Capacitance is a key topic in the electricity section of the IB Physics course and a bridge linking electric fields, circuits and energy. This article covers the definition of capacitance, the parallel plate formula, the exponential behaviour of charging and discharging, the time constant and the energy storage equations, helping students master the core ideas and typical question types of this chapter.
What Is a Capacitor?
A capacitor is a circuit component that stores electric charge and energy. It consists of two metal plates placed close together but separated by an insulating material. When a voltage is applied across the plates, positive charge accumulates on one plate and an equal amount of negative charge on the other, creating an electric field between them. The ability to store charge is called capacitance, defined as C = Q / V, where Q is the charge stored on either plate and V is the potential difference across the plates. The SI unit of capacitance is the farad (F), equal to one coulomb per volt. Because one farad is extremely large, practical capacitors are rated in microfarads (μF), nanofarads (nF) and picofarads (pF).
The Microscopic Mechanism of Charge Storage
At the microscopic level, charging a capacitor is simply the movement of electrons around the circuit. When the positive terminal of a battery connects to one plate, electrons are pulled away from that plate, leaving it positively charged; the negative terminal pushes electrons onto the other plate, leaving it negatively charged. Because the dielectric between the plates is an insulator, electrons cannot cross directly, so charge is trapped on the plate surfaces in the form of electric field energy. A larger plate area and a smaller separation allow more charge to be stored. The field between the plates is approximately uniform, with field strength E = V / d, which is the starting point for deriving the parallel plate capacitor formulas.
The Parallel Plate Capacitor Formula
The parallel plate capacitor is the simplest and most important capacitor model. Its capacitance is determined purely by geometry: C = ε0 A / d, where A is the overlapping area of the plates, d is the plate separation, and ε0 is the permittivity of free space (about 8.85 × 10^-12 F/m). The formula shows that capacitance is proportional to plate area and inversely proportional to plate separation. Increasing the area or reducing the separation both raise the capacitance. When a dielectric fills the gap, the formula becomes C = εr ε0 A / d, where εr is the relative permittivity, which measures how much the material enhances charge storage. IB questions frequently ask students to compare capacitance values for different geometries using this formula.
Why Dielectrics Increase Capacitance
When a dielectric such as mica, ceramic or an electrolyte is inserted between the plates, its molecules become polarised: the positive and negative charge centres are pulled apart by the field, inducing bound charges of opposite sign on the material surfaces. These induced charges weaken the effective field between the plates, so more charge can be stored at the same voltage and the capacitance rises. Dielectrics bring two extra benefits. First, the insulating layer allows the plates to be placed extremely close together, which greatly increases capacitance. Second, it raises the maximum working voltage before breakdown occurs. The larger the relative permittivity εr, the stronger the effect: water has εr around 80, far above air's value of 1.
The Charging Process
Connect a capacitor, a resistor and a battery in series to form an RC charging circuit. The instant the switch closes, the plates carry no charge and the voltage across the capacitor is zero, so the current is at its maximum, equal to the EMF divided by the resistance (I0 = V0 / R). As charge accumulates, the plate voltage rises, the gap between it and the battery EMF narrows, and the charging current falls exponentially. During charging the voltage grows according to V = V0 (1 - e^(-t/RC)) while the current decays as I = I0 e^(-t/RC). In theory the capacitor never becomes fully charged; in practice it is treated as fully charged after about five time constants.
The Discharging Process
放电时电荷、电压和电流都按同一指数规律衰减:Q = Q0 e^(-t/RC),V = V0 e^(-t/RC),I = I0 e^(-t/RC)。
When a charged capacitor is connected to a resistor with the battery removed, it begins to discharge. During discharge the charge, voltage and current all decay with the same exponential law: Q = Q0 e^(-t/RC), V = V0 e^(-t/RC) and I = I0 e^(-t/RC). The current flows in the opposite direction to charging and falls monotonically. The discharge curve is an exponential decay that starts from the initial value and approaches zero asymptotically, never quite reaching zero. The IB syllabus requires students to sketch and interpret the Q-t, V-t and I-t graphs for both processes, in particular reading off initial values, half-life or the time constant from a graph.
七、时间常数 RC 的物理意义 | The Time Constant RC
The time constant τ = RC is the key parameter that describes how fast charging and discharging proceed, and its unit is the second. Physically, it is the time needed for the charge (or voltage, or current) to fall to 37% of its initial value (1/e) during discharge, or for the voltage to rise to 63% of its final value (1 - 1/e) during charging. A larger τ means slower charge and discharge; a smaller τ means faster response. After each additional time constant, the remaining change shrinks by the same fraction, so after five time constants less than 1% of the initial charge remains and the process is considered complete. Increasing either the resistance or the capacitance lengthens the time constant.
Energy Stored in a Capacitor
During charging the battery does work moving charge from one plate to the other against the electric field, and this work is stored as electric field energy. Because the voltage rises steadily while charge is being transferred, the average transfer voltage is half the final voltage, giving stored energy E = (1/2) Q V. Combining this with C = Q / V yields two equivalent forms: E = (1/2) C V² and E = Q² / (2C). These show that stored energy grows with capacitance and with the square of the voltage, mirroring the resistive power formula P = V² / R. IB exams often ask students to find the energy from the area under a V-Q graph.
Energy Loss During Charging
A result that students often overlook is that when a battery charges a capacitor, only half of the energy supplied by the battery ends up stored in the capacitor; the other half is dissipated as heat in the circuit resistance. This 50/50 split is independent of the resistance value, because the energy flow during charging is fixed by the exponential behaviour. If a charged capacitor is short-circuited, the stored energy is also entirely converted to heat. This conclusion appears frequently in IB discussion questions: candidates must account for the energy going half into the electric field and half into heating the resistor. For higher storage efficiency, charging to a lower voltage or using alternative storage technologies is required.
Applications of Capacitors
Capacitors are everywhere in real devices. A camera flash charges a large capacitor slowly and then discharges it in a burst, releasing a huge current for an instant to light the flash tube. A smoothing capacitor in a power supply sits across the rectifier output and uses charge-discharge buffering to flatten the pulsating DC into a steadier voltage. Timing circuits exploit the RC time constant to control delays, such as intermittent wiper settings and the flashing rate of indicator lights. Capacitors also block DC while passing AC, so they are widely used for coupling and filtering in audio circuits. The hundreds of ceramic and tantalum capacitors on a phone or computer motherboard are everyday applications of these same principles.
In CIE IB Physics exams, capacitance appears in Paper 1 multiple-choice questions, Paper 2 short-answer and calculation questions, and Paper 3 practical work. Typical question types include: reading a Q-V or V-t graph to find capacitance and energy; calculating the time constant from given R and C values and sketching the corresponding charge-discharge curve; using the parallel plate formula to predict how capacitance changes when plate area, separation or the dielectric is altered; and processing experimental data, such as voltage readings taken at fixed intervals, to determine the time constant. When answering, always write the formula before substituting values, watch unit conversions (μF to F, kΩ to Ω), and quote a sensible number of significant figures.
Common Mistakes and Revision Tips
The most common mistakes include confusing the directions in which charge, voltage and current change during charging versus discharging; mixing up the definition C = Q / V with the parallel plate formula; treating the time constant as the time to fully charge or discharge (in reality about 5τ is needed); dropping the factor of 1/2 when calculating energy; and sketching curves that miss the correct initial value or asymptote. For revision, first derive the charging and discharging differential equations by hand to understand where the exponential comes from; then draw the Q-t, V-t and I-t graphs independently and mark the time constant on each; finally work through past exam questions on graphs and calculations, checking units and significant figures at every step.
