Transport in Animals
Why Do Multicellular Animals Need a Transport System?
Single-celled organisms such as amoeba exchange substances directly with their surroundings because their small size gives a large surface area to volume ratio and a short diffusion distance. As animals grow larger, this ratio falls sharply, and diffusion alone can no longer supply oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the body. This is why multicellular animals need a transport system: blood circulates through vessels, carrying oxygen, glucose and hormones to tissues while removing carbon dioxide and metabolic waste. The efficiency of the system depends on the coordination of a pump, a set of tubes and a carrier fluid. Exam questions often ask you to explain the link between surface area to volume ratio and the need for a transport system, so memorise this chain of reasoning.
Open and Closed Circulatory Systems
Arthropods such as insects have an open circulatory system in which blood, called haemolymph, is not confined to vessels but bathes the organs directly, flowing slowly at low pressure. This suits small animals with low metabolic rates. Earthworms, fish, birds and mammals have a closed circulatory system, in which blood stays inside vessels and exchanges materials with tissue fluid through capillary walls. Closed systems pump blood faster and at higher pressure, supporting the high metabolic demands of active animals. Comparison questions are common in exams: answer from four angles, the location of the blood, its speed, its pressure, and a named example for each type.
Single and Double Circulation
Fish have a single circulation: blood leaves the heart, passes through the gills where gas exchange occurs, travels around the body and returns to the heart, passing through the heart only once per circuit. Mammals and birds have a double circulation, in which blood travels from the heart to the lungs in the pulmonary circuit and around the body in the systemic circuit, passing through the heart twice for every complete loop. The advantage of double circulation is that oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are kept separate, so the systemic circuit can be maintained at higher pressure, speeding up the delivery of oxygen and nutrients. Both Edexcel and CIE often test this with diagrams, so practise drawing the route and labelling both the direction of flow and the oxygen content of the blood.
Heart Structure and the Four Chambers
The mammalian heart has four chambers: the left and right atria and the left and right ventricles. Atrial walls are thin because they only receive returning blood, while ventricular walls are thicker because they pump blood out of the heart. The left ventricle has the thickest wall of all, since it must generate the highest pressure to push blood all the way around the body; the right ventricle only pumps blood to the lungs. Atrioventricular valves, the bicuspid and tricuspid valves, lie between the atria and ventricles, and semilunar valves sit at the base of the aorta and pulmonary artery, preventing backflow. The apex points down and to the left, and the right side of the heart carries deoxygenated blood while the left side carries oxygenated blood, a detail that often appears in multiple-choice questions.
The Cardiac Cycle: How the Heart Pumps Blood
The cardiac cycle has three stages. During atrial systole the atria contract and push blood into the ventricles. During ventricular systole ventricular pressure rises, the atrioventricular valves snap shut and the semilunar valves open, forcing blood into the arteries. During diastole both atria and ventricles relax and blood refills the heart from the veins. The valves open and close purely because of pressure differences, which guarantees one-way flow. Each beat is initiated by electrical signals from the sinoatrial node, the pacemaker, which spread through the atrioventricular node and Purkinje fibres so that the ventricles contract from the apex upwards, squeezing blood into the arteries. Advanced questions often ask you to explain why the left ventricle has the thickest wall and the highest pressure.
Arteries, Veins and Capillaries
Arteries have thick, elastic walls containing smooth muscle and elastic fibres, with small lumens; they carry blood away from the heart at high pressure. Veins have thinner, less elastic walls and large lumens, and they contain valves that prevent backflow under the low pressure of returning blood. Capillary walls are only one endothelial cell thick, so the distance for diffusion is extremely short, making them the site where oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose and waste products are exchanged between the blood and body cells. Comparing the three vessels is a guaranteed exam topic: you should be able to link each structural feature to its function, such as elastic fibres and pulse pressure in arteries, valves and the skeletal muscle pump in veins, and the thin capillary wall with its short diffusion distance.
Components of Blood and Their Functions
Blood is made up of plasma and blood cells. Plasma is a pale yellow liquid, about ninety percent water, which transports blood cells, nutrients, hormones, urea and carbon dioxide. Red blood cells have no nucleus and are biconcave discs packed with haemoglobin, giving a large surface area for carrying oxygen. White blood cells contain a nucleus and can change shape to engulf pathogens and produce antibodies, forming the core of the immune system. Platelets are fragments of cells without a nucleus; when a blood vessel is damaged they clump together and release clotting factors that help blood to coagulate. Exams often show microscope images or functional descriptions and ask you to identify the component, so learn the shape and function of each one thoroughly.
Haemoglobin and Oxygen Transport
Haemoglobin is an iron-containing protein inside red blood cells that combines reversibly with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin. In the lungs, where oxygen concentration is high, haemoglobin binds oxygen; in the tissues, where oxygen concentration is low, it releases it. The reaction can be written as haemoglobin plus oxygen forming oxyhaemoglobin, and each haemoglobin molecule can carry up to four oxygen molecules, greatly increasing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. At A-Level you also need the oxygen dissociation curve: its S shape shows cooperative binding, which allows haemoglobin to release large amounts of oxygen efficiently in the tissues. During vigorous exercise, tissues produce more carbon dioxide, lowering pH and prompting haemoglobin to release more oxygen, an effect named after the physiologist Bohr.
Tissue Fluid and the Lymphatic System
At the arterial end of a capillary, blood pressure is higher than the plasma osmotic pressure, so water and small solutes are forced out of the capillary to form tissue fluid, which bathes the cells, delivering oxygen and nutrients and collecting carbon dioxide and waste. At the venous end, blood pressure has fallen and most of the tissue fluid returns to the blood. About ten percent of it enters blind-ended lymphatic capillaries to become lymph, which eventually returns to the bloodstream through the thoracic duct into the subclavian vein. The lymphatic system also transports fats and contributes to immune defence. If lymph drainage is blocked, fluid accumulates in the tissues, causing oedema. You should be able to explain tissue fluid formation using the balance between blood pressure and osmotic pressure, a favourite A-Level question that often comes with experimental data.
Coronary Heart Disease and Cardiovascular Health
Coronary heart disease is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases. The heart muscle receives its own blood supply from the coronary arteries. When fatty and cholesterol deposits build up on the inner walls of these arteries, forming plaques that narrow or block the lumen, the cardiac muscle is starved of oxygen and nutrients, causing angina; a complete blockage leads to myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. Risk factors include a high-fat diet, smoking, lack of exercise, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and genetic predisposition. Prevention relies on a balanced diet, regular exercise, stopping smoking and controlling body weight. Exam questions often link risk factors to lifestyle choices, asking you to explain how plaques form and why a healthy lifestyle lowers the risk of disease.
