What is Fermat's Last Theorem?
Fermat's Last Theorem is one of the most famous statements in number theory. It says that when the integer n is greater than 2, the equation x^n + y^n = z^n has no positive integer solutions. In other words, no three positive whole numbers can satisfy x cubed plus y cubed equals z cubed, and the same holds for fourth powers, fifth powers and every higher power. The statement is so simple that a middle school student can read it, yet it puzzled the world's greatest mathematicians for 350 years until Andrew Wiles finally proved it in 1994.
Fermat's Famous Margin Note
In 1637, the French lawyer and mathematician Pierre de Fermat was studying Arithmetica, a work by the ancient Greek mathematician Diophantus, when he scribbled this conjecture in the margin of the book, adding a line that would echo through history: "I have discovered a truly marvellous proof of this, but this margin is too narrow to contain it." Over the next three centuries countless mathematicians took up the challenge. Names such as Euler, Sophie Germain, Kummer, Taniyama and Shimura are all tied to this long road, and the "unwritable proof" became the most famous mystery in the history of mathematics.
Why Mathematicians Were Obsessed for 350 Years
Mathematicians were obsessed with Fermat's Last Theorem first because of the huge contrast between its simple statement and its enormous difficulty, and that contrast is itself a powerful attraction. Second, every failed proof route produced new mathematical tools: Kummer created ideal number theory for this purpose, and Wiles's work rests on elliptic curves and modern modular form theory. In a sense, Fermat's Last Theorem acts as a touchstone that continuously tests the development level of number theory and of mathematics as a whole, and every attempt to conquer it pushed mathematics forward.
四、方程 x^n + y^n = z^n 的奇妙断层 | The Strange Gap in the Equation x^n + y^n = z^n
Why is this equation so special? When n equals 1, the equation x plus y equals z obviously has infinitely many integer solutions. When n equals 2, the equation takes the form of the Pythagorean theorem: x squared plus y squared equals z squared, which describes the sides of a right-angled triangle and again has infinitely many integer solutions, such as 3, 4, 5 and 5, 12, 13. But the moment n moves from 2 to 3, the number of integer solutions drops from infinity to zero with no transition in between, and this shocking gap puzzled mathematicians for centuries.
五、n=4 的特殊证明:费马的无穷递降法 | The Case n=4 and the Method of Infinite Descent
Fermat himself proved the case n equals 4 using his own method of infinite descent. The idea is this: first suppose the equation has a solution in positive integers; then, through clever algebraic manipulation, construct a smaller positive integer solution from it; repeating the process produces an infinitely decreasing sequence of positive integers, which is impossible because positive integers cannot decrease forever, so a contradiction appears and the assumption collapses. This technique of "assume existence, then construct something smaller" later became a classical weapon in number theory.
六、欧拉与 n=3 的证明:代数数论的开端 | Euler's Proof for n=3 and the Birth of Algebraic Number Theory
Around 1753, the Swiss mathematician Euler supplied a proof for the case n equals 3. He worked with an extension of the complex numbers, numbers of the form a plus b times the square root of minus one, factored the original equation, and derived a contradiction. Although Euler's proof contained a small gap that was later repaired by other mathematicians, it opened up the direction of algebraic number theory: to prove a conclusion about integers, first move into a larger number system, look for structure there, and then pull the conclusion back to the integer world. This idea had a lasting influence.
Kummer and the Theory of Ideal Numbers
In the mid-19th century, while attempting to prove Fermat's Last Theorem, the German mathematician Kummer discovered that unique factorisation fails in general rings of algebraic integers, so the old methods of factorisation broke down completely. To bypass this obstacle he invented "ideal numbers", lifting number theory from concrete numbers to the level of ideals and thereby restoring a generalised form of unique factorisation. Although Kummer never proved the full theorem, he founded ideal theory from this work and settled the vast majority of prime cases, and these results directly gave birth to modern algebraic number theory.
Elliptic Curves and the Taniyama-Shimura Conjecture
In the 1950s, the Japanese mathematicians Taniyama and Shimura proposed a startling conjecture: every elliptic curve corresponds to a modular form. An elliptic curve is defined by an equation such as y squared equals x cubed plus a x plus b, while a modular form is a complex function with a high degree of symmetry, and the two objects seem completely unrelated. In 1986, Frey and Ribet proved that if a counterexample to Fermat's Last Theorem existed, one could construct an elliptic curve that violates the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture. This result tied the two worlds tightly together and ignited Wiles's determination to conquer the problem.
Wiles's Proof: Bridging Two Mathematical Worlds
In June 1993, Andrew Wiles announced a proof of Fermat's Last Theorem at the University of Cambridge, but reviewers later found a gap in the argument. After more than a year of intense effort, he repaired the gap in 1994 with his student Richard Taylor, and the paper was formally published in 1995. Wiles's proof runs to more than one hundred pages and connects elliptic curves, modular forms, Galois representations and other deep fields, and its core is proving that the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture holds for semistable elliptic curves. He received a special Fields Medal and many other honours for this achievement.
The Modern Significance of Fermat's Last Theorem
The significance of Fermat's Last Theorem goes far beyond an isolated mathematical statement. The tools developed to prove it, including ideal theory, modular forms and Galois representation theory, are now core languages of modern mathematics and find practical applications in cryptography and coding theory. It is also a microcosm of how mathematical research has changed: from an individual scribbling a conjecture in a book margin, to global collaboration, to computer-assisted verification of complex arguments, and that journey itself is one of the most precious parts of mathematical culture.
十一、A-Level 学生如何理解这一定理 | How A-Level Students Can Understand This Theorem
For students currently studying A-Level mathematics, understanding Fermat's Last Theorem does not require mastering the full proof; the more important goal is to appreciate its way of thinking. First, comparing the Pythagorean theorem with Fermat's Last Theorem gives an intuitive sense of how a small change in conditions can completely change the conclusion. Second, the method of infinite descent captures the essence of proof by contradiction, which appears regularly in A-Level pure mathematics. Finally, Wiles's story reminds us that apparently useless pure mathematics research may one day become the foundation that reshapes an entire discipline.
Common Confusion: Last Theorem vs Little Theorem
费马小定理说的是:如果 p 是素数,且 a 不能被 p 整除,那么 a 的 p 次方减 a 一定能被 p 整除,等价地说,a 的 p 减 1 次方除以 p 的余数是 1。
Many beginners confuse Fermat's Last Theorem with Fermat's Little Theorem, but they are two completely different statements. Fermat's Little Theorem says that if p is a prime and a is not divisible by p, then a to the power of p minus a is always divisible by p; equivalently, a to the power of p minus 1 leaves a remainder of 1 when divided by p. It has been fully proved and is the theoretical foundation of the RSA public-key cryptosystem. Fermat's Last Theorem, by contrast, concerns the solutions of the equation x^n + y^n = z^n; the objects of study are different, and the difficulty is worlds apart. Remembering this distinction prevents confusion in both exams and reading.
