What Is a Vector? Scalars vs Vectors
A vector is a quantity that has both magnitude and direction, such as displacement, velocity, and force, while a scalar has only magnitude, such as distance, speed, and temperature. Displacement between two points is the classic example: to get from A to B you need to know not only how far you travel but also in which direction you travel. In IB Mathematics AA, vectors are the foundation of three-dimensional geometry; almost every solid geometry problem can be translated into vector operations. Grasping the essential difference between vectors and scalars is the prerequisite for everything that follows, and examinations frequently test this idea in short questions, such as asking whether speed is a vector or a scalar, which are easy marks when you know the definition.
Vector Notation and Basic Operations
In a coordinate plane or space a vector can be written in component form, such as a=(a1, a2) in two dimensions or a=(a1, a2, a3) in three dimensions, or as a combination of basis vectors a = a1·i + a2·j + a3·k. The magnitude of a vector is its length, written |a|, and by generalising Pythagoras we obtain |a|=√(a1²+a2²+a3²). Vector addition follows the parallelogram rule, subtraction a-b is the same as adding -b, and scalar multiplication λa changes only the length and direction of the vector, reversing its direction when λ is negative. In the exam these operations should be so familiar that you can complete them directly without drawing a diagram, since the IB calculator does not handle whole-vector arithmetic and every step must be computed by hand.
Position Vectors and Displacement Vectors
若 A、B 两点的位置向量分别为 a、b,则向量 AB 等于 b-a,方向从 A 指向 B。
A position vector describes the location of a point relative to the origin; for example, the position vector of the point P(2, 3, 4) is p=(2, 3, 4). A displacement vector describes the change from one point to another. If points A and B have position vectors a and b, then the vector AB equals b-a and points from A towards B. This formula is the starting point of almost every IB vector problem: finding a line equation or a distance nearly always begins by writing down the position vectors of two points and subtracting them. Note carefully that a position vector depends on the choice of origin, whereas a displacement vector does not; appreciating this difference prevents confusion in questions that involve changing coordinate systems.
The Dot Product and Finding Angles
点积(dot product)也叫标量积,定义为 a·b = a1·b1 + a2·b2 + a3·b3,它同时满足几何关系 a·b = |a||b|cosθ,其中 θ 是两向量的夹角。
The dot product, also called the scalar product, is defined component-wise as a·b = a1·b1 + a2·b2 + a3·b3, and it also satisfies the geometric relation a·b = |a||b|cosθ, where θ is the angle between the two vectors. Combining the two formulas gives the universal angle formula cosθ = (a·b)/(|a||b|). The result of a dot product is a scalar rather than a vector, which is the most common source of confusion for beginners. In particular, a·b=0 if and only if the two vectors are perpendicular, ignoring the zero vector, so a vanishing dot product is the standard test for perpendicularity. In the IB exam, finding angles, testing perpendicularity, and proving geometric properties all rely heavily on the dot product, making it the most frequently used operation in the whole vectors unit.
The Cross Product: Computation and Geometry
The cross product, also called the vector product, produces a vector that is perpendicular to the plane containing the original two vectors. In three dimensions the coordinates of a×b can be remembered by expanding a determinant pattern: a×b = (a2b3 - a3b2, a3b1 - a1b3, a1b2 - a2b1). The cross product has two key properties: its magnitude |a×b| = |a||b|sinθ equals the area of the parallelogram spanned by a and b, and its direction is fixed by the right-hand rule. The cross product is therefore used to find normal vectors of planes, to compute triangle areas, and to test parallelism, since a×b=0 exactly when a and b are parallel. In AA HL the cross product is guaranteed examinable content, so you must be fluent with its expansion formula.
The Vector Equation of a Line
A line in space can be written in vector form as r = a + t·d, where a is the position vector of a known point on the line, d is a direction vector, and t is a parameter. As t runs over all real numbers, r traces out the entire line. The equation can also be converted into symmetric, Cartesian form by eliminating the parameter. The key to writing a line equation is identifying one point and one direction: two points determine a line, so when two points are given, the direction vector is simply the difference of their position vectors. A common exam task is to decide whether a point lies on a line: substitute the coordinates and check whether some value of t satisfies all three components at once; if it does, the point is on the line.
The Vector Equation of a Plane
A plane has two common vector representations. The parametric form is r = a + s·u + t·v, where u and v are two non-parallel direction vectors inside the plane and s, t are parameters. The normal form is n·(r - a) = 0, which says that the segment from a known point to any point on the plane is perpendicular to the normal vector n. The easiest way to obtain a normal vector from the parametric form is the cross product n = u×v. The normal form can be rewritten as r·n = a·n, where the right-hand side is a constant usually written as d, giving the standard equation of the plane. To check whether a point lies on a plane, simply verify that its position vector satisfies the normal-form equation.
Angles Between Lines and Planes
Finding angles is one of the most frequent question types in IB spatial geometry. For two lines, the angle between their direction vectors d1 and d2 is given by cosθ = |d1·d2|/(|d1||d2|), where the absolute value guarantees an acute angle. For a line and a plane, with direction vector d and normal vector n, the angle θ satisfies sinθ = |d·n|/(|d||n|); note the sine rather than the cosine, because the line-plane angle is defined between the line and its projection onto the plane. For two planes, the angle is simply the angle between their normal vectors, cosθ = |n1·n2|/(|n1||n2|). When applying these three formulas, the critical skill is telling direction vectors apart from normal vectors; most lost marks come from substituting the wrong vector into the wrong formula.
Distances: Point to Line and Point to Plane
Distance problems are the climactic topic of the AA HL vectors unit. The distance from a point P to a line: if A is a point on the line with direction vector d, the distance is |AP × d|/|d|, the magnitude of the cross product divided by the magnitude of the direction vector. The distance from a point P to a plane: if the plane passes through A with normal vector n, the distance is |n·(AP)|/|n|, which is the absolute value of the projection of the connecting vector onto the normal direction. When two planes are parallel, their separation equals the distance from any point of one plane to the other. Mastering these two formulas, together with the cross and dot products, equips you to solve almost every distance question in solid geometry.
十、IB常见题型与考试技巧 | Common IB Question Types and Exam Tips
The common question types in IB Mathematics AA vectors include: testing whether three points are collinear or four points are coplanar, where collinearity means the direction vectors are proportional and coplanarity means one vector can be written as a linear combination of two non-parallel vectors; finding intersections of two lines or recognising skew lines, where the shortest distance between skew lines uses the common perpendicular direction obtained from a cross product; computing triangle and parallelogram areas, which are half or the whole of a cross-product magnitude; and proving geometric properties, such as showing a line is perpendicular to a plane by proving its direction vector is parallel to the normal vector. For revision, derive every formula in this chapter yourself once, then practise vector questions from past papers intensively. Pay special attention to questions involving parameters, since parameters increase the computation load sharply and are the main factor that separates top scores from the rest.
