A-Level
In A-Level Geography, case studies are the raw material for almost every extended-response question. Whether the topic is natural hazards, urbanisation, globalisation or climate change, examiners expect you to support your arguments with specific, named examples. Looking at the mark schemes of boards such as CAIE and Edexcel, the gap between an A and an A* rarely comes from knowing theory, but from choosing precise cases, quoting accurate data, and analysing at depth. One well-selected and skilfully used case can simultaneously hit the knowledge, application and analysis criteria, making it the highest-return revision investment you can make.
Choosing Case Studies: Scale and Contrast
Top-band answers rarely rely on a single case. Mark schemes reward candidates who show understanding across different scales: local, such as a specific city district; national, such as Bangladesh's flood management; and international, such as the Paris Agreement. Follow three principles when choosing cases. First, make scales complementary: one case supplies small-scale detail, the other provides the wider context. Second, build in contrast: pairing the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand, a developed country that recovered quickly, with the Haiti earthquake, a developing country that recovered slowly, turns comparison itself into an argument. Third, stay close to your syllabus: prefer examples that appear in your textbook and specification so you reduce the risk of misremembering facts.
The Case Study Memory Framework: Facts, Figures and Timelines
Trying to memorise a case study in one go is a recipe for confusion. Instead, organise every case into three columns. Facts: the location, date and type of event. Figures: casualties, economic losses, government spending and recovery times; the more specific the number, the more persuasive it is. Timeline: key points across the three phases of prevention, response and recovery. Take Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the Philippines in 2013: official figures record roughly 6,300 deaths and around 13 billion US dollars in damage, with reconstruction stretching over several years. A facts-plus-figures-plus-timeline bundle like this is ready to deploy in the exam hall.
For extended answers, structure every paragraph with PEEL. Point: state your claim clearly, for example that flood risk in Bangladesh is amplified by its population density. Evidence: follow immediately with case evidence, giving specific places, dates and data. Explanation: explain why, setting out the causal chain; this is where the analysis marks are won. Link: tie the paragraph back to the key words of the question and lead naturally into the next point. Many candidates write only Point and Evidence, dropping the Explanation and Link, which turns the answer into a list of facts and caps the grade in the middle bands. All four steps are necessary.
Linking Case Studies to Core Concepts and Theory
Case studies are the evidence; theory is the skeleton, and the two must be combined. For an urban regeneration question, the theory might be the concentric zone model or gentrification, and the case could be the redevelopment of King's Cross station in London or Xintiandi in Shanghai. In your answer, first state the theoretical concept, then use the case to confirm or challenge it, and finally show how the case refines the theory. Gentrification theory suggests that middle-class arrival pushes up house prices, but the East London case shows that some original residents received compensation through resettlement policy, demonstrating that government intervention can soften the process. This theory-plus-case-plus-refinement pattern is a hallmark of A* answers.
Command words decide the direction of your answer, and misreading them is the most wasteful way to lose marks. Explain requires you to trace cause and effect, focusing on why something happens. Evaluate requires judgement: you must weigh strengths against weaknesses in a balanced structure. Discuss asks for multiple perspectives leading to a reasoned conclusion. Assess is similar to Evaluate but emphasises judgements of importance. Before writing, spend thirty seconds circling the command word and noting what it demands: explain causes, evaluate merits, or discuss multiple angles. Your structure and paragraph weighting should follow the command word throughout.
Using Statistics and Quotations Effectively
More data is not better; the right data is what counts. Attach one or two core figures to each piece of evidence, such as the estimated 220,000 deaths in the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and always give the source context, for example according to a 2015 UN report. Avoid stringing together numbers without sources, since examiners will doubt your accuracy. A more powerful technique is dynamic comparison: place pre-event and post-event figures side by side, or figures from different countries side by side, and the comparison itself becomes analysis. Bangladesh lost thousands of people to major floods in the 1980s, yet by the 2010s early-warning systems had cut deaths in single floods to a few hundred; that contrast directly proves the effectiveness of mitigation measures.
Common Mark-Losing Mistakes: Reciting Is Not Answering
The answer type examiners dislike most is the case-study dump: writing out a memorised case from start to finish without engaging with the question. Three mistakes are common. First, a mismatch between case and question: the question asks about management strategies but you describe causes. Second, description without analysis: figures are listed but no causal explanation follows. Third, scale misalignment: the question demands an international example and you supply only a local one. The remedy is simple: after each case-study paragraph, check whether it directly addresses the key words of the question, and if not, add a linking sentence of analysis immediately. A case study is a tool, not the answer itself.
Efficient Revision: Mind Maps and Flashcards
Do not revise case studies by memorising the textbook line by line. Two tools work far better. A mind map puts a theme at the centre, such as urbanisation, with branches for housing, transport, environment and migration, and one or two cases with core data hanging off each branch. Flashcards work on the prompt-and-recall principle: the front carries the case name and a question such as what Bangladesh's flood management measures are, and the back carries the three-column essentials. Spaced repetition is the most effective way to fix cases in memory: split cards into familiar and unfamiliar piles, review only the unfamiliar pile daily, and run through all cards at the weekend. Fifteen minutes a day for the two weeks before the exam builds a durable memory.
Exam Timing and 20-Mark Essay Strategy
Time allocation decides how much of your answer you complete. In an Edexcel A-Level Geography paper, a 20-mark question deserves roughly 22 to 24 minutes: the first two minutes for reading, circling command words and jotting a plan, sixteen to eighteen minutes for the main body, and a final two minutes to check. The plan need not be long: three to five lines, with one topic word, one case name and one core figure per paragraph. Organise the essay as a one-sentence introduction, four or five body paragraphs, and a short conclusion. Keep each paragraph tight rather than rushing to finish, because the evaluative judgement in the conclusion is often exactly what separates an A* from an A.
Anatomy of a Top-Band Model Answer
Take the question of evaluating the role of government and NGOs in disaster recovery as a worked example. The introduction states the position directly: government plays the larger role, but NGOs are irreplaceable at community level. Four body paragraphs follow. The first uses the Haiti earthquake to describe government-led search, rescue and infrastructure reconstruction. The second uses the same case for NGOs providing medical care and micro-credit, filling the gaps the state left behind. The third brings in New Zealand as a contrast, showing that government capacity determines recovery speed. The fourth pivots to the argument that neither actor is sufficient alone and cooperation is decisive. The conclusion returns to the command word evaluate and delivers a weighed judgement. Every point is supported by a case, and no paragraph is empty theory.
