WJEC A-Level
Physiology is a core component of the WJEC A-Level Biology specification, assessed across Units 2 and 3 with a high mark weighting and strong conceptual continuity. This article maps the essential topics across the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, urinary, nervous and muscular systems, giving you a complete revision framework.
一、WJEC生理学考点地图:哪些单元考什么 | WJEC Physiology Topic Map: What Each Unit Covers
Physiology appears in two WJEC units. Unit 2 covers the circulatory system (cardiac cycle, blood pressure, atherosclerosis), the respiratory system (gas exchange) and the digestive system (enzymes and absorption). Unit 3 covers homeostasis and osmoregulation (kidney, ADH), the nervous system (action potentials, synaptic transmission) and skeletal muscle contraction. Short-answer questions on both papers follow the theme of how structure is adapted to function, and examiners reward precise use of biological terminology.
Digestive System: Enzymes and Absorption Mechanisms
WJEC requires full understanding of how carbohydrates, proteins and lipids are digested. Starch is hydrolysed by amylase in saliva and pancreatic juice to maltose, which maltase at the brush border converts to glucose. Proteins are progressively hydrolysed by pepsin and trypsin to polypeptides, then to amino acids by peptidases. Lipids are emulsified by bile and broken down by lipase into fatty acids and glycerol. Villi, microvilli, capillary networks and lacteals are frequently examined, and answers must link increased surface area to the specific absorption route of each nutrient.
Respiratory System: Surface Adaptations for Gas Exchange
Key gas exchange points are the structural features of alveoli: thin walls of squamous epithelium shorten diffusion distance, the huge total surface area maximises exchange, dense capillary networks maintain concentration gradients, and surfactant lowers surface tension to prevent collapse. WJEC also examines ventilation-perfusion matching, such as increased capillary recruitment in alveoli during exercise. Questions on the breathing mechanism require the correct sequence of diaphragm and external intercostal contraction, followed by changes in thoracic volume and pressure, a six-mark answer template that appears every year.
The Cardiac Cycle: Phases of the Heartbeat
Cardiac cycle questions require the correct sequence of three phases: atrial systole pushes blood into the ventricles, ventricular systole begins with isovolumetric contraction that rapidly raises pressure, the semilunar valves open once ventricular pressure exceeds aortic pressure, and finally ventricular diastole with open atrioventricular valves allows filling. WJEC papers frequently include ECG traces or pressure curves, asking you to link each wave to valve movements. The pacemaker is the sinoatrial node; the signal is delayed at the atrioventricular node and travels down the bundle of His, a delay that ensures atrial contraction precedes ventricular contraction.
Blood Pressure and the Pathology of Atherosclerosis
Blood pressure depends on cardiac output and total peripheral resistance, and elastic recoil of arterial walls keeps blood flowing during diastole. The pathological sequence of atherosclerosis is a classic WJEC essay question: damage to the endothelium allows monocytes to enter the intima, where they take up oxidised LDL to become foam cells; lipid and fibrous tissue accumulate to form an atheroma, narrowing the lumen and reducing elasticity, eventually leading to coronary heart disease or stroke. Answers should trace the full chain from endothelial damage through lipid deposition and plaque formation to thrombus risk, and separate controllable from uncontrollable risk factors.
Kidney Ultrafiltration and Selective Reabsorption
Ultrafiltration occurs at the glomerulus, driven by capillary hydrostatic pressure, and the three-layer filtration membrane (fenestrated endothelium, basement membrane, podocyte slit pores) acts as a molecular sieve that excludes blood cells and large proteins. In the proximal convoluted tubule, all glucose and most amino acids and water are selectively reabsorbed by active transport and passive diffusion. The countercurrent multiplier of the loop of Henle establishes the medullary osmotic gradient, and the distal tubule and collecting duct make final adjustments under hormonal control. WJEC often asks why a substance does or does not appear in urine, so answers must consider both molecular size and carrier proteins.
Osmoregulation and Antidiuretic Hormone
Osmoregulation is a compulsory topic in Unit 3. Osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus monitor plasma solute concentration. When water intake is low, plasma osmotic pressure rises, the hypothalamus synthesises more antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and the posterior pituitary releases it, causing more aquaporins to be inserted into the collecting duct wall. Water reabsorption increases, urine becomes concentrated and osmotic pressure falls. The reverse process follows the same logic. WJEC essays combine the receptor-coordinator-effector sequence with negative feedback, and often ask why alcohol and caffeine inhibit ADH secretion and increase urine output.
Action Potential Generation and Conduction
Resting potential is about -70 mV, set by the ion gradients maintained by the sodium-potassium pump and by potassium efflux. When a threshold stimulus arrives, voltage-gated sodium channels open and rapid sodium influx depolarises the membrane to about +40 mV; sodium channels then inactivate, potassium channels open, and potassium efflux repolarises the membrane, after which the pump slowly restores ion distribution, creating a refractory period. Action potentials travel along axons in an all-or-nothing manner, and myelinated fibres conduct saltatory impulses between nodes of Ranvier much faster. WJEC graph questions often ask you to draw or label the membrane potential trace, so include all four stages: resting, depolarisation, repolarisation and hyperpolarisation.
Synaptic Transmission and Neurotransmitters
Synaptic transmission must be described in sequence: an action potential arrives at the presynaptic membrane, voltage-gated calcium channels open, calcium influx causes synaptic vesicles to fuse with the membrane and release neurotransmitter by exocytosis; the transmitter diffuses across the cleft and binds to specific receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, opening ion channels to produce an excitatory (sodium influx) or inhibitory (chloride influx) postsynaptic potential. Enzymatic breakdown or reuptake removes the transmitter rapidly, ensuring one-way transmission. WJEC often tests drug mechanisms, such as organophosphate pesticides inhibiting acetylcholinesterase so that acetylcholine persists and causes muscle spasm; the answer framework is drug-enzyme-transmitter-effect.
Sliding Filament Model of Muscle Contraction
The sliding filament model is a high-frequency WJEC essay. Key points: an impulse reaches the fibre at the motor end plate, calcium ions are released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum and bind troponin, causing tropomyosin to shift and expose binding sites on actin; myosin heads hydrolyse ATP, bind to actin and perform a power stroke that slides thin filaments toward the centre of the sarcomere, then a new ATP molecule binds to detach the cross-bridge. Repeated cross-bridge cycles shorten the sarcomere, narrowing the H zone and I band while the A band width stays constant, the key evidence for interpreting microscope images. Finish by explaining that calcium is pumped back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum to allow relaxation.
High-Frequency Pitfalls and Revision Strategy
Examiner reports show three recurring weaknesses in physiology answers: conceptual confusion, such as mixing up hormones with neurotransmitters or isovolumetric contraction with ejection; reversed sequences, such as writing the stages of an action potential or valve movements in the wrong order; and imprecise terminology, such as writing concentration instead of osmotic pressure or omitting the all-or-nothing principle. Revision advice: draw a flow diagram for each system, linking key events with arrows and noting the driving mechanism; redo every graph-based question from past WJEC papers to sharpen interpretation and labelling skills; and test your essay templates under timed conditions so a six-mark answer can be produced completely within five minutes.
