主张与解说词 | The TOK Exhibition: Objects, Claims and Commentary

The TOK exhibition asks you to choose three objects, link them with one knowledge question, and write a commentary of about 300 words on each. The heart of each commentary is a knowledge claim: what view about knowledge does this object demonstrate? For example, a photograph of a chemistry experiment can support the second-order claim that "the reliability of scientific knowledge depends on repeatable observation". Markers look for three things: a close link between object and question, specific rather than vague claims, and commentary that explains the object's background and why you chose it. Prefer real objects from your own life over invented ones.

Common Mistakes and a Fix Checklist

End with a self-check list. Mistake one: writing a knowledge question as a statement; it should be an open question. Mistake two: vague claims such as "knowledge is important"; make the claim specific by saying which knowledge, under what conditions, and important to whom. Mistake three: listing evidence without interpretation; add the chain of reasoning from evidence to conclusion. Mistake four: ignoring counterexamples; discuss one opposing view actively. Mistake five: absolute wording; add proper qualifications. Go through the list one by one and reread the surrounding context after each fix. Following this process will make your knowledge claims clearer, and your TOK essay and exhibition scores will rise steadily.
