Temperature vs Heat: Two Confusing Concepts
Many IB students stumble at the very start of the thermal physics topic by confusing temperature with heat. Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of the particles inside a body and describes how hot or cold an object is; its SI unit is the kelvin (K), though degrees Celsius are common in daily life. Heat, in contrast, is a process of energy transfer: it is the energy that moves spontaneously from a hotter object to a colder one, and its unit is the joule (J). The key distinction is that temperature is a state variable, depending only on the current condition of the object, while heat is a process quantity, linked to the path of energy transfer. When you heat a cup of water, its temperature rises, but heat is not stored inside the water; what is stored is internal energy. IB exams often test this with multiple-choice questions, such as judging whether a hotter object must contain more heat. The answer is of course no, because heat is not a property an object possesses.
Internal Energy: The Sum of Particle Energies
Internal energy is another core concept in thermal physics. It is defined as the total kinetic and potential energy of all the microscopic particles inside a body. The kinetic part comes from the random thermal motion of particles: the higher the temperature, the greater their average kinetic energy. The potential part comes from the inter-particle forces, such as the attraction and repulsion between molecules. For an ideal gas, there are no intermolecular forces, so the internal energy of an ideal gas depends only on temperature and not on volume. This is a crucial deduction often tested in IB: the internal energy of an ideal gas is a single-valued function of temperature. During an isothermal expansion, the internal energy of an ideal gas does not change. Understanding this point is essential before moving on to the first law of thermodynamics, because many students wrongly treat a change in volume as a direct change in internal energy.
Q=mcΔT | Specific Heat Capacity and Q=mcΔT
Specific heat capacity describes how much energy a substance can hold per unit mass. It is defined as the heat needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of a substance by one kelvin, symbolised by c and measured in J/(kg·K). The core formula is Q=mcΔT, where Q is the heat absorbed or released, m is the mass, and ΔT is the temperature change. Water has a specific heat capacity of about 4200 J/(kg·K), far higher than most metals; copper, for instance, is only about 385 J/(kg·K). This means that if equal masses of water and copper absorb the same amount of heat, the copper temperature rises much faster. IB calculation questions frequently ask you to use Q=mcΔT to find an unknown quantity. Remember that a temperature difference is numerically identical in kelvin and Celsius, so ΔT can use either scale, but absolute temperatures must be in kelvin. Mixed-substance problems are also common: set the heat released equal to the heat absorbed and solve for the final equilibrium temperature.
Latent Heat and Phase Changes
During a phase change such as melting or boiling, the temperature stays constant while the substance still absorbs or releases a large amount of energy; this energy is called latent heat. The reason is that a phase change alters the potential energy between particles, not their kinetic energy. Latent heat is calculated with Q=mL, where L is the specific latent heat. For water, the specific latent heat of fusion is about 3.34×10^5 J/kg, while the specific latent heat of vaporisation is about 2.26×10^6 J/kg; vaporisation requires far more energy than fusion, a fact often tested in multiple choice. The graphical meaning matters too: a temperature-time graph of ice being heated shows flat plateau segments, each plateau representing a phase change at constant temperature. IB questions may ask you to find the total heat needed to turn ice at -10°C into steam at 100°C. Break the process into stages: warm the ice, melt it, warm the water, boil it; apply the correct formula at each stage and do not skip or double-count any of them.
Conduction, Convection and Radiation
Heat is transferred in three ways: conduction, convection and radiation. Conduction transfers energy through collisions between particles and through free electrons inside a solid, layer by layer, without any bulk movement of material; metals conduct well because they contain many free electrons. Convection occurs only in fluids: heated fluid expands, becomes less dense and rises, while cooler fluid sinks, setting up a circulating current. Sea breezes and the circulation of air around a radiator are classic examples. Radiation is the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves from a body surface; it needs no medium and can travel through a vacuum, which is how the Sun heat reaches the Earth. IB often sets comparison questions, for instance asking which transfer mechanism works in a vacuum; the answer is radiation only. It is also worth remembering that dark, rough surfaces absorb and emit radiation more strongly than light, smooth ones.
六、理想气体状态方程 pV=nRT | The Ideal Gas Equation pV=nRT
The ideal gas equation links pressure p, volume V, temperature T and the amount of gas n: pV=nRT, where R is the molar gas constant, about 8.31 J/(mol·K). It applies to an ideal gas, in which molecular volume is negligible, there are no intermolecular forces, and collisions are perfectly elastic. Real gases approximate this behaviour at low pressure and high temperature. An equivalent form is pV=NkT, where N is the total number of molecules and k is the Boltzmann constant, about 1.38×10^-23 J/K. IB calculation problems frequently describe a gas sealed in a container: at constant volume, pressure is proportional to absolute temperature; at constant temperature, pressure is inversely proportional to volume. Write down p1V1/T1 for the initial state and p2V2/T2 for the final state, set them equal, and solve for the unknown. Always convert temperatures to kelvin; failing to do so is the most common source of lost marks.
The Three Gas Laws
The three gas laws are simplifications of the ideal gas equation under particular constraints, and they are frequent multiple-choice targets in IB. Boyle law states that at constant temperature, the pressure and volume of a fixed mass of gas are inversely proportional, so pV is constant; the isothermal curve on a p-V graph is a hyperbola. Charles law states that at constant pressure, volume is proportional to absolute temperature, so V/T is constant. Gay-Lussac law states that at constant volume, pressure is proportional to absolute temperature, so p/T is constant. The three laws correspond to holding temperature, pressure and volume fixed respectively. Exams often group the three laws together and ask how two variables change when a third is held constant. A reliable strategy is to return to pV=nRT, cancel the quantity that is locked, and analyse the relationship between the remaining variables; this rarely goes wrong.
Kinetic Theory of Gases
Kinetic theory explains the macroscopic properties of gases from a microscopic viewpoint. The pressure a gas exerts on its container walls comes from the continuous bombardment of the walls by vast numbers of molecules; each collision transfers momentum, and the force per unit area is the pressure. Temperature measures the average translational kinetic energy of the molecules: the mean kinetic energy is proportional to absolute temperature, given by (3/2)kT. This is why absolute zero (0 K, about -273°C) is the temperature at which molecular thermal motion would ideally stop. IB often asks conceptual questions, such as whether the average speed of molecules must increase when temperature rises; the correct answer is not necessarily, because a higher temperature guarantees a larger average kinetic energy, but individual molecules may still move more slowly. Another common point is that pressure can rise because collisions become more frequent (smaller volume) or more violent (higher temperature); keep the two mechanisms distinct.
U=Q+W | The First Law of Thermodynamics
The first law of thermodynamics is the principle of energy conservation applied to thermal systems. The IB syllabus writes it as ΔU=Q+W, where ΔU is the change in internal energy, Q is the heat absorbed by the system, and W is the work done on the system. Watch the sign convention: positive Q means the system gains heat, and positive W means work is done on the system. Compressing a gas therefore gives positive W, while a gas expanding against its surroundings has negative W. Three special processes are worth memorising: in an isothermal process ΔU=0 for an ideal gas, so Q=-W; in an isovolumetric process no work is done, W=0, so ΔU=Q; in an adiabatic process there is no heat exchange, Q=0, so ΔU=W. IB questions often combine the first law with graphs, such as cyclic processes on a p-V diagram, asking whether each stage absorbs or releases heat and whether work and internal energy increase or decrease. Identify the nature of the process first, then apply the corresponding simplified equation.
Thermal physics accounts for around ten percent of the marks in IB Physics, and the question types are fairly predictable. Paper 1 multiple-choice questions focus on conceptual distinctions: temperature versus heat, internal energy versus heat, proportionality relationships in the gas laws, and the meaning of plateaus on latent heat graphs. Paper 2 structured questions typically ask for mixed-substance thermal equilibrium, staged phase-change calculations, solving the ideal gas equation, and analysing cyclic processes with the first law. Follow these exam conventions: convert every absolute temperature to kelvin; state the formula before substituting numbers; keep units complete; use Q=mL during phase changes rather than Q=mcΔT; and answer explanation questions in microscopic language, explaining pressure changes through collision frequency and average kinetic energy rather than quoting macroscopic conclusions. In the practical section, IB often tests experiments such as measuring the specific heat capacity of water or verifying Boyle law; describe ways to reduce errors, such as insulating to cut heat loss and operating slowly to maintain isothermal conditions.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Finally, here are the most common pitfalls in the thermal physics chapter so you can avoid losing easy marks. First, forgetting to convert Celsius to kelvin wrecks gas-law and ideal-gas calculations; remember T(K)=T(°C)+273.15 and convert before substituting. Second, applying Q=mcΔT during a phase change, when temperature is constant so ΔT=0 and you must use Q=mL instead. Third, mixing up the sign convention of the first law: IB writes ΔU=Q+W, so a gas doing work on its surroundings means W is negative, not positive. Fourth, assuming that higher temperature always means greater internal energy: for systems other than ideal gases, internal energy also includes molecular potential energy, so temperature alone is not enough. Fifth, answering conceptual questions from intuition instead of drawing the microscopic picture: when explaining a pressure increase, decide whether collisions have become more frequent or each collision transfers more momentum. Turn these pitfalls into a checklist and review it before the exam; you will lose far fewer marks in thermal physics.
