The de Broglie Hypothesis: The Birth of Matter Waves
In 1924, the French physicist Louis de Broglie proposed a bold idea in his doctoral thesis: light behaves as a wave in double-slit experiments but as a stream of particles in the photoelectric effect, so could particles with non-zero rest mass, such as electrons, also behave as waves? He argued that every moving particle is accompanied by a wave, which we now call a matter wave or de Broglie wave. At the time the hypothesis had no direct experimental support and many physicists dismissed it as a purely theoretical exercise. Yet this single idea extended wave-particle duality from light to all matter and became a crucial step in the birth of quantum mechanics. It remains the starting point of the wave-particle duality topic in the CIE A-Level Physics syllabus.
二、波长公式 λ=h/p:动量与波长的定量关系 | The de Broglie Wavelength Formula: A Quantitative Link
de Broglie generalised the photon relation p=h/λ to all particles and obtained the matter wave equation λ=h/p=h/(mv), where h is the Planck constant with a value of 6.63×10⁻³⁴ J·s, m is the mass of the particle and v is its speed. The formula reveals a simple rule: the larger the momentum, the shorter the wavelength; the smaller the momentum, the longer the wavelength. Since p=mv, a heavier particle moving at the same speed has a shorter wavelength, which is exactly why macroscopic objects never show observable wave behaviour. In exams, candidates typically find the speed first from the kinetic energy relation E_k=½mv² or from acceleration by an electric field qV=½mv², then substitute into the de Broglie formula; this two-step path is the standard solution.
Electron Diffraction: Direct Evidence of Wave Nature
In 1927, the British physicist George Thomson passed a beam of fast electrons through an extremely thin metal foil, such as gold or aluminium, and observed bright and dark concentric rings on a fluorescent screen behind it, now called electron diffraction rings. Diffraction is a wave phenomenon and only occurs when the wavelength is comparable to the size of the obstacle. The spacing between atoms in a metal crystal is of the order of 10⁻¹⁰ m, the same order as the de Broglie wavelength of electrons, so the electron beam is diffracted by the crystal lattice and produces a ring pattern. If electrons were treated as classical particles, the formation of these rings could not be explained. Together with the Davisson-Germer experiment, this work provided conclusive experimental evidence for the de Broglie hypothesis, and Thomson shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physics with Davisson.
The Davisson-Germer Experiment: Scattering by a Crystal Lattice
At almost the same time, the American physicists Clinton Davisson and Lester Germer were studying the scattering of electrons by the surface of a nickel crystal at Bell Labs when they accidentally found that the number of reflected electrons showed regular maxima and minima as the accelerating voltage changed, exactly matching the pattern of X-ray diffraction by crystals. Using the atomic spacing of the nickel crystal as a natural diffraction grating, they measured the wavelength of the electron wave and found it agreed with the prediction of the de Broglie formula within experimental error. This result is regarded as the first quantitative verification of the matter wave hypothesis. For CIE candidates, four elements of the experiment must be remembered: the electron gun accelerates the electrons, the nickel crystal acts as the diffraction grating, the detector measures electron intensity at different angles, and the accelerating voltage changes the electron wavelength and therefore the diffraction pattern.
Electron Double-Slit Interference: One Electron at a Time
In 1961, the German physicist Claus Jönsson performed the double-slit experiment with electrons for the first time. Even more striking is that when electrons are fired one at a time, so that only a single electron passes through the apparatus at any moment, an interference pattern of bright and dark fringes still builds up gradually on the screen. The position of each individual electron seems random, but once many electrons accumulate, the fringe pattern is identical to that of light. This shows that each electron interferes with itself; the wave nature is not a collective effect of many electrons interacting, but an intrinsic property of a single electron. The brightness of the fringes corresponds exactly to the probability of the electron appearing at each position, which is the probabilistic interpretation of the wave function: the matter wave describes the probability distribution of finding the particle, not a deformation of the particle itself.
Why Macroscopic Objects Show No Observable Wave Nature
According to λ=h/(mv), a bullet of mass 0.01 kg travelling at 300 m/s has a de Broglie wavelength of about 2.2×10⁻³⁴ m, more than twenty orders of magnitude smaller than the size of an atomic nucleus, far beyond the reach of any experimental technique. In contrast, an electron has a mass of only 9.11×10⁻³¹ kg, and after acceleration through 100 V its wavelength is about 1.2×10⁻¹⁰ m, comparable to the spacing between atoms in a crystal, so diffraction is clearly visible. Wave nature applies to all matter, but the wavelengths of macroscopic objects are so tiny that they can be ignored, and classical mechanics remains the most convenient tool for describing the everyday world. This explains why we never observe objects bending around obstacles like waves in daily experience.
The Electron Microscope: A Practical Application of Short Wavelengths
The resolution of an optical microscope is limited by diffraction and cannot reveal structures smaller than about half the wavelength of light. Visible light has wavelengths of roughly 400-700 nm, so an optical microscope can resolve details of only about 200 nm at best. When accelerated through a few thousand volts, electrons have de Broglie wavelengths of about 0.01 nm, roughly fifty thousand times shorter than visible light, so an electron microscope achieves far higher resolution and can even image individual atoms. This is why electron microscopes are essential for observing viruses and internal cell structures in biology, and for analysing crystal defects in materials science. A common exam question asks why an electron microscope has higher resolution than an optical one; the core of the answer is that the de Broglie wavelength of electrons is much shorter than visible light, so the diffraction limit is much lower.
Wave-Particle Duality and the Principle of Complementarity
Wave-particle duality means that microscopic particles show wave behaviour in some experiments and particle behaviour in others; the two pictures are not contradictory but are two aspects of the same entity. The Danish physicist Niels Bohr proposed the principle of complementarity: the wave picture and the particle picture complement each other, and the experimental arrangement determines which aspect we observe. An electron passing through double slits behaves as a wave, yet it hits the screen as an individual particle. Light behaves in the same way: interference and diffraction demonstrate its wave nature, while the photoelectric effect and Compton scattering demonstrate its particle nature. The CIE syllabus requires candidates to identify which property a given experiment demonstrates; interference, diffraction and polarisation are evidence of wave nature, while the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering and collisional energy transfer are evidence of particle nature. Such classification questions appear almost every year.
九、CIE 考试常考题型与解题步骤 | Typical CIE Exam Questions and Solution Steps
Electron wave nature appears in three main types of CIE A-Level questions. The first is conceptual: explain how electron diffraction rings prove the wave nature of electrons, with the answer mentioning that diffraction is a wave phenomenon, that the electron wavelength is comparable to the atomic spacing, and that the pattern can be explained by wave theory but not by a particle model. The second is numerical: find the de Broglie wavelength from an accelerating voltage or kinetic energy, using qV=½mv² to find the speed and then λ=h/(mv), remembering to convert mass into kilograms. The third is comparative: compare the wavelengths of electrons and photons, or the resolutions of electron and optical microscopes. Common data include the electron mass 9.11×10⁻³¹ kg and the Planck constant 6.63×10⁻³⁴ J·s, both printed on the front of the paper, so candidates do not need to memorise them.
Common Pitfalls: Momentum, Kinetic Energy and Wavelength
Students commonly make three types of errors in electron wave calculations. First, confusing speed with velocity and writing momentum as p=mv²; the correct definition is p=mv, while kinetic energy is E_k=½mv², and the two differ by a factor of the speed. Second, missing unit conversions: the electron mass 9.11×10⁻³¹ kg is already tiny, and if mass is written in grams or energy is left in electronvolts instead of being converted to joules, the result is wrong by several orders of magnitude; the conversion 1 eV=1.6×10⁻¹⁹ J must be mastered. Third, ignoring the inverse relationship between wavelength and momentum and wrongly thinking that a higher accelerating voltage gives a longer wavelength; in reality a higher voltage gives electrons a greater speed and momentum, so the wavelength becomes shorter. Remembering these three points prevents most calculation errors.
十一、与光子公式 E=hf 的对比辨析 | Comparing with Photon Relations E=hf and p=h/λ
Both photons and electrons obey wave-particle duality, but the formulas describing them focus on different quantities. A photon is a massless particle moving at the speed of light; its energy is E=hf and its momentum is p=h/λ=E/c, and since its mass is zero, neither p=mv nor E_k=½mv² applies. An electron has rest mass, its energy is mainly kinetic, and the de Broglie formula λ=h/(mv) uses mass and speed directly. Another common comparison: at the same frequency a photon has more energy and a shorter wavelength than an electron; with the same energy, an electron has a much longer wavelength than a photon because its large mass implies a small speed. CIE questions often ask candidates to compare the wavelengths or momenta of electrons and photons; the key is to identify which quantity is shared before applying the relevant formula.
The Complete Chain: Hypothesis, Evidence and Applications
The whole topic can be linked into one main thread: de Broglie proposed the matter wave hypothesis, with the wavelength given quantitatively by λ=h/p; the Davisson-Germer experiment and Thomson's electron diffraction experiment provided the experimental evidence; the single-electron double-slit experiment revealed that wave nature is an intrinsic property of a single particle; macroscopic objects have extremely short wavelengths, so wave effects are invisible in daily life; the electron microscope turns the advantage of short wavelengths into a practical application; and Bohr's complementarity principle unifies the wave and particle pictures theoretically. When answering, candidates only need to follow this chain, and any question starting from the hypothesis, the evidence, the calculation or the application can be mapped to the relevant knowledge point. Before the exam, it is advisable to copy out the three formulas of this topic (λ=h/p, E=hf, p=h/λ) together with their applicable objects, and practise the electron diffraction and photoelectric effect questions in past papers, which is enough to secure the marks of this topic.
