What Is Enthalpy Change?
Enthalpy change (ΔH) is the heat energy transferred during a chemical reaction at constant pressure, measured in kJ mol⁻¹. It describes the energy exchange between the system and its surroundings: when the system releases heat, ΔH is negative and the reaction is exothermic; when the system absorbs heat, ΔH is positive and the reaction is endothermic. The value of ΔH depends only on the states of the reactants and products, including their physical state, temperature and pressure, not on the intermediate steps of the reaction. This route-independence is the foundation of Hess's law, and it is tested every year in the OCR energetics questions.
Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions
Typical exothermic reactions include combustion, acid-base neutralisation and the reaction of metals with acids; the system releases heat to the surroundings, the temperature of the surroundings rises, and ΔH is negative. Typical endothermic reactions include thermal decomposition such as the decomposition of calcium carbonate, and dissolving ammonium salts in water; the system absorbs heat, the temperature falls, and ΔH is positive. You can judge the sign of ΔH by comparing bond energies: if the energy released when new bonds form in the products exceeds the energy absorbed when bonds in the reactants break, the reaction is exothermic. In an energy profile diagram, the activation energy is the height of the hump, and ΔH is the vertical difference between the products and the reactants; the products sit below the reactants for exothermic reactions and above them for endothermic reactions.
Standard Enthalpy Changes and Standard Conditions
To compare enthalpy changes fairly, chemists define a set of standard conditions: a temperature of 298 K (25 °C), a pressure of 100 kPa, solutions at a concentration of 1 mol dm⁻³, and all substances in their standard states, meaning the most stable form of the substance under those conditions. An enthalpy change measured under these conditions is called a standard enthalpy change and is written with the plimsoll symbol, ΔH⦵. When you write a definition in the exam, you must spell out all three conditions, because OCR mark schemes frequently award a separate mark for stating the temperature and pressure explicitly rather than writing the vague phrase "standard conditions".
Standard Enthalpy of Formation
The standard enthalpy of formation (ΔfH⦵) is the enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states under standard conditions. For example, the complete combustion of carbon to form carbon dioxide has ΔfH⦵ = −393.5 kJ mol⁻¹. Two details matter in definitions. First, the phrase "one mole of compound" must appear, because formation enthalpies are molar quantities. Second, the standard enthalpy of formation of an element in its standard state is defined as zero; this baseline is used constantly when you build Hess cycles, and examiners deliberately test whether you remember to subtract the zero terms correctly.
Standard Enthalpy of Combustion
The standard enthalpy of combustion (ΔcH⦵) is the enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is burned completely in excess oxygen under standard conditions. For example, the complete combustion of methane has ΔcH⦵ ≈ −890 kJ mol⁻¹. Combustion enthalpies matter because they are easy to measure experimentally in a calorimeter for organic compounds, which makes the combustion cycle the preferred tool in Hess's law calculations involving organic reactions. When writing the definition, the phrases "one mole of substance" and "complete combustion" are essential, and the products must be the most stable oxides, carbon dioxide and water. The mass of fuel burned is found by weighing the spirit burner before and after the experiment.
Calorimetry: Measuring Enthalpy Changes
Two calorimeter setups appear in OCR practical work. For reactions in solution, such as neutralisation, a polystyrene cup containing the solution acts as an insulator, a thermometer records the temperature, and the second reactant is added while you stir. For combustion reactions, a spirit burner containing a liquid fuel heats a known mass of water inside a copper calorimeter; the mass of fuel consumed is the difference between the burner's mass before and after the experiment. In both setups you record the temperature every 30 seconds, plot temperature against time, and extrapolate the curve back to the moment of mixing to correct for heat lost to the surroundings. This correction matters because heat loss is the largest source of systematic error in calorimetry.
七、q=mcΔT计算与误差来源 | Calculations Using q = mcΔT and Sources of Error
The central calculation is q = mcΔT, where q is the heat absorbed or released in joules, m is the mass of the water or solution in grams, c is the specific heat capacity (4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹ for water) and ΔT is the temperature change in kelvin. Dividing q by the number of moles n of the limiting reactant gives ΔH = q/n in kJ mol⁻¹, after converting joules to kilojoules. Sources of error include heat loss to the surroundings, incomplete combustion of the fuel, and the assumption that the density and specific heat capacity of the solution are the same as those of pure water. All of these errors make experimental enthalpy values appear less exothermic, so the measured magnitude of ΔH is smaller than the data-book value. OCR examiners expect you to state this direction of error explicitly.
八、Hess定律的原理 | The Principle of Hess's Law
Hess's law states that the total enthalpy change of a reaction is independent of the route taken, depending only on the initial and final states of the system. This follows because enthalpy is a state function: its value is fixed by the state of the system, not by the history of how that state was reached. The law lets us calculate enthalpy changes for reactions that are difficult to measure directly, such as the incomplete combustion of carbon to carbon monoxide, by breaking the reaction into steps with known enthalpy changes and adding them together. In practice you draw an enthalpy cycle as a triangle: one route is the direct reaction, and the other route goes through an intermediate, usually the elements or the combustion products. Following the arrows and adding or subtracting each term correctly is the core skill.
九、Hess定律的计算应用 | Applying Hess's Law in Calculations
Two cycle types dominate OCR questions. In the formation cycle, the reaction is routed through the elements, giving ΔH = ΣΔfH⦵(products) − ΣΔfH⦵(reactants). In the combustion cycle, the reactants and products are both routed through their complete combustion products, giving ΔH = ΣΔcH⦵(reactants) − ΣΔcH⦵(products). Worked example: for the reaction 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O, using the formation enthalpy of water, ΔfH⦵ = −285.8 kJ mol⁻¹, gives ΔH = 2 × (−285.8) − 0 = −571.6 kJ mol⁻¹. The elements hydrogen and oxygen have zero formation enthalpies, which is why they contribute nothing to the sum. Always draw the cycle with clear arrows and check the sign of every term twice, because sign errors are the single most common reason students lose marks in Hess's law questions.
Mean Bond Enthalpy Calculations
The mean bond enthalpy is the average energy required to break one mole of a particular covalent bond in gaseous molecules; for example, the H-H bond enthalpy is about 436 kJ mol⁻¹. To estimate the enthalpy change of a reaction, sum the bond enthalpies of all bonds broken in the reactants and subtract the sum of the bond enthalpies of all bonds formed in the products: ΔH ≈ Σ(bonds broken) − Σ(bonds formed). The result is only an estimate for two reasons: bond enthalpies are averaged over many different compounds rather than being exact for one molecule, and the calculation assumes that all substances are in the gaseous state. When OCR asks why the calculated value differs from the experimental value, the expected answer is that mean bond enthalpies are average values taken from a range of molecules, not exact values for the specific compounds in the reaction.
Enthalpy of Neutralisation and Solution
The enthalpy of neutralisation (ΔneutH) is the enthalpy change when one mole of water is formed from an acid and a base under standard conditions. For strong acids and strong bases such as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, ΔneutH is approximately −57 kJ mol⁻¹, because the reaction is always the same: H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l). The enthalpy of solution (ΔsolH) is the enthalpy change when one mole of solute dissolves in enough solvent that further dilution causes no measurable temperature change. It can be positive or negative: dissolving ammonium chloride is endothermic, while dissolving sodium hydroxide is exothermic. In the experiment you measure the temperature change of the solution, apply q = mcΔT, and divide by the number of moles of water formed, which is fixed by the limiting reagent.
十二、Born-Haber循环与晶格焓 | Born-Haber Cycles and Lattice Enthalpy
Lattice enthalpy (ΔlattH) is the enthalpy change when one mole of an ionic compound is formed from its gaseous ions, and this process always releases energy, so lattice enthalpy is exothermic. The Born-Haber cycle, covered in Year 2 of OCR Chemistry A (Module 5), links the lattice enthalpy to the standard enthalpy of formation through a series of steps: atomisation of the elements, ionisation energies, electron affinities and bond enthalpies. You work around the cycle applying the same arrow rule as in Hess's law, adding terms in one direction and subtracting them in the other. The experimental lattice enthalpy obtained from the Born-Haber cycle can be compared with the theoretical value calculated from ionic radii and charges; the difference between the two is cited as evidence for covalent character in ionic bonding, and examiners often ask you to explain this comparison.
Common mistakes in OCR energetics questions include writing units as J instead of kJ mol⁻¹, omitting key phrases such as "standard conditions", "one mole" or "complete combustion" from definitions, drawing the arrows in Hess cycles in the wrong direction so the signs come out inverted, and applying bond enthalpy calculations to reactions that involve liquids or solids, even though bond enthalpies only apply to gases. For temperature changes, the numerical value is identical in kelvin and degrees Celsius, but convert to kelvin when you quote absolute temperatures. A reliable answer technique is to underline the key definition phrases first, draw the enthalpy cycle with labelled arrows, then set out the calculation in numbered steps with units on every line; this way the examiner can award method marks even if the final numerical answer is wrong.
