WJEC A-Level
What is Biodiversity?
Biodiversity describes the variety of life in a particular habitat or ecosystem, and it is a central idea in the WJEC A-Level Biology ecology unit studied at A2. The specification asks you to distinguish three levels: species diversity, which considers both the number of species in a community and how evenly individuals are distributed between them; genetic diversity, which measures the total range of alleles within a species and determines its ability to survive environmental change; and ecosystem diversity, which covers the variety of habitats, communities and ecological processes across a landscape. A common exam task is to read a statement about a habitat and decide which level of biodiversity it describes, so learning the definitions precisely is essential.
Two Ways to Measure Species Diversity
The WJEC specification requires you to know two ways of measuring species diversity. Species richness is simply the number of different species present in a community, ignoring how many individuals each species has, so two communities with the same species count but very different population sizes score identically on this measure. Species evenness, by contrast, looks at how evenly individuals are distributed among the species. A useful exam insight is that a community with few species can still be highly diverse if its individuals are spread evenly, while a community dominated by one species shows low diversity even with a moderate species count. Sampling techniques matter too: quadrats are used for plants and slow-moving organisms, while transects reveal how species change along an environmental gradient.
Simpson's Index of Diversity Worked Example
Simpson's Index of Diversity is the calculation most frequently tested in WJEC papers, and the formula is D = 1 - Σ(n/N)², where n is the number of individuals of one species, N is the total number of individuals of all species, and Σ means summing across all species. The calculation has just three steps: first record each species count and find the total N; second square each (n/N) fraction and add the results; third subtract that sum from 1. For example, a quadrat containing 10 individuals of species A, 6 of species B and 4 of species C gives N = 20, so D = 1 - [(10/20)² + (6/20)² + (4/20)²] = 1 - (0.25 + 0.09 + 0.04) = 0.62. The index ranges from 0 to 1, with values closer to 1 indicating higher diversity. WJEC mark schemes reward showing the full substitution and usually expect the final answer to two decimal places, so always write out the complete working.
Genetic Diversity and the Gene Pool
Genetic diversity is stored in the gene pool, which is the complete set of all alleles carried by every individual in a population. A larger gene pool gives a population greater ability to cope with environmental change, because natural selection has a wider range of genetic material to act upon. Two processes that sharply reduce genetic diversity must be learned in detail. A genetic bottleneck occurs when a disaster or overhunting crashes the population to a tiny size, so the few survivors pass on only a limited set of alleles. The founder effect happens when a small number of individuals colonise a new area and establish a population carrying only a fraction of the original allele variety. Both concepts are often examined through case studies, such as cheetahs, whose historical population collapse left them with very low genetic diversity and increased vulnerability to disease and environmental shifts.
Why Does Biodiversity Matter?
The WJEC course asks you to appreciate the value of biodiversity from several angles. Ecologically, diverse communities are more stable: food webs are more complex, and energy flow and nutrient cycles are less easily disrupted. Economically, many crops, medicines and industrial materials come from wild species, for example quinine from cinchona bark and penicillin from Penicillium mould, so a species driven to extinction may take a potential future treatment with it. Agriculturally, genetic diversity in crop plants underpins breeding for disease resistance; a single variety planted over huge areas is catastrophically vulnerable when a new pathogen arrives. There are also aesthetic and ethical arguments, since biodiverse landscapes support tourism and science education. A useful exam technique is to organise answers into ecological, economic, agricultural and ethical points so that every mark point on the mark scheme is covered.
How Agriculture Threatens Biodiversity
Modern agriculture is the leading human cause of biodiversity decline, and WJEC expects you to explain at least three or four specific mechanisms. Monoculture replaces diverse vegetation with vast areas of a single crop, directly destroying habitat for many native species. Herbicides and pesticides kill more than their targets: they accumulate along food chains, harming pollinating insects and the natural predators of crop pests. Hedgerow removal merges fields into larger plots and severs the linear habitats that small mammals and birds use for movement and nesting. Drainage and heavy fertiliser use alter soil chemistry so that slow-growing wild plants are outcompeted by fast-growing weeds. When answering, distinguish direct impacts such as habitat destruction from indirect effects such as food chain disruption, because this distinction carries specific marks in WJEC mark schemes.
In Situ and Ex Situ Conservation
Conservation strategies fall into two broad categories that WJEC asks you to compare with named examples. In situ conservation protects species within their original habitats, including national parks, nature reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). Its great strength is that whole ecosystems and the interactions between species are preserved together, but it is limited by funding and land availability, and it cannot save a species whose wild population has fallen to just a handful of individuals. Ex situ conservation works outside the natural habitat, using botanic gardens, zoos, seed banks and captive breeding programmes. These allow intensive care and controlled breeding research, yet they cannot maintain the species' original ecological relationships, and prolonged captivity can further erode genetic diversity. A typical exam question describes an endangered species and asks you to recommend the most suitable strategy with justification, so practise linking habitat condition and population size to the choice of method.
八、WJEC考试常见题型与评分点 | WJEC Exam Question Types and Mark Points
In the WJEC A2 unit papers, biodiversity content usually appears in three forms. Definition questions simply ask you to write down what species richness or genetic diversity means, worth one to two marks, and they demand precise terminology rather than vague description. Calculation questions supply species count data and ask for Simpson's Index together with an interpretation of the value, worth three to four marks, with marks typically split between substitution, working and the concluding explanation. Contextual analysis questions present survey data from a wetland or farmland site, asking you to explain why diversity changed and to recommend conservation measures; these carry the most marks, often six to eight, and reward answers that use the agricultural mechanisms and both conservation categories covered above. Comparison questions, worth around four marks, ask you to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of in situ versus ex situ methods.
Common Misconceptions and Pitfalls
Past candidate scripts reveal four recurring sources of lost marks in this topic. The first is confusing species richness with diversity: richness counts species only, whereas diversity also considers how evenly individuals are distributed, so answers that substitute richness for Simpson's Index lose marks. The second is misremembering the formula's meaning: D closer to 1 means higher diversity, and some students forget to calculate and sum the (n/N)² term for every species. The third is mixing up the genetic bottleneck and the founder effect: both reduce genetic diversity, but a bottleneck is a large population suddenly crashing, while the founder effect is a new population established by very few individuals. The fourth is assigning conservation measures to the wrong category, such as calling a zoo in situ or a national park ex situ. A strong revision habit is to record each error type with a real past-paper question in a mistake book and review it daily in the final week.
A Two-Week Revision Plan
Because this topic has a compact concept set and a fixed calculation, two weeks is enough to secure the easy marks. Spend the first three days on concept mapping: draw one mind map linking the three levels of diversity, the two measurement methods and the two genetic effects, then recite it from memory each morning and evening. Days four to seven focus on calculations and past papers: complete two Simpson's Index questions daily, then answer one six-to-eight-mark contextual question in full and mark it against the published mark scheme. The first half of week two is for mistake review: sort errors into definition, calculation and comparison categories and hunt for repeated patterns. The second half is for timed full papers: sit two complete WJEC past papers under exam conditions, paying special attention to substitution detail in calculations and precise terminology in contextual answers. On the final day, revise only the mistake book and formula card, and avoid attempting new questions.
