A-Level

What Is Social Influence? Three Types of Conformity

Social influence describes how other people or groups change an individual's attitudes and behaviour. Kelman proposed three levels of conformity. Compliance means going along with the group in public while privately disagreeing, usually to gain approval or avoid rejection. Identification occurs when someone conforms because they value membership of a group and want to resemble its members; the change lasts only while the relationship matters. Internalisation is the deepest level, where the individual genuinely accepts the group's beliefs, so public and private views change together and the shift is most permanent. Exam questions often ask candidates to compare these types along the public-private dimension and to say whether each changes attitudes or only outward behaviour.

Two Explanations of Conformity: ISI and NSI

Deutsch and Gerard identified two motives behind conformity. Informational social influence operates when a situation is ambiguous and people look to others because they believe the group knows better; it is a cognitive process that usually leads to internalisation. Normative social influence operates when people conform in order to be accepted and to avoid rejection; it is an emotional process that usually produces public compliance without private change. ISI is stronger on difficult or unclear tasks and when others are seen as experts, while NSI is stronger in public settings where standing out feels risky. Good answers link each motive to its underlying process and to the type of conformity it produces.

Asch's Line-Judging Studies

Asch's classic studies asked participants to judge line lengths while confederates deliberately gave wrong answers. Participants conformed to the incorrect majority on about a third of critical trials, and roughly a quarter never conformed at all. A control group made errors on fewer than one percent of trials, showing that the task was unambiguous. The findings demonstrate that normative pressure can produce public conformity even when the correct answer is obvious. Critics question the artificial setting, the unrepresentative sample of American male students, and the ethics of deceiving participants. Later variations identified group size, unanimity and task difficulty as the main variables that alter the level of conformity.

Situational Variables Affecting Conformity

Three variables reliably change the level of conformity. Group size matters up to a point: conformity increases as the majority grows to about three or four people, then plateaus, so a small majority can already exert strong pressure. Unanimity is more powerful: when a single confederate gives the correct answer, conformity drops to about five percent, because the dissenter provides social support and breaks the illusion of consensus. Task difficulty also raises conformity, because an ambiguous stimulus increases reliance on informational social influence. Exam answers should describe how each variable was manipulated, report the results, and explain the pattern using the appropriate theory, with Asch's own variations as supporting evidence.

Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment

Zimbardo assigned healthy student volunteers to the roles of guard and prisoner in a simulated prison built in the Stanford basement. The study had to be abandoned after six days instead of the planned two weeks because guards became brutal and prisoners showed severe distress. Participants internalised their roles so completely that behaviour appeared to be shaped far more by the situation than by personality, making the study powerful evidence for conformity to social roles. Critics point to the biased volunteer sample, Zimbardo's dual role as researcher and prison superintendent, and serious ethical concerns about psychological harm. Later replications using stricter procedures produced far milder results, which raises questions about the validity and generalisability of the original findings.

Milgram's Obedience Studies

Milgram's landmark study examined obedience to authority. Participants acting as teachers delivered electric shocks to a learner in another room whenever he answered incorrectly, increasing the voltage from 15 to 450 volts under orders from a researcher. Sixty-five percent of participants continued to the maximum shock, and every participant reached 300 volts, despite showing obvious signs of distress such as sweating, trembling and nervous laughter. Before the study, psychiatrists predicted that fewer than one percent would go all the way, which makes the real figure even more striking. The findings show that ordinary people will obey destructive authority when the situation demands it, but the deception and psychological stress generated fierce ethical criticism and helped shape modern research guidelines.

Situational Variables and Explanations of Obedience

Milgram varied the situation to identify which factors control obedience. When the learner was in the same room, obedience fell to 40 percent, and when teachers had to force the learner's hand onto the shock plate it dropped to 30 percent. Removing the experimenter cut obedience to around 20 percent, moving the study from Yale to a run-down office building lowered it to 47.5 percent, and replacing the lab coat with ordinary clothes reduced it further. Two explanations account for these patterns. The agentic state describes people seeing themselves as instruments of someone else's will, so responsibility is shifted to the authority figure and guilt is reduced. Legitimacy of authority explains why we obey figures society treats as entitled to give orders, such as scientists, teachers and police officers.

The Authoritarian Personality

Adorno proposed that obedience partly reflects personality. People with an authoritarian personality show extreme respect for authority, hostility towards minority groups, rigid thinking and a conventional outlook, usually measured with the F-scale. The theory claims this pattern develops from harsh, punitive parenting that leaves the child displacing hostility onto weaker targets. High scorers in Milgram's procedure were somewhat more obedient, which offers initial support. However, the explanation has serious weaknesses. It is a post-hoc account that cannot predict who will obey in advance, it depends on questionable psychoanalytic ideas with thin evidence, and it cannot explain why the majority of psychologically normal participants obeyed so readily. Most psychologists therefore favour situational explanations over dispositional ones.

Resistance to Social Influence: Social Support and Locus of Control

Some people resist social influence, and research identifies two main factors. Social support matters: in Asch's studies a single dissenter cut conformity to about five percent, and in Milgram's procedure obedience fell to ten percent when one confederate teacher refused to continue. An ally provides a model for defiance and reduces the psychological cost of standing alone. Locus of control also predicts resistance. Rotter distinguished internals, who believe outcomes follow from their own effort and decisions, from externals, who see events as controlled by outside forces. Internals are more self-confident, rely less on the opinions of others, and therefore conform and obey less. Exam questions often ask candidates to explain the mechanism linking an internal locus of control with greater independence, focusing on attribution of responsibility and self-efficacy.

Minority Influence and Social Change

Minority influence describes how a consistent minority can change the beliefs of the majority. Moscovici showed that a small group insisting on the same judgement led participants to give the minority answer on about eight percent of trials, because consistency makes the majority pause and think. Commitment adds impact: a minority that takes risks or makes sacrifices is seen as sincere, and deeper investment means stronger persuasion. Flexibility is also vital, because a rigid minority is dismissed while one that concedes on small points while holding its core position wins credibility. The mechanism is informational: the majority engages in deeper processing and genuinely internalises the new position rather than merely complying. This explains social change, where consistent minorities trigger a snowball effect as more people convert, gradually shifting social norms. Essays often apply this model to real movements such as environmentalism or civil rights.
