CIE AS Statistics
Exam Structure and Paper Format
CIE AS Statistics is examined through Paper 5, Probability and Statistics 1, of the Cambridge International AS Mathematics 9709 syllabus. The paper lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, carries 50 marks, and contributes one third of the total AS Mathematics mark. A List of Formulae is provided in the examination, covering variance, standard deviation, permutations and combinations, and the binomial distribution, so candidates are not required to memorise every formula but must understand what each symbol means and when each formula applies. The paper normally consists of six or seven structured questions, each with several parts of increasing difficulty. Compared with Pure Mathematics, statistics questions involve much more reading, and many lost marks come from misinterpreting the context rather than from calculation errors. A sensible first step, therefore, is to become familiar with the paper structure, note how often each topic appears, and plan revision time accordingly.
Representing Data with Diagrams
Representation of data is the first major topic in Paper 5, with common questions on stem-and-leaf diagrams, box-and-whisker plots and histograms. When drawing a stem-and-leaf diagram you must order the data, include a key, and record every value. When reading one, you should be able to recover the raw data and then find the median and quartiles. A histogram differs from a bar chart: in a bar chart the height represents frequency, while in a histogram the area represents frequency, and the frequency density equals the frequency divided by the class width. A typical question asks you to reconstruct a frequency table from a histogram, which means reading off frequency densities and multiplying by the class width. A box-and-whisker plot displays the five key values: minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile and maximum. Questions often ask you to draw one from raw data or to comment on the shape and spread of the distribution from a given plot.
Cumulative Frequency Graphs and Quartiles
The cumulative frequency graph is the standard tool for estimating quartiles and percentiles. To draw one, plot the cumulative frequency against the upper class boundary of each interval, then join the points with a smooth curve or straight line segments. From the graph you can read the lower quartile Q1, the median Q2 and the upper quartile Q3, and hence calculate the interquartile range. You should also be able to locate the median directly from a cumulative frequency table by finding the position of the n/2 th value and identifying the interval that contains it. Common traps include confusing strict and non-strict inequalities when reading boundaries, and plotting the mid-point of a class instead of its upper boundary. If you remember that a cumulative frequency graph simply counts how many values lie below each boundary, many apparently complicated questions become straightforward.
Measures of Central Tendency
Measures of central tendency include the mean, the median and the mode. For raw data the mean is the sum of the values divided by the number of values; for grouped data you multiply each mid-point by its frequency, add the products and divide by the total frequency. Weighted means appear frequently in past papers, for example when finding an overall average from component marks with different weights. The median is the middle value when the data are ordered; with an even number of values you take the mean of the two middle ones, and for grouped data you estimate it from a cumulative frequency table or graph. The mode is the most common value, and the modal class is the class with the highest frequency. A particularly important skill is coding: if every value is reduced by a constant a and then divided by a constant b, the mean of the coded data equals the original mean minus a, all divided by b. This transformation appears regularly in examination questions.
Measures of Variation
Measures of variation include the range, the interquartile range, and the variance and standard deviation. The variance is defined as the mean of the squared deviations from the mean, and the standard deviation is its square root. Although the formula is given in the List of Formulae, you must be able to switch between the defining formula and the computational form, which expresses variance as the mean of the squares minus the square of the mean; the computational form is easier to evaluate by summing squares on a calculator. For grouped data, use the mid-points and frequencies in the same way. A key property is that adding a constant a to every value leaves the variance unchanged, while multiplying every value by b multiplies the variance by b squared and the standard deviation by b. This property is frequently tested together with coding, so it is worth mastering thoroughly.
Basic Rules of Probability
考试常考的是由已知概率反推未知量,例如已知 P(A)、P(B) 和 P(A∪B),求 P(A∩B)。
The probability section begins with two fundamental ideas: mutually exclusive events and independent events. Mutually exclusive events cannot occur at the same time, and the probability of their union is the sum of their individual probabilities; independent events do not affect each other, and the probability of their intersection is the product of their probabilities. A common question type asks you to work backwards from known probabilities, for example finding P(A and B) when P(A), P(B) and P(A or B) are given. You should also be comfortable with complementary events: P(A') equals 1 minus P(A), and it is often easier to calculate the probability of the complement than the probability of the event itself. Typical contexts in past papers include selecting balls, rolling dice, drawing cards and analysing examination score distributions. The key is to identify the relationship between events correctly before choosing a formula.
Conditional Probability and Tree Diagrams
条件概率 P(A|B) 表示在事件 B 已经发生的条件下事件 A 发生的概率,计算公式是 P(A∩B) 除以 P(B)。
Conditional probability P(A given B) measures the probability of A occurring given that B has already occurred, and is calculated as P(A and B) divided by P(B). Tree diagrams are the standard tool for multi-stage experiments: multiply the probabilities along a path to find the probability of that outcome, and add the probabilities of different paths to find the probability of a class of outcomes. Common conditional probability contexts in past papers include sampling without replacement and stratified sampling. Without replacement, the probabilities at each stage change according to the previous draw, which is the most common source of error. When tackling such questions, draw the full tree diagram first, label every conditional probability, and then select the relevant paths. Also pay attention to key phrases: expressions such as "given that" usually signal that the conditional probability formula is needed.
Permutations and Combinations
A permutation is an arrangement in which order matters, while a combination is a selection in which order does not. The number of ways to choose and arrange r objects from n distinct objects is nPr, and the number of ways to choose r objects is nCr; both formulae are provided in the List of Formulae, so the real challenge is deciding whether the context is ordered or not. A useful test is to ask whether swapping two selected objects gives a different result: if it does, use permutations; if not, use combinations. Common contexts include arranging seats, arranging letters of a word, choosing committees from a group, and allocating tasks. Arrangements with identical items, and arrangements where certain people must sit together or apart, are also frequent. Combination questions often combine with probability, for example finding the probability of drawing a particular colour combination from a bag, where you divide the number of favourable selections by the total number of selections.
The Binomial Distribution
真题常考给定 X ~ B(n, p) 后计算 P(X = k) 或 P(X ≥ k),后者通常转化为 1 减 P(X ≤ k-1)。
The binomial distribution models the number of successes in n independent repeated trials, where the probability of success on each trial is p. If the random variable X follows a binomial distribution with parameters n and p, written X ~ B(n, p), then the probability of exactly r successes is nCr times p to the power r times (1-p) to the power (n-r). Three conditions must hold: the number of trials n is fixed, the trials are independent, and the success probability p is constant. Past papers often ask for P(X = k) or P(X at least k) given X ~ B(n, p); the latter is usually evaluated as 1 minus P(X at most k-1). The binomial functions on a scientific calculator give cumulative probabilities quickly, but the examination requires the key formula and the working to be shown, so practise combining written steps with calculator checks. Deciding whether a situation is genuinely binomial is one of the most valuable skills in this topic.
Common Mistakes and Question Traps
Lost marks in statistics papers usually cluster into a few categories. First, confusing the population with the sample: check whether a given statistic is computed over the whole population or over a sample, and follow the formula booklet, which at CIE AS level uses the population variance with denominator n. Second, using the wrong mid-point or forgetting the frequency weights when working with grouped data. Third, mixing up "at least", "at most" and "exactly" in probability questions, which leads to the wrong cumulative interval. Fourth, applying a permutation or combination formula without first deciding whether order matters. Fifth, treating histograms like bar charts and using height instead of area. Sixth, using ordinary probability where conditional probability is required, especially when the phrase "without replacement" appears. A useful habit is to file every mistake from mock examinations into these categories and review them shortly before the real examination; this alone can prevent a surprising number of repeated errors.
Past Paper Practice and Time Management
Past paper practice is the core of statistics revision. A sensible schedule has three rounds: first, work through the last five years of Paper 5 questions organised by topic, checking the mark scheme after every question to see where method marks are awarded; second, complete whole papers under timed conditions, strictly within 1 hour 15 minutes, to simulate the real examination; third, redo the questions you repeatedly get wrong and build a one-page summary of formulae and common pitfalls. The mark schemes reward clear working: writing out the summation of x squared when computing variance, or stating the formula used in a probability question, earns method marks even when the final answer is wrong. Since statistics involves heavy computation, attempt the questions you are most confident about first, skip difficult parts, and return to them at the end. In the final week, complete one past paper each day to keep your skills sharp, and sleep well so that you enter the examination room refreshed.
