What Is Data Presentation?
Data presentation is a foundational skill in the statistics strand of IB Mathematics. In both Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Mathematics Applications and Interpretation (AI), students must transform raw data into meaningful charts and diagrams. Raw numbers carry little meaning on their own; only after sorting, grouping, and visualising do they reveal trends, allow comparisons, and expose outliers. The IB course requires you not only to draw graphs but also to interpret them: Where is the median? How spread out are the values? Are two variables related? At its heart, data presentation turns numbers into a story, and IB examiners reward candidates who can read conclusions from a display and express them in precise statistical language. Mastering this skill secures the opening marks of almost every statistics question.
Stem-and-Leaf Diagrams for Small Data Sets
A stem-and-leaf diagram is a classic tool for small data sets, typically up to about thirty values. Each number is split into a stem (the tens digit) and a leaf (the units digit), so 24 becomes a stem of 2 with a leaf of 4. Its great advantage is that it does two jobs at once: it orders the data while preserving every original value, so the median, quartiles and mode can be read directly from the diagram without returning to the raw list. When drawing one, leaves must be arranged in ascending order, stems should increase downwards, and each leaf occupies one digit width. IB questions often ask you to reconstruct the original data from a diagram or to complete missing leaves. Common mark losses include forgetting the key (for example, Leaf 1 unit = 1) and misaligning leaves. Remember that stem-and-leaf diagrams suit small samples; once the data set grows large, a histogram or box plot becomes a better choice.
Frequency Tables and Grouped Data
When a data set is large or continuous, grouping the values into class intervals and recording them in a frequency table is the standard approach. A frequency table lists each interval and the number of data points falling inside it. In IB exams you typically need to do four things: complete the frequencies from raw data, estimate the mean using midpoints multiplied by frequencies, identify the modal class, and locate the interval containing the median. The key word here is estimate: once data is grouped, the original values are lost, so every calculation is approximate, and you must write estimate or use an approximation sign in your answer. Interval notation also matters, since 10 ≤ x < 20 and 10-19 assign the upper boundary differently, which changes the frequencies. For revision, work through one raw data set end to end: group it, build the table, estimate the mean, find the modal class. Once the process is automatic, the exam feels far less stressful.
Histograms for Continuous Data
A histogram is the main diagram for displaying the distribution of continuous data, and it differs fundamentally from a bar chart: bars in a bar chart have gaps because they represent categorical data, while the columns of a histogram touch because the data is continuous, and area represents frequency. When class widths differ, the vertical axis must show frequency density (frequency divided by class width) rather than raw frequency, a point IB exams test frequently. When reading a histogram, you estimate the median from the position where half the total area lies, identify the modal class as the tallest column, and use the overall shape (symmetric, right-skewed or left-skewed) to describe the data. When drawing, keep the horizontal scale continuous, leave no gaps between columns, and make sure each column's area matches its frequency. Many students lose marks by plotting frequency as column height, especially when the question deliberately uses unequal intervals. Hold on to the area principle and histogram questions become reliable marks.
Box-and-Whisker Plots and the Five-Number Summary
A box-and-whisker plot summarises a distribution with five numbers: the minimum, the lower quartile (Q1), the median (Q2), the upper quartile (Q3) and the maximum. Draw a number line, mark the five values, add a box from Q1 to Q3 with whiskers to the minimum and maximum. The box length shows the spread of the middle 50 percent, while the median position indicates symmetry. IB questions often ask you to compare two data sets: which is more concentrated, which has the higher median, and whether outliers exist, usually judged by the 1.5 times interquartile range rule. Box plots pack much information into a quick drawing, making them easy marks in IB statistics.
Cumulative Frequency Graphs and the Median
A cumulative frequency graph is the best tool for finding the median and quartiles of grouped data. Plot each upper boundary against the cumulative frequency and join the points with a smooth S-shaped curve called an ogive. To find the median, locate half the total frequency, draw a horizontal line to the curve, then drop vertically to read the value. The lower quartile uses one quarter of the total frequency and the upper quartile three quarters. Percentiles can also be read, for example the 90th percentile is the value below which 90 percent of the data lies. Check that the vertical axis starts at zero and the curve ends at the total frequency, two classic sources of careless errors.
Scatter Diagrams and Correlation Strength
When you want to study the relationship between two variables, a scatter diagram is the first choice. The overall pattern of points reveals direction and strength: a trend from bottom left to top right means positive correlation, top left to bottom right negative correlation, and random scatter little correlation. Points hugging a straight line show strong correlation. IB questions typically ask you to draw the diagram, describe direction and strength, fit a line of best fit and use it for prediction. Interpolation within the data range is reliable, while extrapolation can be misleading, so mention this limitation. Scatter diagrams also expose outliers. Always state both direction and strength in your description.
答题时提一句"correlation does not imply causation",往往就是加分点。
Pearson's correlation coefficient r quantifies the correlation in a scatter diagram as a number between -1 and 1, a key topic in IB Mathematics AI. An r of 1 means perfect positive correlation, -1 perfect negative correlation, and 0 no linear correlation. Note that r measures only linear relationships: a perfect curved relationship can still give r close to zero. Since calculations are done on a calculator or GDC, exams focus on interpretation: given an r value, state direction and strength, or estimate r from a diagram. Another frequent topic is the difference between correlation and causation, since the link may be coincidental or driven by a third variable. Mentioning that correlation does not imply causation often secures extra marks.
Variance and Standard Deviation as Spread Measures
Data presentation concerns not only the centre of a distribution, measured by the mean and median, but also its spread, and variance and standard deviation are the standard tools. The standard deviation is the square root of the variance and shares the same units as the data, making it the more common measure. You may obtain it from a calculator or compute it by hand, so know both formulas: the population and sample versions differ in their denominators (n and n minus 1). A smaller standard deviation means more concentrated data. When comparing data sets with similar means but different standard deviations, one is clearly more consistent. In the AA course, the standard deviation combines with the normal distribution through the 68-95-99.7 rule for data within one, two and three standard deviations of the mean.
Choosing the Right Data Display
IB exams increasingly test method selection: given a data set and a purpose, you must decide which display is appropriate. Use a bar chart or pie chart for categorical data, a stem-and-leaf diagram for small numerical samples, a histogram for large continuous data sets, a box plot to compare distributions or spot outliers, a cumulative frequency graph for the median and quartiles of grouped data, and a scatter diagram for the relationship between two variables. Name the chart and give a reason in your answer. The question may also show an inappropriate display and ask you to evaluate it, such as a pie chart for continuous data. Choosing the right diagram and justifying it is one of the most cost-effective scoring opportunities in this topic.
十一、IB考试中的常见陷阱 | Common Pitfalls in IB Statistics Exams
Marks in statistics questions are usually lost to careless details rather than a lack of understanding. Check the required decimal places or significant figures after computing means and standard deviations. Misassigning the upper boundary of a grouped interval corrupts the frequencies. Calculations from grouped data are estimates, so write estimate in your answer. A stem-and-leaf diagram without its unit key or a histogram whose vertical axis omits frequency density will lose marks. Avoid confusing correlation with causation in written answers. Mixing up sample and population settings on the GDC corrupts every output, and a box plot must sit on a properly scaled number line. Turning these traps into a checklist is an effective way to cut careless losses.
Effective Revision and Practice Strategies
An effective revision strategy for data presentation has three steps: understand, draw, and interpret. First, understand which display suits which type of data and purpose. Second, draw: work through past papers and draw stem-and-leaf diagrams, histograms, box plots and cumulative frequency graphs until they feel automatic. Third, practise interpretation: for every diagram, write three sentences describing its centre, spread and shape, then compare your wording with the mark scheme. Master the GDC statistics functions, including data entry, one-variable statistics, regression and correlation, to save time in the exam. In the final stretch, do timed past-paper questions, since one statistics question usually combines several skills. Keep the trap checklist and formula card close by, and tick off each item as you master it.
